Thanks!!!

Is that it wasn't one book - it was Bruce Catton's Civil War trilogy:
Mr. Lincoln's Army, Glory Road,
and
A Stillness at Appomattox.
He won a Pulitzer for the last book.

was about two different sets of Catton trilogies. The original discussion centered on:
Coming Fury (1961)
Terrible Swift Sword (1963)
Never Call Retreat (1965)
Army of the Potomac trilogy was also discussed:
Mr. Lincoln's Army (1951)
Glory Road (1952)
A Stillness at Appomattox (1953)

Do you prefer Foote or McPherson?

I prefer Catton...I'm also a big fan of Sears.
Loved Foote, but man those books took forever to get through...was sad when it was over however.
McPhearson is really good, but he doesn't go in-depth like Catton and Foote.
thank you

Agreed. McPherson is a great historian and a fascinating read, but is not the in-depth story teller that Catton or Foote is.
I usually recommend McPherson to people looking to get into studying the Civil War and then move onto Foote and Catton.

should be in the conversation here too. If you've never read his books you are missing some good reading, as well.
