Asked if anyone on offense is impressing him, Antrel Rolle tells @ESPNNY98_7FM: "I'm liking Larry Donnell right now. I'm loving him." #NYG
Like he's going to be the starting TE come Sept, but there are still 5 preseason games between now and then, and that's a lot of football.None of them really seem better than the other, but he does seem to want it more. All it takes to know Robinson isn't going to be the guy is just to watch an interview with him. Still, mebbe he can be a decent blocker...
let's focus on Reese and Adrien Robinson failure to grab the spot
Don't get me wrong. I won't look at the glass half full. Having Anyone step up from our abysmal TE group is a plus..
But let's see. We have a TE in Adrien Robinson, a 4th round pick in 2012, hyped by our GM as the next JPP of tight ends.
Then you have Larry Donnell, an undrafted player from that same year. Who (as of now) is clearly making a run for the starting spot.
Yet, you want to dismiss Reese's long run of failures, in the draft? The same failures that didn't help or season in 2013? Sorry HH, it absolutely should be a focal point.
Reese is equally responsible for bringing in Donnell as he is
comes in and apparently flashes and this reflects negatively on Reese who signed him.He might turn out better than a touted draft pick. Happens every year in the NFL
Isn't this offense running allot of 2 tight end sets?
Maybe both of them can be productive but if Donnell steps up to be the man then so be it. End the Robinson project next year and maybe get am upper tier player. Probably just wishful thinking on my part. For now though I don't give a rats but who steps up as long as someone does
RE: Reese is equally responsible for bringing in Donnell as he is
I was thinking the same thing as I wrote that. So let's give credit where credit is due. But to luck out on undrafted players, more so say, than the players that should help your team in the higher rounds, is not how you build a championship team. So yeah, he's been in a funk.

But... like, if a player drafted in round 4 by a GM is then surpassed by an undrafted free agent signed by the same GM, could that then in turn be considered to be a good rookie free agent signing? Or are we going to apply the same logic and say Reese blew his draft pick on Hakeen Nicks because Victor Cruz turned out to be the better player?
It's not great, but it's not bad. Unfortunately for him, Larry Donnell is having a really good camp (and so is Daniel Fells. Go figure).
So, "the JPP of Tight Ends" aside, if this late 4th round pick who was a project from the get-go, and who's been bitten more than once by the injury bug, never amounts to anything more than your second or third TE, is that really such a bad reflection on Jerry Reese?

And he also has had a lot of success in the draft as well, so let's not revise history
Prepare for a bad season

We took care of two big needs early but created two more with Tuck and Linval Joseph departing. The departures/declines of Corey Webster, Terrell Thomas, Aaron Ross, Brandon Myers, David Baas, Hakeem Nicks, Justin Tuck, Linval Joseph, David Diehl, Chris Snee, Will Beatty is simply too much. We were 7-9 with those folks, now all are gone or on the verge of it in Snee and Beatty's cases.
We have no TE
We have ONE proven WR
We have no KR/PR
We have no center
We have ONE tackle
We have ONE guard
We have ONE DE worth anything
We have no depth now at DT
I do remember him talking up Donnell in several posts prior to camp beginning. I'm sure some intrepid soul can find those posts if they search hard enough.
can still apologize and defend Reese's performance as GM these past 5 years amazes me. We have gone steadily downhill because of his inability to to replace players in the draft and FA as the players who won us two SBs retired or lost thier skills.
The Giants are 65-47 in the regular season, with two Super Bowl championships. Along the way he's made some missteps, but on balance I'd say he's done a pretty good job, so I'm not ready to run him out of town just yet. I'm looking forward to seeing him return the Giants to glory.
for Reese? What color is the sky in your world? The world of Madden where no one makes mistakes and all you need to do is click a button and problem fixed. In the real world if Reese was on the market with his resume, he would have multiple offers to choose from.
Since Newsome took over in November 2002, the Ravens are 108-74 (.593) in the regular season, 9-6 (.600) in the post-season, 1-2 in AFC Championship Games and 1-0 in the Super Bowl. In his worst season, the Ravens lost nine straight games and finished 5-11. His next-worst record was 6-10, after a 2-7 start. Newsome inherited the roster he had helped build, a 4-6 team that had reached the playoffs the previous two years, winning the Super Bowl in January 2001. The Ravens had possibly the best MLB and LOT of all time, in their prime, but they also had a mess at QB that took years to fix.
Since Reese took over in 2007, the Giants are 65-47 (.580) in the regular season, 8-1 (.889) in the playoffs, 2-0 in NFC Championship Games and 2-0 in the Super Bowl. In his worst season, the Giants lost six straight games and finished 7-9. His next-worst record was 8-8, after a 5-0 start. Reese inherited the roster he had helped build, an 8-8 team coming off two weak, one-and-done playoff appearances. The offensive star had just retired. The defensive leader was 35 and entering his final year. Reese also inherited a maligned, streaky QB and a #1 receiver who was one year away from shooting himself.
Looks like a tie to me. The Ravens have been a bit more consistent in the regular season, but all it has earned them is a few extra, short-lived trips to the playoffs. That's worth something (you've got to be in it to win it), but it's not the difference between the NFL Executive of the Century and a bum. Both GMs had a rough 2013. Every team has ups and downs. Let's see how they bounce back.
As for Donnell and Robinson, I'm with those who say the important thing is that you get good players and manage the cap well. If Donnell thrives and Robinson doesn't, that's the same to me as if it were the other way around. Actually, it's better, because Donnell having spent 2012 on the practice squad means the giants control his rights for an extra year.
if Donnell's last name was "Bonnell". Then we could have another unheralded B-name TE developing into a productive starter. I think the D is holding him back.
Of our TEs, Donnell is the best that's not saying in regards to the NFL he's anywhere near the top. He's probably a bottom 10 starter but out of this crew he's the best one we have.
I mentioned him in a few game reviews last year and a few times prior to camp and during. He's got athleticism that shows up, he needs polish but he's got size, solid speed and hands. He just looks like a gifted athlete with coordination, talent and balance. If he can put it together we may have something but he's still very raw.

So wtf do you propose? Mars should fire Reese? I guess we should dismiss all of the great mid round draft picks that essentially came under Reese's watch? Tuck, Jacobs, cofield, boss, manningham, guys like Mosley and Jernigan who may show nfl chops this year... Nope let's focus on a few mid round picks that may not develop. Never mind the facts that every single gm misses countless mid draft picks year after year. Reese missed some over the last few years, some of which haven't even failed this year yet...
Move on dude. So he missed on some picks. That's life in the NFL. Reese is a good football mind. We are lucky to have him as GM. Sorry if you can't see that.
I don't care who plays TE, just outperform B. Myers. Shouldn't be a tall task.
Why?

Crap, I should have known my point would have been so obvious as to already have been raised.
But I am even more in awe of Canton's knowledge of "how championship teams are built."
Boss, Ballard and Donnell???
Nope, but now I will always associate the word "BlackLight" with the word "Doofus."
I'm not surprised he's doing well. Hope he's our Julius Thomas
Jeremy Shockey, is that you?

What everyone heard was, "He's going to be an immediate star".

Larry Donnell takes early lead in TE competition - ( New Window )
Sounds to me that they are calling out Robinson loud and clear to step up or step out.
Just in case he didn't see his name last on the "unofficial" depth chart sent out last week...
Easily the best post of the day...
He said we have no TE.
