Dropped a number from my last tweet: Tyron Smith deal with @dallascowboys is $12.2m per year. That's how it's $98m over 8.

Tyron Smith's deal is for 8 years and averages $12. million per season, I'm told. That's $98 million. Ka-ching
Jerry, Jerry, Jerry!!!

That is a lot of dough for an OL...

The devils in the details as always, but on the surface it blows away Joe Thomas's deal...
I like this, and I like the Peterson contract.

Not to start a long-winded discussion, but it's about time NFL players start getting some fucking bank.
Wowzer...
barens : 7/30/2014 2:19 pm : link
He did need to be locked up because he's becoming an excellent left tackle, but that deal sure does seem rich, or at least at first sight it does.
These numbers dont mean shit

until you know the details like someone already said.

Unfortunately, about 45 o 47 other players on the team will be getting sh*$ because about 6-8 guys will be getting 80% of the cap.
that's a lot of cheddar
djm : 7/30/2014 2:26 pm : link
but like Robbie said, it's all about the guaranteed.

It should always be on the box. Comforting you. Calling out --"i'm good..i'll never let you down but if I do, i'm gonna make things all better"

is 5, right? So it's probably more like a 3-year deal, with a big option bonus at the start of year 4.

I'd like to do without the patented Tony Romo Insta-Pivot (TM) where he avoids the rush and beats us over the middle to Witten (who else) for a first down.

Frustrating jackass.

Is there a sport you know of where the money is evenly spread out between all players on a team?

Please let us know. Even the Yankees pinch pennies where they can at certain positions.

Is it a "1% vs. 99%" issue where there is no "middle class" in the NFL? Perhaps.

Of course, the league has set it that way. That's how it goes.

Smart teams will adapt.
Enoch : 7/30/2014 2:42 pm : link
A deep roster of "pretty good" players will often beat a team with a few big-money stars and scrubs at other positions.

I'd rather have 2 decent OTs each making half of Smith's contract. Same goes with CBs and Peterson.
Will be interesting to see the details
Deej : 7/30/2014 2:44 pm : link
If I was a player his age, not sure I'd want to be locked up that long. It's one thing if it was guaranteed, but they only keep him around in years 6-8 is if he's a bargain.

Football is different because of the size of the roster -53 players vs 25 Baseball. Can't really use baseball because there is no real cap.
It is definitely 1% vs 99% no middle class.

I think it sucks. Hard to build a consistent team when 1/3 of the players are signed to cheap 1 yr contracts and wave good by at the end of the year. Only thing good is the rookie cap. It was stupid to pay a guy that never was at an NFL practice more than 90% of the rest of the team without knowing if he could even play the game.

Everytime one of these ridiculous deals is signed it jacks the bar so high that it reduces the chances of re-signing your own players.
It is good for the player and I don't begrudge him the money he can get, he has earned that right. I just look at what it does to the other guys on that team.
ESPN reporting
Nick in LA : 7/30/2014 2:54 pm : link
deal is worth $110 million
Smith
stretch234 : 7/30/2014 2:55 pm : link
He is currently 23 and will not be 24 until Dec and is already really good. It is cheaper to do that now and worth it in the long run

He will make 32M the 1st 3 years of that extension(ages 26-28) which means only 8M after that is guaranteed
What is the point of extending a guy at an outlandish rate

BigBlueinChicago : 7/30/2014 3:13 pm : link
Any sport that has a hard salary cap doesn't want teams that are "consistent" because the cap forces movement of players from team to team every few years eliminating the concentration a few teams with the best players.

Other sports (NBA, MLB) try to work around it with a tax punitive enough to serve as a hard cap. (see: Brooklyn Nets - $90 million tax bill in 2014)

Some teams in the NFL (and now the NHL) are able to work the system better than others, but it's all a race against the clock. Unless you have a few select generational type players who can overcome your deficiencies, a good team who drafts and develops its players will always fight an uphill battle to keep them over the long term.

Why? Because when you run short of money to pay them because of the hard cap, other teams will have money to pay them instead.

It does penalize teams for doing every right to acquire all those players and developing them into big players. Once one accepts that is simply part of business, you work within the system.

8 yr. extension,
bob in tx : 7/30/2014 3:28 pm : link
$ 10M signing bonus,$ 40M guaranteed, paid $32M during first 3 years.
At his age the details aren't that important
BillT : 7/30/2014 4:00 pm : link
He's going to, barring injury, get through most if not all if this contract. I'm sure there are safeguards for possible injury but this is a ton of dough for anyone. Nothing like an owner who likes to make headlines any way he can. And he's still in lousy cap shape.
So its about 10 million a year for 4 years
Reale01 : 7/30/2014 4:14 pm : link
Top LT money, but not stupid.
Since he plays for Dallas, I feel no shame in saying this
mfsd : 7/30/2014 4:17 pm : link
good for Smith, and I hope he suffers through several injury filled, unproductive years while his deal hamstrings the Cowboys cap
Wish I could get:
mrvax : 7/30/2014 5:43 pm : link
thousands of posters behind my 80% cash against the cap rule.
This rule change would allow a team to only count 80% of a player's new contract towards the cap if that player was originally drafted or signed by that team.

It would help teams & fans keep the player they originally groomed and the player doesn't lose a dime. Teams that draft well would be rewarded most.

This change would of course have to be passed by the NFL and the players union.

Headlines! Jerry Jones is being talked about again.
Doesn't everbody extend a rookie with two year left on his contract?
Giants2012 : 7/30/2014 6:52 pm : link
Lol

Why wait until next offseason when he can spend more against his cap today? Refinance Romo again Jerry
Smith
stretch234 : 7/30/2014 7:00 pm : link
The Giants did the same thing with Chris Snee. If you think a player is going to be a long term piece you sign him to an extension. Especially when the majority of guaranteed money will be paid by the time he is 28

If you wait and start dealing with franchise tag numbers, in 2 years it may be double what it is now for a franchise LT.

Would you really want to pay what a 25 year old Pro Bowl LT would command on the open market in 2016
.
Giants2012 : 7/30/2014 7:09 pm : link
Would have signed him next year at this time

No. He's 23. Barring disastrous injury, he's playing more than 4 years.
Good player

Not oulandish, I think its about time teams start showing love to players other than QBs as far as extending them before the final year of their contract. The salary cap makes teams make tough choices, but I am glad a couple of guys who are not QBs made their respective teams feel the need to boost their salaries. appreciating their efforts, instead of hard balling them and getting all they can out of them on their rookie deals, and then franchising them, perhaps twice. Oh man, I must be a socialist.
Tyron Smith is really fucking good
David in LA : 7/30/2014 11:32 pm : link
and that's a pretty decent contract. I hate Dallas as much as any of you, but that deal worked out nicely on both parties.
