Decent deal going on right now for those of you who previously bought in on the PS3 version of TLOU - you can trade in last year's model and get the shiny new one on PS4 for $25 (plus tax) at Gamestop. Even better if you bought the initial copy last gen, you get all the DLC, etc. added on.
While you're there, why not apply for a credit card? Rates are very reasonable at nearly 27% APR and they are even kind enough to award you with up to 15,000 Reward Zone Points....which translates to $15 for ruining your credit.
Great Deal!
Outside of that, we are in the Dead Zone of the gaming calendar.
Destiny's Beta closed shop on Sunday, but will be released in early September. Some rumblings that the game was going to be lacking in content after someone reviewed the resources in the beta and saw the various zones that were included. This was quickly refuted and the community was reminded it was a Beta, not a final product. Meanwhile, the $100 Limited Edition and $150 Ghost Edition are sold out basically everywhere.
Madden NFL gets a new coat of paint and a roster update ($60 please!) and hits late August.
October has Smash Bros on WiiU and 3Ds, Civilization: Beyond Earth and Assassins Creed: French Guy This Time.
November and December will likely come better into picture in the near-term future, but CoD: DudeBros in the Future! in November and Halo: Master Chiefs Reheated Leftovers in late November, too.
So - what's everyone playing? Or have we lost you to the summer weather...
I tried my hand at TLOU on PS3 and didn't care for it. Had it day one, actually, since the buzz was "obviously GOTY".
Uncharted meets post-zombie apocalypse wrapped in a first/third person adventure shell with (what else) shooting as the primary gameplay just didn't do anything for me. To each their own, I guess.

I enjoyed it, but got to Pittsburgh and like most people who find themselves in that city - just kind of gave up and decided it wasn't worth carrying on any further.
I've always meant to pick it back up, but something came up and then it hit that weird place where a game is too old to really pick it back up again. Was trying to convince myself this would get me through it, but maybe I have done enough with it already.
The last time I hate-beat a game was God of War 3 (hadn't played the others), where I just despised the gameplay but I masochistically decided to soldier on and finish the game anyway.
At the ripe age of 27, I'm too old and tired for that now.
Just hit the 3DS in May. Not likely going to be on the WiiU soon, I'd assume.
Smash 3DS style will be my go-to commute game until I reach my (Fox only, no items) final destination

Haha, no items is great. We usually turn off everything that is cheap (star, tomato, etc).
I wish the new Smash Bros emphasized throwing more. It was so important in the original and each one that comes out hasn't done it justice.
It sucked. Turn a corner, clicker. Fight. Turn a corner, zombie. Shoot. Rinse and repeat over and over. I think I remember making it to a flooded subway, and that was about it. The game was a big disappointment.
The overall storyline is boring and none of the characters are especially interesting beyond a few clever jokes, but this is a game where you can teleport barrels of water onto fire elementals, that includes special perk that lets you talk to animals (and get quests from a few of them), that makes your character look like he's crouched behind a goofy walking bush when you enter stealth mode, and that includes crafting recipes like "tomato + hammer = tomato sauce" (which you can then combine with dough to make pizza, of course).
It gives you very little guidance (no quest arrows!) and lets you stumble around into enemies well over your head unless you paid attention to that one NPC who mentions that the enemies to the west are a bit weaker. But the tactical combat opportunities are so satisfying. Cast a rain spell to make puddles (and help any partymembers who might be on fire), then shoot the puddles with a shock-enchanted arrow to electrocute everybody standing in them. Use smokescreens to make enemy archers get close to you. Or teleport a particularly troublesome opponent into a pool of lava.
It is simultaneously frustrating, tedious, and phenomenally satisfying.
I've heard nothing but rave reviews for the Last of Us but its interesting to see opinions saying otherwise. I was never able to get into the Uncharted franchise despite that always killing it review-wise
Can't get enough of FIFA right now. I hadnt played in a few years and that game just keeps getting better

