Seriously, is his spot on the team riding on whether he performs as a WR in addition to his return skills? That seems to be the contention here but I have trouble believing it. Has TC and/or JR said so? I would think being a kick-ass returner would be enough. Wasn't he "just" that for Denver and isn't that enough? Would he leave there for here if so much more is demanded of him (granted, I don't know all the circumstances surrounding his departure)?
Also, it isn't just about the WR position. How are we looking at other positions? Do we keep 3 QBs? 2 FBs? 4 TEs because nobody steps up? Do we keep 9-10 DL? Do we keep 10 DBs? We need to see the bottom third of the roster as a whole as well.
Not sure they can waste a position on a returner alone. Personally, he is so dynamic, I hope he makes it.
#1 he's 5' 5" (maybe), and this is sometimes debated about Eli with guys like Moss and Jernigan, but I think it's really all QB's - they don't like throwing to 5' 5" WR's.
#2 he's 28 and has 2 career receptions, so why has he never cracked a WR rotation before?
If he needs to be in the WR rotation to make the team and I was oddsmaker (or a know-it-all fan) I'd say odds are against him.
I'm rooting for him, since he's legitimately electrifying (when he holds on to the ball), but with Demps, Wilson, Jernigan, Randle, and others there's just a lot of options who can also play positionally they may not afford the Giants the luxury of keeping Holliday.
Holliday is a vested vet now - for the first time in his career. While that's not a big factor because his cap number is so low, it does create an incentive to keep him off the Week 1 roster if the final cuts are a difficult call and it comes down to him vs. a younger player with more upside. I won't be surprised if Holliday is released in September then re-signed later in the year to give the return units a boost as injuries free up roster spots and Beckham takes a bigger role on offense. I think TH will be in the League this year, somewhere. I'm just not sure he's better than the Giants' alternatives by a big enough margin to make this team. It's a nice problem to have.
Keep in mind that you don't just need room for him on the roster. In order for his presence to serve any purpose, you also have to reserve an active slot for him. That's not true of most guys he will be competing with for the 53rd roster spot. A player like Harris, Washington, Berhe, Fox, Herman or Jackson offers value even as a healthy scratch, by providing inter-game depth and long-term potential; Holliday, not so much. Of course, they are also eligible for the practice squad, so that's an option for them if the Giants think they can clear waivers.
