Holliday

Seriously, is his spot on the team riding on whether he performs as a WR in addition to his return skills? That seems to be the contention here but I have trouble believing it. Has TC and/or JR said so? I would think being a kick-ass returner would be enough. Wasn't he "just" that for Denver and isn't that enough? Would he leave there for here if so much more is demanded of him (granted, I don't know all the circumstances surrounding his departure)?
A kick-ass returner?

Maybe if he could hold on to the ball.
Maybe it's just me,

But his stock seemingly continues to fall with the fans and media (no idea about the coaches).
OK

Out of respect for Robbie, I'll re-phrase...A kick-ass returner WHEN HE CAN HOLD ON TO THE BALL.

It is hard for the Giants to use a roster spot strictly on a one dimensional player especially when that player has ball security issues. I know some other teams do it but he needs to lake an impact somewhere else to help his chances of making the team. Other returnees can play other special teams positions if he is not an offensive or defensive player. Holiday is too small to really do anything else therefore if he really wants to make the team I would think he needs to show something other than being a good returner. In the OTAs he was getting a ton of work offensively. Now that the pads are on he seems to be doing really bad. Its not a guarantee that he gets cut if he doesnt produce offensively but his chances drop drastically. You can only dress so many bodies every game day. If he is dressing because he is our returner then he needs to be able to do more than that because we may really need him especially in this offense. In Gilbride's offense we used a max of 3 WRs. In McAdoo's offense 3 WRs seems to he our base offense where we can go 4 and 5 WRs. You can't dress 6 WRs every week. Does this help?

Also, it isn't just about the WR position. How are we looking at other positions? Do we keep 3 QBs? 2 FBs? 4 TEs because nobody steps up? Do we keep 9-10 DL? Do we keep 10 DBs? We need to see the bottom third of the roster as a whole as well.
lugnut I think his ability to be the #6

wr is a big part in whether he makes the team. They have Demps, Thurmond, Holliday and maybe Wilson (hopefully) who can return. Demps is likely to make it as a safety.

Not sure they can waste a position on a returner alone. Personally, he is so dynamic, I hope he makes it.

a lock IMO. Limited value as a WR. Main role is by far as a PR, but his value in that regard drops precipitously if he can't hold onto the ball. Can't trade the occasional explosive return for a dropped punt. Somebody that one dimensional really needs to excel at that skill. I'm not sure he does right now.
He has a few things
pjcas18 : 7/29/2014 8:35 pm : link
going against him in my amateur opinion.

#1 he's 5' 5" (maybe), and this is sometimes debated about Eli with guys like Moss and Jernigan, but I think it's really all QB's - they don't like throwing to 5' 5" WR's.

#2 he's 28 and has 2 career receptions, so why has he never cracked a WR rotation before?

If he needs to be in the WR rotation to make the team and I was oddsmaker (or a know-it-all fan) I'd say odds are against him.

I'm rooting for him, since he's legitimately electrifying (when he holds on to the ball), but with Demps, Wilson, Jernigan, Randle, and others there's just a lot of options who can also play positionally they may not afford the Giants the luxury of keeping Holliday.
Not a lock but he has a golden opportunity

if he can make himself valuable in the passing game as another option. Especially with our WRs getting injured in camp thus far...
his spot has more to do with others than him

if there is little to no KR dropoff to Wilson or Demps I see little value in keeping him just to return punts. especially when there are CBs and possibly WRs who add lots of value to the team in ways in the positions they play
I dont think

he is making the team...
He's likely
muhajir : 7/29/2014 11:35 pm : link
the most explosive returner in the entire NFL. Teams will be S*&^ing their pants every time he's back there waiting for the ball. Hope he sticks and hope we get a chance to watch some electrifying returns this season.
Holliday is a luxury...

...and will always be one fumble away from the street. Let's see how he looks in preseason. If he's still electric behind Quinn's return units, and shows good ball security, they might find a way to keep him. He faces a steep uphill climb at WR: Jernigan, Manningham and Harris appear well ahead of him for backup spots. There are good alternatives for the return jobs too: Demps/Wilson (KOR) and Beckham/Randle (PR) aren't exactly Delvin Joyce and a washed-up Brian Mitchell. If Holliday were competing with, say, Jernigan and Cox, returns would give him a bigger edge.

Holliday is a vested vet now - for the first time in his career. While that's not a big factor because his cap number is so low, it does create an incentive to keep him off the Week 1 roster if the final cuts are a difficult call and it comes down to him vs. a younger player with more upside. I won't be surprised if Holliday is released in September then re-signed later in the year to give the return units a boost as injuries free up roster spots and Beckham takes a bigger role on offense. I think TH will be in the League this year, somewhere. I'm just not sure he's better than the Giants' alternatives by a big enough margin to make this team. It's a nice problem to have.

Keep in mind that you don't just need room for him on the roster. In order for his presence to serve any purpose, you also have to reserve an active slot for him. That's not true of most guys he will be competing with for the 53rd roster spot. A player like Harris, Washington, Berhe, Fox, Herman or Jackson offers value even as a healthy scratch, by providing inter-game depth and long-term potential; Holliday, not so much. Of course, they are also eligible for the practice squad, so that's an option for them if the Giants think they can clear waivers.
don't think he makes the team
aquidneck : 7/30/2014 6:57 am : link
Hope I'm wrong. It'll mean he's found a way to contribute on offense. We've already got 3 roster spots locked up by pure special teamers. No room for 4.
