Lester being sought by Cards and Pirates with Dodgers still in the mix.
Ryan Ludwick is apparently on the block. Has an option for next year, at 36 would be a youth movement for the Yanks.
Ned Coletti says Matt Kemp will not be dealt.
The Phillies are apparently asking too much for just about everyone.
Plus teams are afraid to trade potential anymore.
Byrd negotiated a helluva deal with the Phillies!
Wonder if Alderson can giveaway CY to the Royals. They been looking for low level RH power bats with no luck. Trade CY to the Royals, pick up most of his salary. In return Mets get some IFA slot money. Essentially a risk free, $$ free RH power bat for the royals. Mets get another IFA. And Mets fans celebrate moving on from CY.
That's why mets pay his salary. Same as releasing him, get some small slot money in return = bag of balls. Continues to suck as a Royal, the cut him at a cost of zero.
Just trying to be creative. Something this FO hasn't been doing. Signing an IFA for $25k is literally a lottery ticket that most likely amounts to nothing for the Mets. The 1 in a 1,000 chance he is a back of the bullpen arm or 5th Of in 8 years? Why not try? And appease your fan base that you are so worried about??
I'd even consider Gee for Marisnick and Nicolino.
Why sign CY for his CF capabilities (which we misjudged btw) and put your faith in CY in Cf and EY in left if Legares stumbled?? Upgrade at weak positions such as SS and LF to offset Legares offense in CF was the much safer bet, no?

Expecting someone to take big run at #Rays Price today. Exec said, Wouldnt they have already? Yes, but wild things happen on final day.

Additionally if you look around the other FA that were out there, plenty of other teams did badly as well. Mike Morse was a very good bargain, but his OPS has dropped 200+ points since May and without a strong 2nd half he may prove to have just had a fluke start. Plus he was coming off injury plagued seasons. Abreu was really the only major miss, but then again Duda is proving to have been a worthy gamble.
I agree with this. I think the last two months of the season are big for Lagares. I think his bat is just barely good enough that he can start in CF for a good team but his numbers aren't going to look good if he doesn't finish the season strong.
That's why it was so important to get Lagares every day ABs so we can make this evaluation and have that data for next year. I wish we would do the same for Flores.
Expecting someone to take big run at #Rays Price today. Exec said, Wouldnt they have already? Yes, but wild things happen on final day.
I think Price get moved.
I kind of disagree Dan. I think Lagares has shown a lot of improvement at the plate that gives you hope he can continue improving. I think it's somewhat unlikely he'll ever be more than a 7th or 8th hitter, but at times he's shown patience and an ability to have some pretty good AB's. Plus he's gotten some clutch hits here and there.
Going into the season there was a distinct possibility he'd hit sub .250, never walk, and rival Tejada in slugging %. Just the fact that he was able to go through a pretty extended hot streak hitting over .300 shows a glimpse that there could be more there.
2013- 4.8% BB, 22.8% K rate, .110 ISO
2014- 4.3% BB, 22.2% K rate, .100 ISO
BABIP has been his friend (.310 last year, .354 this year). Statistically he's shown zero growth offensively from last year, which is what the concern is. "Is THIS his ceiling?" is a very valid question.
RT @alexspeier Trying to confirm, but hearing Lester and Gomes might be moving for Cespedes (Wow, if this ends up being the deal)
Lester traded for cespedes confirmed
RT @alexspeier Trying to confirm, but hearing Lester and Gomes might be moving for Cespedes (Wow, if this ends up being the deal)
Wow which way? Thought even a Lester rental would get more than that?
When I heard Josh Bell+ prospects I thought that was a good deal.
Cespesdes is a decent corner OFer.
Am I underestimating him?
No he is arb eligible. Contract expires after next year.
When I heard Josh Bell+ prospects I thought that was a good deal.

