just tied Yaz for 7th all time on the hits list (3,419). Just for perspective, the last time anyone active had that many hits was when Pete Rose was in his last year (1986) breaking Cobb's all-time record
since Judge got to Tampa. The fact that they're consistently pitching around Judge to get to a very good hitter in Bird tells you a lot about the respect for Judge.

McCann was the one decent contract that they gave out to hitters in the off-season but not even he has been worth anything close to what he's being paid.

I believe these are the records from Baseball Reference. MLB officially has him past Anson already (Anson played 4 years in the Federal League, which is disputed as to whether it should be counted as a Major League or not; and alson one of his years in the NL, walks were counted as hits, so he's got a few possible numbers).
Also, MLB seems to have Wagner with 3430, not 3420. Either way, he'll pass both of them.

the infield defense has been putrid too. Hopefully Headley can stabilize it somewhat, but with Teix frequently on the shelf, Roberts shitty and Jeter just old it really is a liability.

yeah ... rooting for them, but hopes aren't too high right now.
I'd almost rather they just leave Ryan in there. Headley/Jeter/Ryan/Teix is tolerable. Probably a little below average because Jeter is what he is and Ryan isn't a natural 2B, but better than we've seen for most of the year. Roberts isn't hitting much, might as well give the pitchers as much defensive help as we can.
Total flop at the plate, he's been a flop at 1st when he has been their., and what's funny is when we signed him people were saying he could be the first basemen in a few years. No thanks!!!!
they have a real reluctance to call the kids up because everyone presently on the 40-man needs a spot after the season. That's why Zoilo was the first choice even though he may not be the best candidate. Backing yourself into a situation where you have to cut a prospect and probably lose him is not a good spot.
Jeter had a legit shot at the top 5 before he got hurt and
missed last year. And as for the fools who call him a "compiler", how do you get to 3,000 without longevity? Just so many stupid people out there. And how do you achieve longevity? By sustaining excellence.
The problem with this team isn't so much the injuries to the
pitching, which hasn't helped. The problem isn't Jeter in the 2 hole, even though he's a shell of his HOF self. The problem with this team is that we brought in 2 guys that were supposed to be the run producers in Beltran and McCann and they've been terrible. Both guys with terrible BA's and sub .300 OBP's to go along with a lack of run production. It's absolutely killed this team.
I also read Jeter getting slammed routinely on these threads
and I'd like to point something out. I understand that he's just a singles hitter right now. He's got minimal pop, but out of all the SS's in baseball:
7th in batting average
6th in OBP
25th in runs
That tells me that the guys behind him aren't doing their jobs. So while Jeter just isn't the same HOF player that he was in his prime, he's not getting any help from the middle of this order that's been putrid.
good point kmed. Beltran is a fossil. McCann seems ill suited
to NY. He was the only signing that I thought made any sense of the 3 but he has "spit the bit" so far. Ellsbury is what he has always been: above average, but not a guy who can carry a team. Brian (PeeWee Herman) Cashman said it himself: Garner and Ellsbury are the same player. Only Cashman was stupid enough to pay him double + what he paid Gardner. It speaks to Gardner's intelligence and maturity that he hasn't complained or made any cracks about it. So,once again, Cashman bid against himself to overpay 3 guys.

also a good point kmed. Jeter is for a 40 year old having a terrific season. He has nothing to be ashamed of. If the rest of these guys got as much out of their ability as he does they wouldn't be struggling to score 3 runs per game. The guy brings it every day and leaves everything on the field.
at this point he is barely average, maybe even below average, on the basepaths, so that might be some of why those hits and walks aren't turning into runs. Quibble about where he is in the lineup, but he's still getting on base at the third best clip among full-timers on the team. The defense is predictably mediocre and he grounds into too many double plays, but if we could sign up for his slash line at the beginning of the year it would have been a no brainer.
and isn't getting extra base hits which plays a role in the lack of runs, but he does have 8 SB's(1 CS) and he's getting on base at a decent clip. He should have so many more runs, but the middle of this order is killing us.
Michael Pineda (back) has been cleared to begin a rehab assignment after throwing a successful simulated game Tuesday.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi described Pineda during the sim game as "really good." It's not clear where he'll be assigned for his rehab assignment or what day it will begin, but it will come later this week. He'll throw 60-65 pitches and/or four innings in his first rehab start. Pineda is tracking towards a mid-August return if all goes well.
not being a pull-hitter would be more important than how many home-runs you hit? The inability of some hitters to adjust to where the pitches are thrown is absolutely destroying some previously great hitters.
Teix, Beltran,McCann and Headley all hitting in the .230s. I can't believe how poorly so many hitters have played this year for us.
When Gardner is our best average hitter with the second most HRs on the team and it is almost August, there are a lot of vets who need to wake the hell up.
1-0 and Darvish looking mortal-ish.
Jesus. Well if he isn't going to hit it on the ground he better poke a few.
wow.
Darvish is stunned.
2-0
He has turned into a very good player
Wonder why he doesn't try to steal more often? He's good at it.
He is the first player to ever hit 2 HR in a game off Darvish.
Guess I should be careful what I wish for.

yes, but Dorgan does.
Phelps one bad inning and pfft. Has to be demoralizing.
yeah ... rooting for them, but hopes aren't too high right now.
And call up Webb next time Thorton shits the bed.
Hopefully this mini skid has convinced Cash we should in way be selling off high level kids to improve this team.

That's a revelation, at least to me. Thanks for bringing this to light.
(but I'm still glad they didn't give Cano a ten-year contract. We'd be saying the same thing about him in three or four years.)

power surge. Career high HRs.
Gardner might be asked to pee in a cup after these two games.

1-1
3-1 TEX
Curse of Cano continues.
Glad he is not slumping defensively or anything...
Glad he is not slumping defensively or anything...
They weren't defending the steal.
blah
Gardner with another double right past that slugging firstbaseman.
At least chuckie could hit.
two run single.
4-3
I'd love to know who is slower - Jeter to first or Teix from 3rd to home.
Glad it took this long for him to get a call up.
7-4 with a double. Good thing the CF was almost on the infield.
8-4
Give him a triple or give them two errors - each.
April against Boston
What's amirite? An element from the periodic table?
McCann with the popup to the infield.
Cmon Chase.
Teix was never ever going to score from second.
Betances time.
10-8
fucking texas. Get them some humidifiers.
Betances time.
So has Betances.....
Verducci: Dylan Be-tahn-sez
Pfft - Gardy put two over that wall last night and one tonight - 407 ft.
McCann with warning track power.
Fucking game.
I thought the Giants were playing this Saturday. Didn't know football had started already.
This is just unreal. We lose this game and it is going to be a backbreaker.
gawd
- Warren
- Carlos Torres
- Betances
Of course they're both gassed. Nice to see the Yanks score. Be even nicer if it happened at Yankee Stadium once in a while.
I'm looking forward to seeing the real Brian McCann in 2016.
