Lester being sought by Cards and Pirates with Dodgers still in the mix.

Ryan Ludwick is apparently on the block. Has an option for next year, at 36 would be a youth movement for the Yanks.

Ned Coletti says Matt Kemp will not be dealt.

The Phillies are apparently asking too much for just about everyone.

Cespedes?
The 12th Man : 7/31/2014 9:56 am : link
Why? This makes no sense for the A's. You have him signed basically until 2018 as he is arbitration eligible in 2016 and FA not until 2018. You are going to lose Lester in the winter. I say no way to this.

No he is arb eligible. Contract expires after next year.

not that impressed by Cespedes I guess.

When I heard Josh Bell+ prospects I thought that was a good deal.

Cespesdes is a decent corner OFer.

Am I underestimating him?

Cespades has the best arm in baseball.
and..
feelflows : 7/31/2014 9:57 am : link
Boston also getting a competitive balance draft pick from Oakland. Boston will send cash to the A's.
The simple answer is that Cespedes is overrated...
Dunedin81 : 7/31/2014 9:57 am : link
a good defensive OF who hits HRs (he'll hit a lot more as a right-handed power bat at Fenway) but is still OPSing under .800.
PJ
DanMetroMan : 7/31/2014 9:57 am : link
you are underrating him. OPS+ of 114, 2.3 WAR in 100 games this year. He's an above average regular without a big contract. 30th in wRC+ among OF, 36th in wOBA
Dunedin
DanMetroMan : 7/31/2014 9:59 am : link
that isn't correct. Katz put in a clause he can't be offered arbitration. He's a FA after 2015.
let's see how Cespedes

hits in Fenway compared to Oakland...
I do not like this deal for the

Wow...
Dunedin81 : 7/31/2014 10:00 am : link
I still like the deal for Boston because their lineup next year looked like shit (truth be told they may be a better team now than pre-trade).
This is how the A's work
pjcas18 : 7/31/2014 10:00 am : link
Cespedes was the highest paid A's player.

he was arbitration eligible in 2015.

His arm is awesome, but I thought the Sox could have gotten more for Lester.

Who knows, maybe Fenway helps his offense.

and maybe the A's win a playoff series.
wow they did trade Cespedes

Again
DanMetroMan : 7/31/2014 10:02 am : link
he's not arbitration eligible. He is a FA following next season. Boston must feel they can lock him up to a team friendly deal.

that's what I'm saying...Dan can you explain this? I mean they even had to send Millone down because of an excess of pitching.
In the Oakland offices after the trade was done...

I was just going from baseball reference - I'm sure you're right.

do the A's get draft pick compensation, if they offer Lester a QO and don't re-sign him?
Beane
DanMetroMan : 7/31/2014 10:06 am : link
obviously is looking at this as a short series pitchers change everything.

Lester, Kazmir, Gray, Samardzija could be pretty nasty. I think Chavez is near the end of the line innings wise (probably headed to the pen, another nice find) Hammel has been a turd with them. I think basically he thinks this is the year to "go for it" and pitching the way to do it.
A's
DanMetroMan : 7/31/2014 10:06 am : link
get absolutely nothing if Lester walks (which I assume he will). So this is quite the gamble.
Heh, now watch Beane grab Rusney Castillo
BeerFridge : 7/31/2014 10:07 am : link

right
feelflows : 7/31/2014 10:07 am : link
pitchers park + home field advantage throughout the playoffs = get more pitching

and if he goes back to the Red Sox? Yeah, this is a bad deal for them.

Why don't they get draft pick compensation, is that part of the new rules?
Cespedes
Buck Dharma : 7/31/2014 10:08 am : link
is an extreme fly ball hitter and is also a pull hitter, he should mash at Fenway.
Yeah
DanMetroMan : 7/31/2014 10:09 am : link
the new rules are that players traded in-season are not eligible for QO/pick compensation. So unless the A's win the WS this trade wasn't a good one. I'm a huge Beane fan and props for going for it I guess, but it's a MAJOR gamble.
Just said on MLB channel
The 12th Man : 7/31/2014 10:11 am : link
Cespedes contract states that at the end of 2015 if he is not signed to another contract by 5 days after the season he will be released. Hence 1 yr and half to get him signed. No Arbritration due to the clause in his contract.