Cespades has the best arm in baseball.
he was arbitration eligible in 2015.
His arm is awesome, but I thought the Sox could have gotten more for Lester.
Who knows, maybe Fenway helps his offense.
and maybe the A's win a playoff series.
that's what I'm saying...Dan can you explain this? I mean they even had to send Millone down because of an excess of pitching.
I was just going from baseball reference - I'm sure you're right.
do the A's get draft pick compensation, if they offer Lester a QO and don't re-sign him?
Lester, Kazmir, Gray, Samardzija could be pretty nasty. I think Chavez is near the end of the line innings wise (probably headed to the pen, another nice find) Hammel has been a turd with them. I think basically he thinks this is the year to "go for it" and pitching the way to do it.
and if he goes back to the Red Sox? Yeah, this is a bad deal for them.
Why don't they get draft pick compensation, is that part of the new rules?
And because Cespedes is a FA (assuming you are right about that) too the Sox would not get draft pick compensation if they don't sign him either?
Home - .278/.344/.494
Road - .248/.293/.447
assuming the Mets will eat a chunk of salary, maybe he's a piece that can move.
I cannot stand Victorino from his Phillies days and consider him a baseball version of Vai Sikahema. I don't feel this way about many former players from rival teams, but I would not trade for Victorino.
Gotcha my mistake. Cespedes is a good defensive OF (arm is one of the best in the game, human highlight reel, occasionally inconsistent) and he could absolutely rake at Fenway as a right-handed hitter, but his OBP was .294 last year, .303 this year. People remember the Sportscenter Top 10 moments and ignore the fact that from game to game he hasn't been a top player since 2012.
Giolito will arguably be the #1 SP prospect in all of baseball in 2015...dont think Nationals would consider that deal straight up, especially within their own divison.
Yoenis Cespedis has 17 HR this season.
Red Sox outfielders COMBINED have 14 HR.
Quote:
on blogs of Nationals interested in Dan Murphy. Unlikely to happen, but my baseline would be Giolito+. What do you guys think?

That's what I would say the cost of Daniel Murphy would be. Obviously if the Nats wanted help in that position that badly and was willing to move him for Giolito, then sure. Flores or Herrera are behind Murphy. I don't want to trade Murphy but I would have to be overwhelmed.
Plus Bonifacio rakes vs. lefties.
Josh Willingham may be going back to Oakland. All we know is that Minnesota has received Tommy Milone.
Sources: #Astros very, very busy with calls on Cosart. Have taken Keuchel off the market.
Fuld goes to Oakland in Milone deal.
Nevermind, Oakland only got Sam Fuld. Nice trade by the Twins.
Would any Met fan trade Thor for Murphy? Of course not.
Source: Yankees looking for incremental upgrades, not big pieces. Monday much bigger day. They expect news on Masahiro Tanaka's progress.
Nevermind, Oakland only got Sam Fuld. Nice trade by the Twins.
Strange trade by the A's. Fuld was exposed to waivers and the Twins claimed him. And I guess the A's really didnt want to lose him and would have rather given up Milone for him. Fuld's 32 so maybe they see value him as a good pinch runner??
Lester
Gray
Kazmir
Hammel
Fuld is a guy who can play anywhere, a heady player, and who can come in late in games to pinch run or as a defensive replacement.

Source says Yankees working on small potential deals, but no big splashes expected today. Right field still seems to be the focus.

Probably the best rotation in the AL.
David Price trade talks intensifying and a deal is becoming likelier:
Boston, I think, also lucked out a few years ago when the Dodgers took whoever the Sox didn't want, freeing up a ton of payroll. If that trade doesn't go down, I think the Sox are in a very, very different position today.
If they have a chance at re-ssigning Lester, then I think their rotation can hold. If not, I expect them to be in on Scherzer, Failing that...I don't know. I really do thin gthat they can get by and be decent with only one established vet pitcher though. Problem is, without Lester, they have no ace.
To be fair "@Ken_Rosenthal and @Ken_Rosenthal_" are very similar looking accounts.
I'd kind of like them to make a small move or two so we can try to get the Captain into the postseason one more time, but whatever. The team needs new core players. Trading away youngsters is the opposite of what they should be doing now.
Jon Heyman @JonHeymanCBS 3m
Cards getting lackey
to some extent, the Cards are in the same boat as the Yankees - their fan base wants them to win every year and won't allow any sort of rebuilding or pass, even for one year...
again I don't equate the two teams or their farm systems but the situation is similar...
IF the Yankees have valuable contracts to trade (not sure) which will fill the system with prospects, then yeah, they could accelerate a golden age. Doesnt seem likely though.
The Sox also sending a miL pitcher.
I see the point about next year, but is it any better than Carp or Nava/Lackey?
Not if he wasn't going to play for $500K. It's not that much of a poison pill if he can just retire.
Jim Bowden. Lol.
So you think the fans are willing to spend hundreds of dollars to go to Y.S. to see the Yankees lose. What does it coast like at least 25 bucks just to park your car. Unfortunatley they have to feed the beast nad to do that they need to charge big bucks. I don't see where a family of 4 is going to pay like 500 bucks ( tickets/food/parking) for a losing team.
Kelly owns a promising 3.25 ERA in 266 career major league innings, but he's made half of his appearances in pitcher-friendly Busch Stadium and likely won't have as much luck on batted balls with the move to Fenway Park. The 26-year-old right-hander seems like a bullpen arm long term for Boston. He is under control through 2018.
Red Sox acquired OF Allen Craig and RHP Joe Kelly from the Cardinals for RHP John Lackey.
Craig had an outstanding .312/.364/.500 batting line in 328 games between 2011-2013, but he's looked like a completely different player in 2014 -- gimpy in the field and unable to hit the ball with authority at the plate. He'll presumably take over in left for the Red Sox, who will try to get him back on track. Craig, 30, is owed $5.5 million in 2015, $9 million in 2016, $11 million in 2017, and then has a $13 million team option for 2018.
Tigers and Red Sox "getting close" to deal for Andrew Miller, source says.
Quote:
give the fans enough credit when they say that the fans "won't allow" them to rebuild. 1995-2012 was a heck of a run but I think that even the most die-hard Yankee fans realize that the team needs to take a year or two to rebuild and get their contracts sorted out.

