Lester being sought by Cards and Pirates with Dodgers still in the mix.

Ryan Ludwick is apparently on the block. Has an option for next year, at 36 would be a youth movement for the Yanks.

Ned Coletti says Matt Kemp will not be dealt.

The Phillies are apparently asking too much for just about everyone.

Kemp won't be dealt bc
cminetti5 : 7/31/2014 7:35 am : link
he has 3 home runs in the last 2 games. Plus they need that right hand bat in the OF. Everyone else is a lefty including Joc in the minors.
Kemp is in beast mode
Jints in Carolina : 7/31/2014 7:41 am : link
wouldn't they be smart to trade him while he is hot?
There isn't much buzz

And please god... no trading decent prospects for average guys like Willingham/Ludwick/someone similar. I hope they don't go for the home run move, but if you're gonna go for it then go for it. Don't do some half assed scrub shit.

Byrd must have some weird crystal ball thing going on, how in the world did he only have 4 teams to add to his no-trade and 2 of them end up being the most interested in his services this year?
MLB
Sammo284 : 7/31/2014 7:54 am : link
Has changed in terms of player movement. The value is in cost controlled young talent.

Plus teams are afraid to trade potential anymore.

Byrd negotiated a helluva deal with the Phillies!

Wonder if Alderson can giveaway CY to the Royals. They been looking for low level RH power bats with no luck. Trade CY to the Royals, pick up most of his salary. In return Mets get some IFA slot money. Essentially a risk free, $$ free RH power bat for the royals. Mets get another IFA. And Mets fans celebrate moving on from CY.
If there is any Major League ballplayer
Headhunter : 7/31/2014 8:11 am : link
with the exception of Dan Uggla who has less trade value that is currently on a Major League roster that has less trade value than CY? I'd like to know who that might be?
Shecky/HH
DanMetroMan : 7/31/2014 8:21 am : link
I actually thought Chris Young was a reasonable gamble (though the "promise" was ridiculous since he got fair market salary) but I don't think anyone would even want to tie up a roster spot on Chris Young at this point. If cut I think he ends up with a minor league deal with someone, he's that bad.
HH - with Uggla DFA'd
Shecky : 7/31/2014 8:23 am : link
Young is now the lowest :)
That's why mets pay his salary. Same as releasing him, get some small slot money in return = bag of balls. Continues to suck as a Royal, the cut him at a cost of zero.
Just trying to be creative. Something this FO hasn't been doing. Signing an IFA for $25k is literally a lottery ticket that most likely amounts to nothing for the Mets. The 1 in a 1,000 chance he is a back of the bullpen arm or 5th Of in 8 years? Why not try? And appease your fan base that you are so worried about??
Risk of signing Young
Shecky : 7/31/2014 8:27 am : link
I agreed at the time, I didn't mind the risk. What I'd did mind was the insisting on sticking with him as long as they did (aka the promis). If he isn't worth the roster spot to any other team in the league, what's that saying about our roster and decision making. Carrying a dozen OFs, two of which are CY and Abreu...
The
DanMetroMan : 7/31/2014 8:29 am : link
promise made no sense. He got 7.5 million, it's not like he signed a below market deal to join the Mets. Nobody was thinking "woah what a team friendly deal" when the Mets landed him.

wanted a guy who could play CF, the FO isn't/wasn't a believer in Lagares bat.
Marlins/Mets matchup?
Shecky : 7/31/2014 8:43 am : link
Marlins pretending to go after expensive pitchers, while likely targeting more realistic options. If we pick up some of a Colons salary, go after an excess OF of theirs in Marisnick.

I'd even consider Gee for Marisnick and Nicolino.
Not believing in Legares
Shecky : 7/31/2014 8:46 am : link
The thing that bothered me about the FO lack of faith in Legares was what they didn't have faith in. It was understandable to think he couldn't hit enough, but they weren't convinced about his defense. 2013 wasn't likely repeatable, understood - but he was clearly an elite defender.