This was exactly my reaction to Bioshock.
I played the Destiny beta. It was alright. I think the appeal of it to me will be the ability to play with friends. I tried to play it alone and it felt like a fine FPS, but not much else. The story seems pretty blah and I didn't really notice much in the way that distinguish between the different character classes.
I'll probably continue to play DOTA and Transistor while I wait for Dragon Age (annoyed that it got pushed back). I also think I'm going to try out that new LOTR game. They've all been pretty bad to this point, but this one looks passably interesting.
Now I'm hearing the gameplay sucks?
And Dragon Age is being delayed until November...
The new Dragon Age sounds like exactly what I want in one of those games. Army management plus Skyrim plus awesome Action-RPG. I can't wait.

I'm playing this game! Sort of. Mostly I'm just wandering around the first town (which seems like it may very well be the biggest town in the game - I have no idea), venturing outside and trying not to die. All of my party members seem very fragile.
I think part of the problem is I don't do very well with games that are open-ended at the expense of having some easily identifiable main focus. My party in Divinity is almost immediately thrust into so many quests, none of which I can identify as being the most important. Even in a game like Crusader Kings II (a completely different genre, but a game with no win condition), I can set an objective for my dynasty and work towards it. Divinity, on the other hand, feels almost astoundingly directionless. I know this is a common problem among JRPG gamers upon diving into the CRPG genre, and I don't hold it against the game or its makers (Larian). It's an astonishingly well thought out and well put together product. I'm just not the target audience, I guess.

Still enjoying FFX-HD at a snail's pace. I forgot how easy the battles are - even by Final Fantasy standards, it's almost incomprehensibly easy. Then again, the first time I played the game I was twelve years old and had never played a turn-based RPG before in my life, so low difficulty curve was a plus. And I'm playing the game with my nostalgia glasses on (it's still my favorite game of all time), so the easy battles really don't bother me.
I'll also get to Bravely Default at one point, but I want to clear out any remaining DS backlog before I get to the 3DS stuff. I may just wait for Bravely Second and then play them back to back.
For me... I've mostly been playing the aforementioned, now that I'm done with The Wolf Among Us. FFX-HD on the PS3 and Crusader Kings II on PC.
I'm 360 years in or so on my current CK2 playthrough(started in 867 AD, so it's the 1230's now - the Mongols finally showed up not too long ago), and I've gone from one county in Ireland to controlling all of Great Britain, France, and Spain, plus the north half of the Italian peninsula, modern-day Morocco, BeNeLux, and a couple of duchies in West Germany. Acquired a lot of that land through a combination of skullduggery and dumb luck, too. My heir was betrothed to the eldest daughter of the king of Aquitaine, after which one son died of illness and the other two died under *ahem* suspicious circumstances. A few years later, the Catholic Church won a crusade to drive the Moors out of Spain + Morocco, and all of those lands were awarded by the Pope to the king of Aquitaine, who promptly died and passed those titles to the wife of my heir.
I got the next gen Xbox more or less cuz of brand loyalty; I had both the original and 360 and was just going with what I know, although in retrospect, maybe that was a dumb choice. I don't really care for FPS (though Borderlands was cool) or multiplayer capabilities all that much.
Been trying to keep my eyes open for straight-up trade-in offers but I think those ships have sailed...

Thanks Jan. I'm still gonna give it a go. I'm playing Watch Dogs now but I'm really not that into it and may return it early just to play The Last of Us.
I agree completely on Dragon Age. It seems like they delivered on their promise to mix together the best of 1 and 2. Thats the title I'm most looking forward to this year.

I loved it. It's worth playing for the story alone. The gameplay is a lot more about stealth than Uncharted is, which is still pretty great, but can be tedious if you just want to mash buttons.

Me too. I was going to forgo the LOTR game completely, but when it got pushed up and Dragon Age got pushed back... well, I could justify it.
They've put a lot of videos out of it online and it looks fantastic. Seems like a lot of action with the ability to pause and issue commands with the overhead view. I hope that it's as good as I've made it out to be in my head.
Still waiting for them to set up that website that will act as the harbor for the import of choices from the PS3.