The Yankees have been bad for two seasons in a row now, and yet the stadium is still pretty full on most nights from what I've seen. The Steinbrenners have more money than they know what to do with at this point, and even if attendance (and profit) declines for a year or two, it's not going to hurt the franchise's viability whatsoever. As soon as they start winning again, the Steinbrenners can jack up the prices to even-more ridiculous levels and people will pay. It's a no-lose situation.
Source: 60% chance #Indians trade Asdrubal Cabrera today. #Mariners reportedly the sleeper team.

Minor League is slowly coming back, leave it alone please!
Been told #Rays are definitely moving Price
Guzman is on mets
so the Yanks just got younger
Well, if you dont know who he is, I like this trade.
I have asked #Yankees they are not close to Byrd. If anyone cares my twitter is @Joelsherman1. That was a fake account reporting it
Person in the know says Yanks haven't acquired Byrd.
Bryan Hoch @BryanHoch 2m
Yankees official says that there is no deal for Marlon Byrd.
In other news...
The Yankees have claimed Esmil Rogers off waivers from the Blue Jays.
"I think it may be the Tigers...maybe"
brilliant
in other news, The Mets may acquire Stanton....maybe.
The #Dbacks get OF Mitch Haniger and LHP Anthony Banda from #Brewers for Parra.
Indeed, it's very frustrating.
@jonmorosi
Gerardo Parra to Brewers.
Murphy on the Mets is available, but I suspect we wont move him. Might be one of those situations where we value him more than the teams looking at him. No rumors about what is being offered for him makes me think all talks are super low level.
Cincinnati isn't buying this season, and they may decide to sell -- perhaps even their ace. Reds general manager Walt Jocketty has seen the attractive packages front-line starters Jeff Samardzija and Jon Lester have garnered and may want in on the action. Latos has a 3.31 ERA in eight starts this year after missing the first two and a half months with injury.
Marlon Byrd has not been traded to the Yankees, according to Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr.

Pirates and Tigers in on Price per Rob Biertempfel
relief?
#Mariners get Denorfia from #Padres for Almonte and a minor-league pitcher.
The #Tigers are NOT getting LHP Andrew Miller according to @GordonEdes
With Lackey traded, Anthony Ranaudo will start for the Red Sox on Friday. It'll be his major-league debut.

At the rate Boston is trading starting pitching, Henry Owens may not be very far from that big league rotation

I think it's by design.

Cashman waits out the deadline to the very end. He dumpster dives and pulls out a cheap bat and a cheap pitcher.
He'll wait till the last minute when the sellers are most desperate and get two scrubs.

