In addition to the shitty offense...
Dunedin81 : 7/28/2014 11:16 pm : link
the infield defense has been putrid too. Hopefully Headley can stabilize it somewhat, but with Teix frequently on the shelf, Roberts shitty and Jeter just old it really is a liability.

yeah ... rooting for them, but hopes aren't too high right now.
As bad as Roberts has been...
Dunedin81 : 7/28/2014 11:27 pm : link
I'd almost rather they just leave Ryan in there. Headley/Jeter/Ryan/Teix is tolerable. Probably a little below average because Jeter is what he is and Ryan isn't a natural 2B, but better than we've seen for most of the year. Roberts isn't hitting much, might as well give the pitchers as much defensive help as we can.
Why Refsnyder is not up already is mind boggling.
BlueHurricane : 7/28/2014 11:47 pm : link
Does Roberts have incriminating pictures of Hal and Hank in drag???
love me some Cap
RasputinPrime : 7/28/2014 11:56 pm : link
so re2pect must be given to both.
They seem to think Roberts will improve at the plate...
Dunedin81 : 7/29/2014 7:06 am : link
because he's hitting the ball hard. But eventually you have to make peace with the fact that he simply sucks.
I think it is time for this team realize they need a youth infusion
BlueHurricane : 7/29/2014 7:20 am : link
Call up Refsnyder as soon as he gets out of his slump and dump Roberts

And call up Webb next time Thorton shits the bed.

Hopefully this mini skid has convinced Cash we should in way be selling off high level kids to improve this team.
McCann has been a
Giants Stadium7609 : 7/29/2014 7:27 am : link
Total flop at the plate, he's been a flop at 1st when he has been their., and what's funny is when we signed him people were saying he could be the first basemen in a few years. No thanks!!!!
As for the 40-man...
Dunedin81 : 7/29/2014 7:48 am : link
they have a real reluctance to call the kids up because everyone presently on the 40-man needs a spot after the season. That's why Zoilo was the first choice even though he may not be the best candidate. Backing yourself into a situation where you have to cut a prospect and probably lose him is not a good spot.
Jeter had a legit shot at the top 5 before he got hurt and
Victor in CT : 7/29/2014 7:58 am : link
missed last year. And as for the fools who call him a "compiler", how do you get to 3,000 without longevity? Just so many stupid people out there. And how do you achieve longevity? By sustaining excellence.
The problem with this team isn't so much the injuries to the
kmed : 7/29/2014 8:04 am : link
pitching, which hasn't helped. The problem isn't Jeter in the 2 hole, even though he's a shell of his HOF self. The problem with this team is that we brought in 2 guys that were supposed to be the run producers in Beltran and McCann and they've been terrible. Both guys with terrible BA's and sub .300 OBP's to go along with a lack of run production. It's absolutely killed this team.
I also read Jeter getting slammed routinely on these threads
kmed : 7/29/2014 8:09 am : link
and I'd like to point something out. I understand that he's just a singles hitter right now. He's got minimal pop, but out of all the SS's in baseball:

7th in batting average
6th in OBP
25th in runs

That tells me that the guys behind him aren't doing their jobs. So while Jeter just isn't the same HOF player that he was in his prime, he's not getting any help from the middle of this order that's been putrid.
good point kmed. Beltran is a fossil. McCann seems ill suited
Victor in CT : 7/29/2014 8:11 am : link
to NY. He was the only signing that I thought made any sense of the 3 but he has "spit the bit" so far. Ellsbury is what he has always been: above average, but not a guy who can carry a team. Brian (PeeWee Herman) Cashman said it himself: Garner and Ellsbury are the same player. Only Cashman was stupid enough to pay him double + what he paid Gardner. It speaks to Gardner's intelligence and maturity that he hasn't complained or made any cracks about it. So,once again, Cashman bid against himself to overpay 3 guys.

also a good point kmed. Jeter is for a 40 year old having a terrific season. He has nothing to be ashamed of. If the rest of these guys got as much out of their ability as he does they wouldn't be struggling to score 3 runs per game. The guy brings it every day and leaves everything on the field.
Jeter really is the least of our problems...
Dunedin81 : 7/29/2014 8:52 am : link
at this point he is barely average, maybe even below average, on the basepaths, so that might be some of why those hits and walks aren't turning into runs. Quibble about where he is in the lineup, but he's still getting on base at the third best clip among full-timers on the team. The defense is predictably mediocre and he grounds into too many double plays, but if we could sign up for his slash line at the beginning of the year it would have been a no brainer.
No doubt Jeter isn't the same base runner
kmed : 7/29/2014 9:44 am : link
and isn't getting extra base hits which plays a role in the lack of runs, but he does have 8 SB's(1 CS) and he's getting on base at a decent clip. He should have so many more runs, but the middle of this order is killing us.

That excuse works in April, not the end of July. As good as he was in his prime its time to admit he's washed-up.

(but I'm still glad they didn't give Cano a ten-year contract. We'd be saying the same thing about him in three or four years.)
Good news!
kmed : 7/29/2014 7:16 pm : link
Michael Pineda (back) has been cleared to begin a rehab assignment after throwing a successful simulated game Tuesday.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi described Pineda during the sim game as "really good." It's not clear where he'll be assigned for his rehab assignment or what day it will begin, but it will come later this week. He'll throw 60-65 pitches and/or four innings in his first rehab start. Pineda is tracking towards a mid-August return if all goes well.

not being a pull-hitter would be more important than how many home-runs you hit? The inability of some hitters to adjust to where the pitches are thrown is absolutely destroying some previously great hitters.

disgusting averages

Teix, Beltran,McCann and Headley all hitting in the .230s. I can't believe how poorly so many hitters have played this year for us.

When Gardner is our best average hitter with the second most HRs on the team and it is almost August, there are a lot of vets who need to wake the hell up.
