NFT: Cape Cod dining recommendations

aimrocky : 7/31/2014 4:29 pm
Up in the Cape for a few days in the Orleans area. I've never been on the Cape, so I'm looking for dining recommendations. We have an 18 month old, so we're not looking to go real fancy. Looking for good, local eats, where if she screams we won't get dirty looks.

Prefer seafood, but any style works. Thanks.
I'd recommend Land Ho in Orleans

family friendly, good food, been going there for more than 30 years
I haven't been there for a while but remember that there are many

good places to eat from very casual to fine dining. Names escape me, but one very good Italian, one very casual Lobster place too, shaped like a barn. Good value, fun if you have little kids.
I'll second Land Ho

there's Captain Parkers Pub (best chowder on the cape), which is in Yarmouth, I think?

The pizza place in Harwichport isn't bad, its right on Rt. 28 called Ember. You can also sit outside with a firepit.

My favorite place is The Skipper, which is on South Shore Drive in South Yarmouth. Good simple food, strong drinks and has a 2nd floor deck that overlooks the beach. Great place.
We ate at the Orleans Inn

very old school but the meal and the bar outlooking on to the water was great.

don't think you can go wrong with JT's or Cobie's in neighboring Brewster, the Beachcomber or Arnold's in Eastham/Wellfleet (next towns over towards Portsmouth). Lobster Hut in Orleans is ok...Hole in One in Orleans is OUTSTANDING for breakfast.
If you can, visit

the Sundae School for some great ice cream.
Been awhile since I've been to the Cape

but, Captain Williams House was a really good place.
The beachcomber

would be good for drinks and they have excellent fried seafood (who doesn't on the cape?). Good chowder too.

awesome views up high on the dunes looking out at the ocean.

Many times you can see pods (?) of seals from the bar area pretty close to shore.

One of my favorite places on the cape (be careful if you go in the water though, almost always a strong riptide).

Directly in Orleans i've only eaten at Land Ho, no complaints, quality food, but not special for the Cape.

the Brazilian Grill Churrascaria in Hyannis

really tasty skewered meats sliced table side with an top notch buffet to compliment it. The dessert cart is solid as well.
If you're going to drive

all the way to Hyannis, I like the Black Cat Tavern, better than the more popular Spanky's but both are good. Hyannis might be far from Orleans - 30 min maybe 45 with traffic, though maybe you want to check out more of the cape

I haven't tried Torrag's recommendation, but I've always wanted to, just can't eat anything other than seafood when I'm on the cape.

Land Ho

is great. The captain of a charter boat recommended it to us. One of the better standard food places I've been to.

Brewster Fish House. Hands down the best on the Cape. Get there before 5 if you want to get a table.

The Riverway in Yarmouth. This is actually my favorite place. Great atmosphere, big portions, unique recipes, great bar and I have been going here for over 30 years (first time when I was 5 years old with my parents)

Arnold's in Welfleet. Best fried clams and Lobster Rolls bar none.

Baxters in Hyannis

Wicked expensive but pretty good fried food and I've been eating there forever. I like watching the boats on the deck. Fun with the kids after the pirate boat. Very casual. JFK ate there.

The Brazilian meat place in Hyannis I've been two twice. Earlier this summer we were there and it wasn't great like it was a couple years ago.
Thanks for the help!

Grumpys on 6A in Brewster is a great breakfast place. I will 2nd Brewster Fish House, but probably not great for 18 month old. There is also the Sesuit Harbor Cafe in Dennis that overlooks the harbor that has great Cape Seafood and is ultra casual.
