Lester being sought by Cards and Pirates with Dodgers still in the mix.

Ryan Ludwick is apparently on the block. Has an option for next year, at 36 would be a youth movement for the Yanks.

Ned Coletti says Matt Kemp will not be dealt.

The Phillies are apparently asking too much for just about everyone.

Why
MookGiants : 7/31/2014 4:46 pm : link
is everyone in the media drooling over themselves about the Lackey trade for the Red Sox. Even when Craig was playing well he was overrated (barely above 2 WAR in his best years) and he's 30 and complete garbage this year. He also makes decent money. It's an OK return with him and kelly but nothing special.

Brian Roberts

Yankees got better and kept their best prospects. Those price rumors had me nervous.

Prado is a very solid player, versatile and considered one of the hardest workers, best teammates in the game. He's a throwback Yankee. He would have been beloved with Jeter, Bernie etc group. They gave up a guy who at BEST will head somewhere and be a solid DH/1b.

I just heard

two guys on MLB Network call Allen Craig tremendous.

Never at any point in his career has he been tremendous
nice story on Prado...

Just get the guy healthy for a change and I'll be happy. I suspect if hes throwing 65 pitches he'll be ready after two more starts at the latest if we need him.

Do we think Drew is better 2b than Kelly Johnson?

I both agree and disagree with you. Craig was overrated when he was good, Kelly has a great arm but isn't a great pitcher (could be a 4-5 or a good pen arm worst case) but Craig at 25 million over 3 years could end up being a pretty solid bargain. Craig's previous 3 seasons before 2014 he was worth 35.5 million using WAR (or about 12 per), if he bounces back to that level or close he's a nice player and Kelly is solid too. They didn't get some ridiculous return but for a 36 year old Lackey they did pretty well.
Drew is more versatile than Johnson because he can play SS
Greg from LI : 7/31/2014 4:58 pm : link
That's the main reason it's a decent trade. They needed someone who can even pretend to hit at a major league level (IOW, not Brendan Ryan) at short behind Jeter.

Stephen Drew's offensive season makes Derek Jeter's season look like Troy Tulowitzki's
He's still a better hitter than Ryan

Drew has actually started to hit in the last couple weeks
WeatherMan : 7/31/2014 5:06 pm : link
267/377/511 with a near normal 303 BABIP in his last 13 games. That power wont hold but he'll probably be a serviceable hitter the rest of the way, I'm glad he's gone because I wanted X at short the whole damn year
the hope is that Drew
PaulBlakeTSU : 7/31/2014 5:07 pm : link
bounces back after sitting out into the season over his contract demands. Perhaps he was also frustrated that the team he rejoined was the team who didn't pay him commesurate to his expectations. Maybe NY opens things up for him. That's the hope, anyway.
Yeah, but he's not better than Roberts or Johnson
BeerFridge : 7/31/2014 5:07 pm : link
That's the one I don't get. Unless they're auditioning him to sign next year, which is an idea I don't like either. Prado is a good deal.
did I not tell you The A's were shopping Cespedes

PaulBlakeTSU : 7/31/2014 5:16 pm : link
he has the image of a superstar and the production of just a good player. His OBP is .298 over the last two seasons. That is horrific. This type of "shopping" is Billy Beane's bread and butter.

Really like Prado
AJ23 : 7/31/2014 5:24 pm : link
.338 vs. LHPs, has really started hitting better since start of June.

Prado has struggled at Chase Field, batting .261 there and .279 on the road.

Also, shorter porch for him to get back some power he lost.
Stadium left-field line distance:
Chase Field - 330 ft
Yankee Stadium - 318 ft

He said a same was shopping cespedes. Wasn't discussed anywhere else. He knew that because Seattle talked to the As about him. Because Seattle didn't get him doesn't make him wrong that the As shopped him.
AJ
BigBlueShock : 7/31/2014 5:27 pm : link
that left field line number is deceiving. Left field may be short right down the line, but it gets deep very quickly. Yankee Stadium may be a bandbox in RF, but it is pretty damn spacious from center to left
I said the A's were shopping Cespedes over a month ago
capone : 7/31/2014 5:29 pm : link
to the Mariners and last week said the deal was dead . how the hell was I supposed to know where he would go to . I NEVER SAW A SINGLE REPORT that Cespedes could be moved and was laughed at when I suggested it.. but I shared it because it was surprising and thought you guys would find it interesting to have some inside baseball info but you people are such a-holes sometimes..

I know both ballparks have similar power alleys in left
AJ23 : 7/31/2014 5:48 pm : link
And I know Yankee Stadium is notorious for its short right porch - but a lot of data suggests the new Yankee Stadium is a very favorable place for RH batters.

In 13 and 14, RH batters hit home runs more frequently per AB in Yankee Stadium than any park but Toronto. http://rotogrinders.com/pages/Ballpark_Factors-49556

But it's not a big deal either way, considering Prado isn't what you'd call a power hitter

from SI.com:

The Yankees claimed right handed reliever Esmil Rogers off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays. Rogers is 0-0 in 19 games with a 6.97 ERA with the Blue Jays in 2014. Rogers isn’t an improvement over what the Yankees have in their monstrous bullpen, but he is insurance in case of injuries or other unforeseen circumstances occur.

Rogers come in to the organization like Jeff Francis did. Meaning it’s a “Eh… You never know” type of acquisition. More than likely Rogers will report to Triple-A Scranton Wilkes/Barre for some time and may find his way to the Bronx around September during roster expansion call-ups… or if the organization decides it can’t get any worse.

I would be fuming right about now. Franklin and Smyly for Price? Big deal so they threw in Adames. Friedman got completely bent over backwards on that trade. You don't trade franchise players unless you get back something with huge upside.

Tiger's rotation is scary - Verlander, Scherzer, Price and Sanchez.

Interesting that prospects are being valued so highly by both buyers and sellers and there seemed to be a market inefficiency associated with that (like the Ray's seemingly selling Price low by overvaluing prospects).

Rays
stretch234 : 7/31/2014 7:18 pm : link
The biggest problem is they have no fans. If they did they would not be in the position of having to get rid of pitchers (Garza, Shields & Price)

They certainly were not going to get more over the winter

They could have waited until the offseason and gotten more. Fuck, they might have waited until next year's deadline and gotten more.

this is the one that I need - I've been on the road all day and just got home. Looked at my phone and it had the news of the trades on it. Checked BBI and didn't see a discussion on this.

Now I can sit and read through all your opinions here - don't need the other thread for that.

Thanks!
anyone want to hazard a guess at the Yanks' starting lineup
Del Shofner : 7/31/2014 10:31 pm : link
tomorrow night?
...
AJ23 : 7/31/2014 11:45 pm : link
Gardner LF
Jeter SS
Ellsbury CF
Teixeira 1B
Beltran DH
Prado RF
McCann C
Headley 3B
Drew 2B

I don't see Girardi mixing up the top with the way they've been hitting lately. I could see him keeping McCann at 6 but i'd like to see him at 8, so I'm going to say he'll bat 7. Prado has been mainly sitting at 5 or 6 in ARZ lineup.

BTW, I didn't realize til now that Drew has been hitting decently as of late. BA has jumped from .128 to .176 in three weeks.

The Red Sox lineup should also be interesting tomorrow.
zero chance
MookGiants : 8/1/2014 12:28 am : link
Prado hits that high. He'll never hit higher than McCann.

Gardner
Jeter
Ellsbury
Teixeira
McCann
Beltran
Headley
Prado
Drew
