NFT: Overnight hiking in Northeast?

tbonfig : 7/28/2014 3:03 pm
Looking to get away for a long weekend and take a hike/camp out. Anyone have any spots that they really love?

I'm thinking I would do a 3 day/2 night journey. Would love to have rivers/waterfalls involved with some spectacular views.

Haven't done this in about 15 years so I'll need to gear up.

Would love some BBI opinions....

Camping isn't allowed, though. You can pick any mountain further north in Ulster County (think Hunter) and find hiking and biking trails, and places to camp out.

Closer to NYC, you have Harriman State Park which includes Bear Mountain Park.
So many places.....

Genesee Valley Greenway trail in western New York goes by Letchworth State Park with the 600-foot deep rock gorge and one of the largest gravity dams in the northeast

Pine Creek Gorge trail in northwestern Pennsylvania (PA's Grand Canyon) 35 mile long deep rift in the earth

Northern end of the Adirondack Railroad in Franklin County, New York. Tracks are gone from Lake Clear Junction to the Canadian border.

Amazing.

I'm going to look into these. I'm in lower CT so id be looking for something that isn't too far away to make the most of the time.

Like I said, been a real long time since I have hiked and camped it. Can't wait.
Farther north is the Adirondack state park.

Pretty much anywhere. Pick up a trail guide from the Adirondack Mountain club. Should be available online .

I recommend Lake George area. Sleeping Beauty Mountain on the Southern part of Lake, there's a nice 11 mile hike further north that'll take you to Montcalm pt- good little peninsula to set up camp for the evening, then in the morning pack up and hike up French Point Mountain. Spectacular views of the lake. And all free. Just don't be an ass and make sure to carry out what you carry in. :)

In the Northeast I've only done

White Mountains, great terrain, great scenery, all levels of difficulty. Some good spots along the Kankamangus Highway

Not in the Northeast, but I like the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia too.

one other interesting "hiking" trip I did was down the Ipswich river.

instead of hiking, we loaded our gear into canoes and canoed 5 miles down the river to an isolated island. We (two couples) were literally the only people on the island.

No bathrooms, no showers, no cabins, no water other than the river.

most rural camping I've ever done.

from west central Mass to Sterling CT. Pretty good. Lots of great scenery. Don't bite off more than you can chew though. You'll climb highest peeks in both MA and CT. I'm 59, but it took me 4 days to cover 35 miles last summer.
