A nice look at a guy who walked away from the game on his own terms. If nothing else, it is really interesting to see what some of these guys look like when they're not trying to stay at 320+ for half the year. Link - ( New Window )
even in college. The differences are striking once they retire. Alan Faneca had just as drastic a change. It is funny, one player said that the o-lineman all deflate and the RBs get heavy once they retire.
a buddy I run with was the starting center for U of Montana for 4 years. said he'd sit down and eat whole pizzas for dinner just to keep his weight up. when he graduated he said he started running and dropped like 80+ lbs in no time while in his first year of law school, and ultimately turned himself into a sub 3-hr marathoner.

Right now, however, Kalil is choking down 7,000 calories each day, which is fairly typical for a growing NFL lineman. In the trenches, it's all about getting leverage on the guy on the other side of the ball, and being bigger than him is perceived as the way to do it. That's why the last four decades have seen a huge increase in huge linemen. They're called the Big Uglies, and we now take for granted that they pretty much all tip the scales at three bills or more. But for many of them to reach that weight, it's a never-ending battle to the bulge, and there's a definite downside to that mass consumption.
