NFT: Visiting Chicago Advice

Nick in LA : 7/28/2014 1:15 pm
Hey everyone, I hope some of you have some expertise on the city of Chicago. My girlfriend and I are flying there next Friday and driving to Indy for the MotoGP race. We are doing one day/night in Chicago and I want to know what the must see things are. I am not really into the tourist traps though. I know one day isnt a lot of time but we will make the best of it! Thanks everyone in advance for your advice.
Go to Navy Pier

take the water taxi to the Museum campus and walk back through Grant Park, Millenium Park and make sure you check out the "Bean".

Walk up Michigan Ave anc check out the architecure of Trump Tower, Wrigley Bldg and the Tribune Tower.

Have lunch at Pizzeria Uno

Take the Segway tour around the Loop

Grab a beer at Harry Caray's

Take the Red line up to Wrigley field

If you can't get a ticket go to Murphy's and have more beer

Have dinner at Shaw's then go next door and catch whatever Jazz is playing at Andy's

Wander up to Rush St and into whatever night club looks inviting to you

Stumble home with a smile on your face...
Its crazy

I just read a story about how many shootings are in Chicago per weekend, its crazy over 1400 just this year so far

There is a chicago website that has chicago shootings tracker

Its almost sickening, kids, toddlers, gangs, all getting shot

on the River. Unfortunately the day I went it was so foggy we couldn't see much. But it was still fun.
I wonder how this Marty character

acquired this knowledge of the Windy City.

I will be there in Oct or Nov and if I don't get a good Chicago dog I will be angry.

Nice ride on the rivers, and pretty informative. It actually made me appreciate (and notice) architecture.

you just described pretty much every large city in America. Congrats. Unless of course you feel babies and women are only shot in Chicago.

Reality is Chicago's numbers are large... because Chicago is an incredibly large and vast city.

On a % of population basis or sq foot basis, give me Chicago over New Orleans, Detroit or even Washington DC any day of the week.

And, again of course, there are good parts to large cities, and bad parts. Avoid the bad ones and use common sense and you'll be fine.

You're welcome.

and a big thanks to everyone who made great reccos on this thread including chicago marty.

given you only have 1 day, you are not going to be able to do a deep dive into any of the amazing museums/galleries sites.

i would go to the tourist center in the waterworks building and do a hop on hop off tour of the city. best way to cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time. if it's a nice day, go to bobby's bike rental and do a tour of the northern neighbourhoods where you can cover a lot of territory. or do the the chicago architerctual foundation boat tour (at the bridge by michigan avenue/chicago river) where you can cover a lot of ground and learn about the magnificient and varied skyscrapers.

for food, someone recommended here Eataly - and a big second vote for that spot!! they have like 7 or 8 different microrestaurants, a brewery, a wine tasting bar and then a gelateria, espresso bar and sweets/nutella bar downstairs. we went to the fish restaurant and everything was perfect. i'm kind of glad i don't live in chicago as i would eat here 7 days a week.

i did the sears tower (willis) skydeck thing where you stand out on the glass cube overhanging the building and nearly passed out, but it was cool.

I tried both Lou Malnatti's and Giordano's when I was in Chicago and preferred Giordano's by a large margin. Both had long waits.
Eataly is the place I recommend in every Chicago

I was blown away by eataly chicago...i can't believe there are only two locations in the U.S. at the moment. That will change. The casual fish restaurant blew my expectations - the seafood was fresh, the ingredients were all high quality and elegantly prepared and the wine selection was outstanding.
This was lunch in the Birreria

i had the octopus and salmon/watermelon/radish apps at the fish restaurant and they were prepared to perfection; paired with a fruity sauvignon blanc (prail - colterenzio) and it was actually the perfect meal, even before they brought out the mains (locally sourced bass and a full skate respectively)
