NFT: Random question: Manu Ginobili... HOFer?

DanMetroMan : 7/30/2014 1:00 pm
If Worthy is a HOFer, is Manu? Similar "secondary" star type of players on great teams. I mean Joe Dumars is a HOFer.

Manu has a career 21.5 PER, which is good for 38th all-time, 4 NBA titles

4× NBA champion (2003, 2005, 2007, 2014)
2× NBA All-Star (2005, 2011)
2× All-NBA Third Team (2008, 2011)
NBA Sixth Man of the Year (2008)
NBA All-Rookie Second Team (2003)
FIBA Americas Championship MVP (2001)
Euroleague champion (2001)
Euroleague Finals MVP (2001)
All-Euroleague First Team (2002)
Italian Cup MVP (2002)
2× Italian League MVP (2001–2002)

My friend is a huge Nets fan and insists that Joe Johnson is a HOFer. He is out of his mind, agreed?

And yes, Manu is a HOF if you ask me
This guy doesn't believe so

16. Joe Johnson

Years in NBA: 13
NBA stats: 968 G, 17.5 PPG, 4.0 RPG, 4.3 APG, 0.9 SPG, 0.2 BPG
College stats: 53 G, 15.0 PPG, 6.1 RPG, 2.4 APG
NBA accolades: 7x NBA All-Star, 1x All-NBA Third Team, 2002 NBA All-Rookie Second Team
College accolades: None
International accolades: 2006 World Championships Bronze Medal

Joe Johnson has had an interesting career. He's the kind of player you'd assume had been on a bunch of All-NBA teams, given his reputation as one of the NBA's best three-point shooters and a steady slew of playoff appearances. However, with just one All-NBA appearance under his belt, Johnson has not distinguished himself from the league's other above-average guards over the course of his 13-year career. His Hall of Fame résumé would look a lot better if he won a ring or two, and given his sweet stroke, he'll have no shortage of quality teams looking for his services even as he gets into his late 30s.

If he can win a title as a key contributor, that could be enough to get him in.

And Joe Johnson won't even be on a ballot. That's one of the craziest things I've heard. If Stoudemire isn't hall of fame worthy there's no shot in hell JJ is one. If they considered defense into these things he would've never even been an all star.
no
oipolloi : 7/30/2014 2:29 pm : link
he was the third best guy on the team. His stats don't come close to warranting it.
love him
RasputinPrime : 7/30/2014 2:32 pm : link
but no. HOF has to mean something and he belongs in the HOVG.

Manu yes
Joe Johnson in basketball hall of fame is preposterous
He's a definite HOFer

You left the 2004 Olympics when Argentina knocked out the US and went on to win the gold. Ginobili was MVP. There are very few basketball players with as impressive a resume in NBA and International action.
Manu is a lock

Johnson likely won't see a ballot. Both don't require any thinking for the conclusions.

Joe Johnson ROTFL

Here's a better debate:

Thank you. When considering the NBA HOF you have to look at Manu's NBA body of work. Above average, no doubt. On par with the greats in the HOF? Um, let's keep the standards a bit higher where they are right now, thank you very much. Manu's fine body of work can be matched by at least 20 players anyone on this or an NBA board can think of. That doesn't make any single one of them special above the norm.

Did I love watching him play? Yes. Could he play against the greats and hold his own? Not so sure. HOF bench material at best.

#1... it's NOT the NBA HOF aka his international time is considered

#2 Worthy and Dumars are HOFers, his numbers compare pretty well with theirs.

Well said. His game is very unique, just like both Duncan and Parker. He relies on tons of creativity and angles. He's been a joy to watch and continues being great at his age.

Also considering he only averaged more than 30 mpg in 2 seasons his straight up per game numbers don't do him justice but he's a phenom by all advanced metrics.
Some of you should take a look at who has gotten into the HOF

Drazen Petrovic is already in, Manu is a lock.

Yes, he's a HOFer. Three HOFers on that Spurs squad; him, Parker, & obviously Duncan. Duncan is the most underrated player in NBA history in my opinion.
The Admiral is in too