Why sign CY for his CF capabilities (which we misjudged btw) and put your faith in CY in Cf and EY in left if Legares stumbled?? Upgrade at weak positions such as SS and LF to offset Legares offense in CF was the much safer bet, no?
Accidentally posted on other thread re CY
Shecky : 7/31/2014 9:03 am : link
Curious I checked to see how bad he was. Shocked to see 31 other players with over 200 ABs are worse than him. Including FfAs last year David Murphy, Hart, Choo and Beltran

CY has been brutal, no doubt, but the signing made sense
Eric on Li : 7/31/2014 9:23 am : link
Byrd would have been preferred, but counting the vesting option he's essentially got a deal 3x as big. All things equal, I doubt they'd have passed on Byrd, but they weren't looking to commit more than 1 year to a non-core type player and that I agree with. Plus as Dan mentioned CY could play CF, which was important because Lagares hadn't yet proven to be an every day CF (he still may not have definitively proven that either).

Additionally if you look around the other FA that were out there, plenty of other teams did badly as well. Mike Morse was a very good bargain, but his OPS has dropped 200+ points since May and without a strong 2nd half he may prove to have just had a fluke start. Plus he was coming off injury plagued seasons. Abreu was really the only major miss, but then again Duda is proving to have been a worthy gamble.
I
DanMetroMan : 7/31/2014 9:29 am : link
admittedly like Lagares but he's quietly "gotten away" with a pretty disappointing season for those of us who were hoping he might actually be more than "awesome glove with travel". His defense in CF might yet be enough for him to be a starter but THUS FAR in his career he looks more like a 7th-8th hitter who is a glove you carry vs. possibly "more" than that. Things can change but he's "disappointed" this season. Not being doom and gloom, lots of positives for the Mets and I still like Lagares just stating the facts.

I agree with this. I think the last two months of the season are big for Lagares. I think his bat is just barely good enough that he can start in CF for a good team but his numbers aren't going to look good if he doesn't finish the season strong.

That's why it was so important to get Lagares every day ABs so we can make this evaluation and have that data for next year. I wish we would do the same for Flores.

DanMetroMan : 7/31/2014 9:36 am : link
I like Lagares too. But as you said his glove might make it so the baseline for his hitting only needs to be so good.. but he needs to hit better or he's simply a very good CF who you "hide" in your lineup. Hopefully he hits a bit more going forward.
Are his numbers really that bad?
PA Giant Fan : 7/31/2014 9:41 am : link
Hitting 270, on pace for about 35 doubles. He needs to get on base more and he doesnt have real power obviously. Not sure what he is going to become...ANd he does seem to be pretty clutch

I kind of disagree Dan. I think Lagares has shown a lot of improvement at the plate that gives you hope he can continue improving. I think it's somewhat unlikely he'll ever be more than a 7th or 8th hitter, but at times he's shown patience and an ability to have some pretty good AB's. Plus he's gotten some clutch hits here and there.

Going into the season there was a distinct possibility he'd hit sub .250, never walk, and rival Tejada in slugging %. Just the fact that he was able to go through a pretty extended hot streak hitting over .300 shows a glimpse that there could be more there.
His
DanMetroMan : 7/31/2014 9:45 am : link
numbers are actually quite bad. Average MLB hitter (that includes C, SS, CF etc) has a wRC+ of 100, his is 95, his wOBA is .303, anything below .310 is considered "bad", .340 or above = "good"

improvement? 4.3% walk rate, 22.2% K rate. Remember his numbers are boosted by a .354 BABIP. Predictably, his defense has been worth far less than last year (everyone wanted to believe his HISTORIC 2013 defensive numbers were repeatable, they weren't)
Wow...

Lagares

2013- 4.8% BB, 22.8% K rate, .110 ISO
2014- 4.3% BB, 22.2% K rate, .100 ISO

BABIP has been his friend (.310 last year, .354 this year). Statistically he's shown zero growth offensively from last year, which is what the concern is. "Is THIS his ceiling?" is a very valid question.

with better AB's. Obviously a lot of those came during his hot streak, but it does give promise that there may be upside there if he can continue to make adjustments and take steps forward. If he doesn't he still seems like he'll be able to have a much more dangerous bat than Tejada while giving you very good defense.
