Consider me absolutely sold on Weston Richburg’s abilities to be a starter if it comes to that. He stoned defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins, seemingly with ease. To my eyes, Richburg has been one of the best rookies on the field, just by a hair over linebacker Devon Kennard.
I love hearing that about Richburg. It's no secret that I was driving his bandwagon prior to the draft, and so far it looks like he's justifying my faith in him. Keep it up, kid.
The play of the day was by tight end Larry Donnell, who caught a fade in the end zone (thrown by Ryan Nassib) against safety Cooper Taylor. Donnell did a great job extending for the ball and using his body to block Taylor out from making the play. It reminded me of a jump ball, except Donnell just looked so smooth in going up there for the pass.

Heads up play by tight end Larry Donnell to slide over to give Justin Pugh some help with Mathias Kiwanuka. The play ended up being a coverage sack for the defense, but it was nice to see Donnell recognize and adjust.
It's a capital mistake to get too giddy over one day of practice (and let's not forget that Donnell did have a fumble today, just before he caught his first TD pass), but we're so desperate to have a TE emerge, and by all accounts Donnell is slowly but surely separating himself from the rest of the pack. That isn't something I thought would happen a few months ago.
It doesn't sound like Holliday was doing much better when he was practicing. Rough week for the smurfs so far. Assuming that Randle is good-to-go on Sunday, I wonder if we'll see him returning punts? Maybe one or two of the new guys?
I truly think Holliday barely makes the team, if it all. Â
He's a specialist. He's REALLY small for a WR. He's got explosive potential at Returns, but that's only if he can avoid fumbles, or else I don't think he has much else to offer.
God - I hope Randle is not the punt returner anymore as Â
He doesn't have the immediate instincts, sharp cuts to do much of anything. And I really didn't think his ball security was all that good as he bobbles/muffs it as well, but seems to be fortunate with the result.
I think one of the reasons Eric Herman has been working at center... Â
Among the young receivers, Julian Talley seems the most likely candidate - maybe not to make the team, but to get PR reps in the early exhibition games.
but it looks like NY significantly upgraded 4 of the 5 spots along the OL and that's not even factoring in the progression of guys like Pugh and Mosely. Mosely may not even start thanks to Richburg but it's nice to know we have some live bodies on the bench.
The only question is Beatty at LT. IF he can just hold the fort we are going to be a lot better along the OL this season. Pugh at RT is fine. Schwartz at one guard. Walton at center. Richburg or Mosely at the other guard. Not bad....

Not good to hear the muffs with Jernigan. Perfect role for the guy and he still can't do it.