Am told Yankees could be making a late charge into the Price sweepstakes. Still seems unlikely unless NYY gives up multiple top prospects +.
Price to Yankees a long shot but was told Rays have, in recent weeks, scouted Yanks farm system pretty extensively.
Hearing no chance #Yankees get Price.
Hearing no chance #Yankees get Price.
Good. I'd rather hang onto the farm and just sign him as a FA in a year.
#Yankees announce claimed RHP Esmil Rogers off waivers from #Bluejays, unconditionally released INF Scott Sizemore
I read that so quickly.. therefore I hate you haha
Should have added the "ugh" with the I'm hungry tweet haha whoops
The #Mariners have always been pessimistic about signing Price to a long-term contract while the #Tigers know they could pull it off.
Expectation is the Rangers are going to stay put. An 11th-hour deal could come together, but nothing close with Alex Rios or anyone else.
Told Sox aren't done dealing. Busy day will continue to the wire.
Stephen Drew has been traded to the #Yankees, according to @Gordon Edes. Wow. #RedSox
I told all y'all the Red Sox would make a trade with the Yankees before they would with the Rays.
just an observation.
wow if true, that rotation is sick
David Price deal will "most likely" be 3 teams, source says.
I could see Porcello going back to the Rays.
They've got about 7 minutes if they do.
price goes to tigers in 3-way with seattle and tb
austin jackson and drew smyly in price deal
Amaro was busy today updating his resume. No time to make trades.
Yes it is, i assume some minor leaguers/prospects might be involved.
Mariners give up the best prospect in the deal with Walker & their the ones NOT getting Price?
Tampa got hosed
But The Mariners have to be getting more than this right? If Walker is in this trade
Yankees have acquired Prado from Arizona.
Peter O'Brien to #DBacks for Martin Prado. #Yankees
WTF another catcher?
Even then, JR Murphy is more that capable
Hearing Jake Marisnick is in the Cosart deal. #marlins #astros
Not really upset. In all likelyhood, he was the next Mitch Jones.
Well.....Arizona supposedly has been interested in Cervelli. If Dan's Hanigan post is legit, then that would seem likely.

Ok. I was kinda hoping that Refsnyder could give us that performance at 2B for less than 11 million per.
Both Refsnyder and Prado can play RF
Sure, but neither of them will hit enough for it to make sense next year.
It's funny. I've always looked at him as "Jay Buhner" and now the Yankees have traded him. I mostly wanted Refsnyder to get a chance at second and now he won't.

I don't "know" he won't. That's true. But Prado's best position is 2B, our OF is full and the only other spot is third, where he's not much of a bat.
It does look like this year he'll be playing RF and Drew will be playing second? A sub-600 OPS and a sub 700 OPS. Woo hoo!
Cashman says Rob Refsnyder will move back to second base full time in AAA. No more right field. Looking at him as a 2B option next year.

Just get the guy healthy for a change and I'll be happy. I suspect if hes throwing 65 pitches he'll be ready after two more starts at the latest if we need him.

Prado has struggled at Chase Field, batting .261 there and .279 on the road.

thanks Yat.
Don't listen to these clowns, your info is appreciated
In 13 and 14, RH batters hit home runs more frequently per AB in Yankee Stadium than any park but Toronto. http://rotogrinders.com/pages/Ballpark_Factors-49556
But it's not a big deal either way, considering Prado isn't what you'd call a power hitter
from SI.com:
The Yankees claimed right handed reliever Esmil Rogers off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays. Rogers is 0-0 in 19 games with a 6.97 ERA with the Blue Jays in 2014. Rogers isnt an improvement over what the Yankees have in their monstrous bullpen, but he is insurance in case of injuries or other unforeseen circumstances occur.
Rogers come in to the organization like Jeff Francis did. Meaning its a Eh You never know type of acquisition. More than likely Rogers will report to Triple-A Scranton Wilkes/Barre for some time and may find his way to the Bronx around September during roster expansion call-ups or if the organization decides it cant get any worse.
replaces Kelly Johnson
Interesting that prospects are being valued so highly by both buyers and sellers and there seemed to be a market inefficiency associated with that (like the Ray's seemingly selling Price low by overvaluing prospects).
They certainly were not going to get more over the winter
They could have waited until the offseason and gotten more. Fuck, they might have waited until next year's deadline and gotten more.
Now I can sit and read through all your opinions here - don't need the other thread for that.

I don't see Girardi mixing up the top with the way they've been hitting lately. I could see him keeping McCann at 6 but i'd like to see him at 8, so I'm going to say he'll bat 7. Prado has been mainly sitting at 5 or 6 in ARZ lineup.
BTW, I didn't realize til now that Drew has been hitting decently as of late. BA has jumped from .128 to .176 in three weeks.
