Giants Claim Mark Asper Off Waivers; Terrell Thomas Signs with Seahawks - ( New Window )
I'll never understand the issue on arm length.

The guy is 6'7". How much arm length does he need, and what is "ideal"?

when he was 100% he was a great corner. great run stopper - physical beyond his means. a tom coughlin type of guy. hope his knee holds out and he can prove himself all over again out west. perhaps a real good fit for him.
Arm length might be important on CB's

and even WR's

that article is interesting but it doesn't really explain why 3" in arm length difference is so important on two OTs that are both 6'8" and 330 lbs. It bases the conclusion on outcomes (perhaps correctly), but doesn't explain why. Justin Pugh has 32" arm length and he did OK last year.

you don't see many right tackles in the NFL built like Pugh (not just arms). He's an anomaly. He reminds me more of an OL you would see in the 1980s.

the longer your arms, the easier it is to keep your opponent from getting into your body.

Quote:

“From an offensive tackle perspective, you are typically looking for about 33, 33 and a half inches, especially if he’s going to be on the left side,” said Mayock. “Remember, Robert Gallery several years ago had 32-inch arms. Struggled on the outside. And where it shows up most is in pass protection. The longer your arms are, the better your ability to shoot the hands, get them on somebody and just continue to push a defensive end away from your quarterback.

“The shorter your arms are, mathematically, the quicker that defensive end can get the edge on you. Doesn’t sound like much, a difference in an inch or two, but it really is the difference between sometimes being able to push or rush a quarterback; who gains the edge. From an offensive tackle perspective, it’s much more important for that tackle than it is the guard because the guard is in the middle of all that trash on the field and there’s nowhere near as much room for the defensive player to maneuver.”

The length of the tackle's arms are very important. An offensive lineman with short arms is a big concern. I cannot stress to you enough how important this is in the NFL. The offensive lineman must be able to get good extension with their arms to keep the defender at bay. If the defender can get inside to the lineman's body...the defender can get the advantage.

Thanks for linking the article. I initially had the same reaction as Del, so I appreciate the folow up info as well.
Surprising (maybe not) how many people around here didn't pick up...

...on the real football guys of BBI talking about the 'hand fighting' and 'locking out' that goes on in the trenches to wonder why arm length is a concern. Read Joey's scouting report on Tuck returning to form last pre-season as an example.

Pugh was praised repeatedly on Sirius by former O-line coach Bob Wylie and many others for being in perfect position so often, especially for a rookie. He overcomes the arm issue with great feet/technique. As an aside, he supposedly got a lot stronger in the off season, and that should be a something to look for.
Oh, for the old days,

when the offense players weren't allowed to use their hands. (-:)
If that were true today, the hospitals would be full of QBs.
