Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight has taken an unusual path to production – even by Tarantino’s outside-the-box standards. For a while, this was going to be his follow-up to the Oscar-winning Django Unchained, keeping the writer-director in spaghetti Western mode. Then, as you might recall, the script leaked… and all hell broke loose. But the project appears to be back on track, and the poster above suggests a 2015 release date is in the cards.

Empire shares the image above, clarifying that Quentin Tarantino’s eighth picture will be the revenge epic The Hateful Eight, with a crimson-colored 2015 in the corner to get fans’ hopes up. The poster teases a "Special Roadshow Engagement" in 70MM Super CinemaScope, which is twice the film stock ratio of a traditional 35MM and was utilized – in the pre-IMAX era – for larger-than-life epics such as Ben-Hur, Cleopatra and Lawrence of Arabia. Paul Thomas Anderson was the last American director to play with the format in 2012 for The Master. It sounds like Tarantino is going to paint on a massive canvas for this bloody soap opera.

What else do we know about The Hateful Eight? A lot, actually, thanks to all of the details that emerged as Quentin Tarantino tried to sue the Web site Gawker for pointing readers to a leaked copy of the screenplay. (The lawsuit has since been dismissed.) Kurt Russell, a member of the cast, recently revealed that The Hateful Eight would start filming early next year, meaning a late-year release date is probable. Could it open in December, like Django Unchained, and contend for awards?

The Hateful Eight sounds like it was going to be a return to the roots of Reservoir Dogs, limiting its locations to two small spaces and focusing on character and dialogue in a way that Tarantino hasn’t in years. Details claim that the story starts with a bounty hunter arriving in a town called Red Rock to drop off a prisoner and claim a reward. But the director has said that the script remains a work in progress, and I expect a lot of the details we already know to change because of the leak. Tarantino has said that the ending he had in the leaked script will have to change before he films anything.

We know for certain that Kurt Russell (Death Proof) will be part of Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight. And other names – from Samuel L. Jackson, Tim Roth, Bruce Dern and Walton Goggins to James Parks, Michael Madsen and James Remar – have been attached, but I don’t believe have been confirmed. If the poster is the first step toward legitimizing Tarantino’s next picture, expect several more details to start falling into place as we approach next year.

in a Tarantino Western. I can't freakin wait to see that. I loved him in Death Proof.

Django was alright, definitely not one of Quentin's best, I think this one will be much better.
kurt russell is the man.

i still want a big trouble in little china sequel.

which was a western in many ways.
So which one doesn't count if this #8?
The Turk : 7/30/2014 5:04 pm : link
Reservoir Dogs
Pulp Fiction
Jackie Brown
Kill Bill 1
Kill Bill 2
Death Proof
Inglorious Basterds
Django Unchained

Does Kill Bill count as 1? Is Death Proof not really a QT flick because it was a Rodriguez instead??
My guess
butler : 7/30/2014 5:06 pm : link

Kill Bill is considered one film with two volumes.

I read the script
M in CT : 7/30/2014 5:33 pm : link
it's fantastic.

nobody writes dialogue like QT.
No one OVERWRITES
BurlyMan : 7/30/2014 6:14 pm : link
dialog like QT.
I read in an article that
madgiantscow009 : 7/30/2014 6:47 pm : link
he just steals dialog from other places.
When Basterds came out, a guy I worked with
Wuphat : 7/30/2014 6:49 pm : link
complained that it was too long, too violent, and too much dialog.

Apparently, he'd never seen a QT movie before that one.

I'll admit it, I'm a sucker for anything he does. Can't wait for this one.
is Christopher Waltz in it?
gtt350 : 7/30/2014 7:50 pm : link
he stole the last two movies. terrific actor.

"try the strudel"
Does that mean that after making seven
Upstate_Giants_fan : 7/30/2014 7:55 pm : link
he's finally due to make a good one?
if there wasn't a good one he wouldn't be on his 8th.

one movie.
Basterds was great

because he could have had the Oscar if he wanted, but then reminded Hollywood who he was with the theater fire & completely cartoonish Nazi slaughter.
No thanks.

I think QT is a major light weight.
He's a top director
UConn4523 : 7/30/2014 8:38 pm : link
who also writes terrific screenplays. Completely understand some people not liking him but his movies are awesome. Very few directors intrigue me the way he does.

I love dialogue and the way it's layered in his films. I love his "fuck you's" to Hollywood.
I would like to see QT and Beebs have a slap
GiantsUA : 7/30/2014 9:06 pm : link
fight. I think Beebs would knock him the fuck out.
I think my favorite of his might be

Death Proof, such an awesome soundtrack, and excellent character Dialogue. It's hard to rank but if I had to in order it would be.

Death Proof
Kill Bill
Pulp Fiction
Reservoir Dogs
From Dusk till Dawn (I know he didn't direct it but he wrote it)
Jackie Brown
Inglorious Basterds
Django

I guess I am partial to most of his earlier stuff, I just think his latest works have recycled a lot of the older stuff and there was little originality there. While yes he always makes some excellent actors/actresses with his writing (Christopher Waltz), the stories have kind of fallen flat as of late.

Basterds had a part which he completely copied almost word for word from Kill Bill, it was in the bar massacre scene with the guy pleading for his life as he just found out he was going to be a father or something. Total rip. I hope Russell is as good in this movie as he was in Death Proof, I've been waiting for him to come out with a movie on par with some of his earlier works for some time now.

Kurt Russell with the right role
RicFlair : 7/30/2014 10:16 pm : link
could be oscar worthy, I could see it happening and nothing would make me happier.

and True Romance is a great movie in the Tarantino universe, he wrote it but didn't direct.

Just curious about who you consider heavyweights. Thanks.
The problem with QT
Overseer : 7/30/2014 10:32 pm : link
(and I am a fan) is that he peaked SO HARD so early in his career. He made literally one of the best, most iconic, and unique films in modern history pretty much right off the bat and now people - either consciously or sub - expect him to equal or surpass it.

Thought Django was weak weak weak but he's mostly kept it together over the years. Russell was fucking hilarious in Death Proof so looking forward to him in another QT.
