how Johnny Manziel almost became a Cowboy...

Mike in St. Louis : 7/28/2014 12:41 pm
“I want you to know that almost as I was handing in the card, it was that close to putting that Manziel card in. It was that close," Jones told the NFL Network on Sunday.

Still, just to add a final twist of the knife to Cowboys fans, Jones understood that he'll likely have buyers' remorse: "I know that he is going to be a success in the National Football League, and it was a hard decision. And it is one that I will probably have for the rest of my career think about."

which day is he full of shit on, May 9th or July 28th? On May 9th he said this.

Quote:
Alas the dream died when Dallas did the smart thing and took Zack Martin. If you listen to Jerrah it was always a pipe dream to begin with anyway. Jones said the Cowboys "didn't spend a lot of time" thinking about drafting Manziel.

"Romo, by contract as well as by commitment, is going to be certainly the quarterback for several years to come," Jones said. "Don't care who we drafted, that's the way it was going to be. So that's what was going through our minds. That's why we didn't spend a lot of time considering Manziel."

once rumor went around that Johnny Football might have been blowing lines in a bathroom, I can see Jerruh thinking "Hey, we won super bowls with guys who were cokeheads...maybe we should have drafted Manziel!"
8-8

Jerry. At best. Your defense is still horrific.
He comes across as that guy in your fantasy league

who passes on a hot sleeper pick then when two guys after him drafts him, lets the world know he regrets the decision. No downside - if he turns out right, he i guess seems smarter. If the guy busts, well, smart for not actually drafting him.

May Jerruh live to be (and GM) 150 years old.

That offense may need to be prolific to get the Cowboys to 8-8. And while they're quite good, they're not prolific.
Nice vote of confidence

he's full of shit both days ... He's one of the few non politicians in the world who could say diametrically opposed things ... and be lying both times ... He's that good at it ...

Made the right pick.
The only remorse Jones has for Manziel
TheBigBlueOne : 7/28/2014 1:30 pm : link
is the lost marketing revenues. After giving Romo the boot in 2 years, he could have some slogan that goes, "Johnny's the Man the Cowboys Deserve," or some other shit pop culture reference.
A caller called into Ross Tucker this morning on the XM NFL Channel

and asked how the Cowboys can be a top 15 defense this year. Ross snorted and said I don't have any ideas how to make it a top 30 defense. He finished by saying that the Cowboys had the worst or the next worst defense in football.

It's typical Jerrah to keep talking about stuff like this,

but I can see it being a rational thing to happen on draft day. Things played out badly for Dallas in round 1. They really wanted Donald or Shazier, or maybe one of the DBs who went early. Their top targets gone, they had the choice of picking the player with the highest grade (but at a position with a starter who has the team in a contractual straightjacket) in Manziel, or settling for a player in Martin who they liked but projected at a low-salary position (Guard) that made him a poor value 16th overall.

That's the sad comedy - they made a damn good pick, and only Jerruh could think it a good idea to tell the media he almost picked another guy

is just mad at Martin for injuring the only guy he had on defense. Probably thinking if I would have drafted Johnny Football I'd still have Lee this season.
I remember Aikman saying ...

That he was surprised Jones didn't take Manziel.

And honestly, I am too.

Recall how Jones introduced the new Texas stadium - as a mystic cathedral. He spoke of the Cowboy aura and how he was humbled to be it's care-taker. The fans crave the next (bigger than life) Roger Staubach, not just the good football player (Romo)
