Longer extra points in Hall of Fame game

Pete from Woodstock : 7/31/2014 10:10 am
Starting with Sunday night’s Hall of Fame Game and through the second week of the preseason, teams will line up at the 15-yard line when kicking extra points. (Two-point conversion attempts will remain at the 2-yard line, and extra points will move back to the 2 for the third week of the preseason and throughout the regular season.)

I think the 25 yard line
armsteadeatslittlekids : 7/31/2014 10:15 am : link
would make it more beneficial over the course of a game/season to go for 2 every time. 15 might do the same.
personally I'm against

The two different spots.

There has to be a better way to make it more challenging

Narrow the goal posts?
Spot the ball out wider (perhaps based on where the TD was scored ala rugby)

how can you have two different spots?
asbasb : 7/31/2014 10:18 am : link
What if a team wants to fake a PAT and rush or roll, etc?

How about making the PAT a live ball so if blocked it can be returned by the defense?
How about eliminating it
Deej : 7/31/2014 10:37 am : link
You get a free PAT, or you can go for two and risk that point?

Sports are about the unexpected and the spectacular. The PAT is the antithesis of that.
Just Eliminate The One Point Extra Point Kick
Trainmaster : 7/31/2014 11:32 am : link
Get rid of a boring, nearly automatic play for an exciting play.

Aren't the success rates for the PAT kicks > 99% and slightly less than 50% for 2 point conversions? Therefore, on average, scoring will be about the same (i.e. if a team scores 4 touchdowns, they'll get 24 points from the TDs and 4 points from 2 successful 2 pt conversions versus 24 points from 4 touchdowns and 4 points from 4 successful (boring) PAT kicks).

Don't change the value of the touchdown (keep it at 6 pts)
Don't move the placement of the PAT kick (eliminate it instead)

I like this idea - no more 1 point PAT, teams have to go for 2 every time. Would create a myriad of exciting plays and different options during games
Just leave it

The way it is. The game is fine with it as is.

I don't see how this rule would prevent a team from faking it, but it seems awfully unlikely a team would pass on the opportunity to go for 2 from the 2 yard line, and then choose to fake it and go for it from the 15.
my problem
PaulBlakeTSU : 7/31/2014 12:50 pm : link
with making the PAT harder is that it ruins the excitement of the game if a team is down by 7 and marches down the field for a big touchdown. Do you really want it to then be offset by having to make a 32 yard PAT? That basically makes it a field goal try to tie the game. The touchdown should be the highlight and focal point-- not the kick afterwards.

I would make it a free point unless a team wants to risk it to try for 2.
So ridiculous

Fixing something that doesnt need to be fixed at all.

This. If they HAVE TO make a change.
The extra point
WideRight : 7/31/2014 1:17 pm : link
as a difference maker is lacking. Teams bust it for 60 minutes, come out even except for one pencil neck's missed PAT, and they lose?

Changes should deemphasize the value of special teams
it should be changed
Les in TO : 7/31/2014 2:55 pm : link
the XP is a useless play that gets converted 99% of the time. it should either be more difficult through a longer kick or eliminated in favour of the 2 point conversion. both reward skill and generate some excitement.
I say do away with it
armsteadeatslittlekids : 7/31/2014 3:07 pm : link
or leave it alone.
How about after the TD,
Curtis in VA : 7/31/2014 3:11 pm : link
each teams Place Kicker must square off in a bare knuckle fight until one gets knocked unconscious. The winner automatically scores an extra point for their team.

Janikowski is in vigorous agreement with this proposal.
Simple way to make the kicking game harder:
81_Great_Dane : 7/31/2014 4:21 pm : link
Put a crossbar across the top of the goalposts. Ball has to go through the box. This wouldn't affect play from scrimmage at all. On extra points, that would probably mean kicking with a somewhat lower trajectory, and there'd be more blocks.

Second simple way to make the kicking game harder, which sould affect play from scrimmage: Move the hashmarks back to where they used to be, farther outside. That would make some short kicks -- like extra points -- harder. Personally, I think more variation and more difficulty is more fun, so I like it when there's a short side and a wide side, and when there's an unbalanced line. Coaches will hate it because it would make them account for more situations.

The conversion should not be an opportunity for the defense to score. It's a reward for the TD. The college rule sucks.

I would discourage taking the knee at the end of they game by stopping the clock when they take a knee. Make the teams run plays to run out the clock.

I don't understand this sentiment. The losing team has had an entire game to not be down with less than 2 minutes to play in the game. Why dream up a rule outside the bounds of the game to benefit the losers?

And how would you police "real" plays? A quarterback is a runner and a sneak is a real play. Would watching 3 quarterback sneaks be that much more enjoyable than kneel downs?
silly idea

as they are.

Do away with regular season OT. Bring back the tie.

Behind by 7 and score a TD with seconds remaining? Now the coach has to decide to go for the win or the tie.
