Cuban defector Rusney Castillo will have a private workout with the Yanks soon. It's expected that he will sign with a team within 2 weeks. He had an impressive workout in Miami in which the Yanks sent 4 scouts to observe.
Nothing like picking up a big bat out of nowhere. From the rotoworld blurb I read, they called him Brett Gardner with power which would be a really good major league player.

Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that the Phillies are going to hold a private workout with Cuban outfielder Rusney Castillo on Tuesday.
Castillo's showcase on Saturday in Miami drew officials from 28 major league teams and the 27-year-old apparently put on a show, running a 60-yard dash in 6.4 seconds and showing impressive power to all fields during batting practice. Castillo is represented by Jay-Z's Roc Nation Sports management group and is thought to be seeking a contract worth more than the $42 million that Yasiel Puig got from the Dodgers. The Red Sox and Yankees also have private workouts scheduled.
that 6.4 60 yard dash is equivelant to a 4.26 40 yard dash and would easily put him in the upper echelon of MLB speed.
One nitpick with that conversion is that your initial reaction (i.e. your "jump") will have less of an impact on a 60 yard dash time vs a 40 yard dash.

an important nitpick. also, straight line speed isn't necessarily out of the box speed. One of the articled about the workout instructs that his speed should be considered a solid "70", and that sounds about right.
6.4 is where a lot of players are at and KMED, no chance a 6.4 equals a 4.26
OK i shouldnt say no chance, but very slim chance your math is correct there, i will figure out when i get home later
prob more like a 4.5
because if he ran a 6.4 and thats 4.26, then gardy would have been a sub 4 40 yard dash? impossible
His math is a pretty simple ratio: 6.4/60 = X/40. If you solve for X, you get a 4.2666. Following a similar procedure, a 6.2 60-yard dash would equal a 4.133 40-yard time.
BUT, that's not an accurate conversion between the two sprints because the slowest 10-yard segment is going to be the first 10 yards when you're accelerating. Thus, a 60 yard dash is more representative of your "top end" speed.
but regardless...he's fast as hell and still in the upper echelon of MLB speed. I think MLB average speed is 7.0 in the 60. His 60 speed is comparable to the top speedsters in the game.

it's the worst transcript in human history but there are some nuggets in there worth reading. Link - ( New Window )
I didn't understand a single word of that. I'm not even sure there's a language associated with it. But it does inspire me to listen to the podcast later on today, so thanks. I did see a SoxPros post showing a Callis tweet earlier. In the tweet is opinion is that the Sox have a top three farm system.

Talk to an executive and they will tell you some version of: #Yankees in on everything, but very reluctant to move best of system
I understand why it's not the same, but when you compare his 60 time with that of other MLB players, he's still in the upper echolon.
For sure. In the BA report on the workout, the scouts graded his running from 60-80 on the 80 scale. Pretty sure Gardner was an 80. Based on that, you'd have to assume he'd be in the top 10-20% of MLB players.
I totally want the Yanks to spend some $$$ on this guy. Glad they are doing a private workout.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Monday that Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) "feels better and better."
It's been nearly three weeks since Tanaka receive a platelet-rich plasma injection in his right elbow. While it's encouraging that he's feeling better, it means little until he resumes throwing from a mound. The odds of Tanaka eventually requiring Tommy John surgery to repair a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament are still high.

That'd be a perennial all-star.

But, what exactly does "Brett Gardner with power" mean? That isn't like Brett Gardner at all.

Sounds like Carlos Gomez.
gardner does not run a 4.1 40
In any case, seems like a player we can use right about now.

Yeah, it's not linear. The last 20 yards are always faster than the first 20.

#Yankees called up Zoilo Almonte, DFAd Jeff Francis

No. Castillo's a different player, very different approach RT @DavidEnglander Castillo is Gardner/Ellsbury type w a little more power?