Sorry - I think that boat may have already sailed unfortunately. They were doing straight swaps in the late March time frame, which is when I ditched my Xbone (for cash, as I already had a PS4).
Seems prices have fallen pretty rapidly, as I don't think demand for the console is really there (my Best Buy has a Limited Edition Titanfall Xbox One for sale still, so...).
You could still probably get $250'ish from a store or sell it on Craigslist with everything you have for around $350-400 and jump to the PS4. Either way, you're probably going to have to stay loyal or take a bit of a loss on what you invested into it already.
The game may have not been for you but it certainly didn't suck. Game was a masterpiece when it came to story telling. One of the best, if not the best looking game the last generation had to offer.
I'm digging it.

Who said it sucked, instead of it wasn't for them?
Also, those sorts of games as faux action movies always garner high praise for purportedly brilliant storytelling because they mimic said movies in terms of cinematics.
Plus there are pre-order DLCs with the cast of Alien (Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Cartwright, Tom Skerritt, Yaphet Kotto, Harry Dean Stanton) reprising they roles.

I am also a huge CK2 junkie. Although I tend to enjoy Scottish or Norse starts more than I do Irish ones. Sicily is also a lot of fun.
Aside, I can't get excited about Dragon Age. If it's really well received, I'll probably pick it up in 6 months or more, but I've got other fish to fry this winter. More Divinity, Wasteland 2, maybe the next Legend of Grimrock, and most importantly, Pillars of Eternity, which looks like it's going to be the real spiritual successor to the best Bioware games.

Yeah, Irish starts are basically easy mode because nobody takes much interest in you during early-game, so you have time to get your house in order. Now that I understand the mechanics pretty well I figured I'd see how quickly/how large I could blob.
Added Holy Roman Emperor to my list of titles. Feels good. My current emperor has reigned for over 50 years, so I'll probably spend the next few years consolidating while I wait for him to die, crush any revolts (unlikely, my vassals are well-trained by now), then try to weaken the Muslim presence as much as possible before the Mongols become a legitimate threat to my Eastern front. I wanted to take care of North Africa once and for all earlier, but I spent about 40K troops in the desert on crusade only for it to get called off when the defending caliphate changed rulers. Not making that mistake again.
Party-based, isometric, turn-based RPG.
The original Fallout was essentially a spiritual sequel to Wasteland (they couldn't get the rights for a real sequel) with a single protagonist and some more retro-futurism in the overall theme.
As for the game itself - I do think its really good and deserves most of the critical acclaim it received (though it got a bit crazy). It handles like a Naughty Dog game (which is good), but basically punishes you if you do not think out every move and carry out your plan of attack appropriately. You'll end up either getting destroyed when the fist bullet flies and everyone/thing descends upon you or you will end up completely without any supplies and have to choke out a room full of enemies on the next scene.
I also picked up Professor Layton for my 3DS when I stopped in to get TLOU. Its on sale for $10 and I've heard good things about it. Worth a flier at that price and luckily the Slickdealers/CAG'ers of the world have yet to ruin that deal for everyone else.
That's sucks...
That's sucks...
Why would they ever want to redo a game that's a licence to print money when they can release another game with everyone's favorite character....Lightning?

NOOO! Don't say that. FF15 looks so great. Or at least I thought it looked really interesting. Why does he say it's a disaster?
Although, now that I think about it, it's been in development for 10 years or so. Bah!

Apparently ff15 is a disaster as well. Childhood down the drain.

He can't get into specifics, but he didn't have anything good to say about it. He's been telling me for years to not get my hopes up and I think he's taking an even stronger stance on that now.

A while back one of the Square higher ups said something along the lines of "If we redo FF7, we're basically done as a company". I wonder why they'd do that now?
That's really sad about FF15. I had really high hopes for it after seeing the combat footage that they released.
And I will continue to believe that FF15 will be good, if only because Toriyama hasn't gotten his hands on it. I've generally liked the output from Nomura and Nojima.