And because Cespedes is a FA (assuming you are right about that) too the Sox would not get draft pick compensation if they don't sign him either?
Cespedes
DanMetroMan : 7/31/2014 10:14 am : link
is a FA after the 2015 season, he's not arbitration eligible after this season, he has a set salary. The Sox have 1.5 years to get him locked him or he hits the market.
Lagares
Deej : 7/31/2014 10:14 am : link
Doesnt he lead the team in WAR (BR) by more than half a run? Crap on his offense all you want (and he's substandard even for a CF), but his defense is fantastic and game changing. It's not last years' D -- that was plainly unrepeatable as he was on pace for like top 10 alltime defensive WAR. But he's still been very good in center. And that will matter more if we put a proper all-hit LF in the lineup.

to Bay Area radio they are now all of a sudden talking about how Cespedes is an average hitter and on the play were he thru out the Angels that intialy he miss played the ball. I fu8kin hope the Angels win the division and the A's lose in the first round.

Saw this morning on Adam Rubin's blog that the Mets had a chance to add an 'intriguing outfielder' - what are your thoughts on the Mets trading for Shane Victorino - he's got 1 year left on his deal and could be a good leadoff hitter next year before Nimmo/Conforto is ready in 2016. Boston seems to be selling assets, could be a good buy
I'd
DanMetroMan : 7/31/2014 10:17 am : link
take Victorino on the cheap but he may yet be in decline/always injured mode. My guess is the OF Rubin was talking about was Rios.
Since people are suggesting Oakland hurt Cespedes' numbers

selfish Mets fan talking...
feelflows : 7/31/2014 10:19 am : link
I wonder how this affects the market for Colon.

assuming the Mets will eat a chunk of salary, maybe he's a piece that can move.
Nats
DanMetroMan : 7/31/2014 10:21 am : link
aren't giving up Giolito let alone Giolito+ for 1.5 year of Daniel Murphy at around 15 million. They will find someone cheaper if that's the cost.
Victorino
pjcas18 : 7/31/2014 10:21 am : link
is routinely trashed here in Boston. he was fine last year (maybe even better than fine(, but they say this year he shows no desire to even be on the field, he's often injured and when not injured not interested.

I cannot stand Victorino from his Phillies days and consider him a baseball version of Vai Sikahema. I don't feel this way about many former players from rival teams, but I would not trade for Victorino.
ssh..
feelflows : 7/31/2014 10:21 am : link
I'm not sure how replacing one of your best hitters with another pitcher helps in the long-run.. unless they are stockpiling pitchers for a trade.

Gotcha my mistake. Cespedes is a good defensive OF (arm is one of the best in the game, human highlight reel, occasionally inconsistent) and he could absolutely rake at Fenway as a right-handed hitter, but his OBP was .294 last year, .303 this year. People remember the Sportscenter Top 10 moments and ignore the fact that from game to game he hasn't been a top player since 2012.
Dunedin
DanMetroMan : 7/31/2014 10:25 am : link
he's a good regular, he's not a superstar (or hasn't been one). He's overrated by his highlights but also underrated in that he's a good, above average starting OF. Some guys are both over/underrated. He's one.
The arm makes up for a lot in the field
Greg from LI : 7/31/2014 10:25 am : link
Because, without the arm, he'd be a below-average defensive OF.

Giolito will arguably be the #1 SP prospect in all of baseball in 2015...dont think Nationals would consider that deal straight up, especially within their own divison.
Wow I didn't realize how bad it became

Yoenis Cespedis has 17 HR this season.

Red Sox outfielders COMBINED have 14 HR.

I think it's a pretty good deal for both sides...
Dunedin81 : 7/31/2014 10:33 am : link
I certainly understand why Beane pulled the trigger, but Cherington did a good job of getting help for next year instead of just another prospect. They have a lot of them in their system, adding even another Top 50 guy isn't likely to give them offense next year when the only veterans of consequence are a fading Pedroia and an, umm, enhanced 38 year old power hitter who can't hold on forever.

That's what I would say the cost of Daniel Murphy would be. Obviously if the Nats wanted help in that position that badly and was willing to move him for Giolito, then sure. Flores or Herrera are behind Murphy. I don't want to trade Murphy but I would have to be overwhelmed.
Daniel Murphy doesn't make 15mm does he?

DanMetroMan : 7/31/2014 10:46 am : link
he's making 6, next year likely 8+ via arbitration. So he's not cheap + Giolito is unrealistic even if he were.
Sadly
DanMetroMan : 7/31/2014 10:46 am : link
guys like Murphy don't bring back a huge return. A solid one? for sure but not when guys like Cabrera, Bonifacio etc are out there.
Is Rios...
Italianju : 7/31/2014 10:50 am : link
a FA after the year? I really like the idea of improving the current team, but only if its at least a guy who we can pencil in next year. No reason to trade any prospects for a rental. That said im so sick of the revolving door of crap in LF.
