Why did they release Brandon Myers?

blakjedi : 7/31/2014 6:39 pm
Wouldn't he have been a perfect fit for this semi west coast offense? Why judge Brandon negatively because he was brought into an offense that didn't fit his skill set?

I lack a lot of knowledge on this topic but it crossed mind reading the Larry Donnell thread.
Thread of the year.

Hands down, can't top it.
Any professional offense doesn't fit his skill set

He couldn't block
mrvax : 7/31/2014 6:42 pm : link
at all, had trouble holding onto passes. Just little stuff like that.
Well I didn't know you wanted to get in on the discussion Mr Helper...

i thought he was highly valued

In Oakland. Believe me he pissed me off more than anyone but Eli last year. But I thought his failure was more scheme related.
It was scheme related.
BlueLou : 7/31/2014 6:55 pm : link
If by "scheme" you mean NFL.
His contract, while on it's face 4 years,
MOOPS : 7/31/2014 6:55 pm : link
was essentially a one year deal with 3 additional voidable years at $4M per.
He didn't show he was worth anything close to that. Adios.
I think he came 1 year too early.
AnishPatel : 7/31/2014 6:58 pm : link
I wonder how he would do in this system coming off the numbers he put up in Oakland. I would to think he could compete with this TE corps now.
I understand the question
81_Great_Dane : 7/31/2014 7:00 pm : link
but Myers isn't the kind of guy you keep coming off a disastrous season. You keep Myers if you just went 11-5, or had a great playoff run, and he was a useful role player. (That's what kept Bear Pascoe on the team for years.) If you had a losing record and missed the playoffs, he's the kind of guy you jettison in favor of younger, cheaper guys with more upside.

Yes, Brandon Myers might have been a little more productive in McAdoo's offense than Larry Donnell or the other guys they brought in. But that's not a sure thing, and he wasn't cheap. Besides which, he was unreliable last year. He's gotta go.
Myers was useless.
arcarsenal : 7/31/2014 7:02 pm : link
I haven't hated a FA signing as much as that guy in a while. Good fucking riddance. That ball that went off his hands in Chicago summed his time up here perfectly.
In one of his retirement interviews IIRC
Bobby Epps : 7/31/2014 7:11 pm : link
Gilbride said that Myers could not separate from LBs or DBs but had to find a hole in the zone, sit there and wait for Eli to find him.

I guess the fact that he wasn't a good blocker didn't help either.
There isn't a single thing Myers does well.
Exit 172 : 7/31/2014 7:18 pm : link
He's terrible at everything. He couldn't even run for the open end zone without tripping over his feet.

He's in CC Brown and Will Demps territory for me.

When finding that extra gear

means tripping on one stuck into the turf.

Any year would have been too early.
Riggies : 7/31/2014 8:01 pm : link
He tried, put out effort, but he's good for nothing except catching passes short of the first down marker in garbage time against prevent defenses. Basically, he was a great fit for the Raiders teams he was on.

Even riding with the TE group they have now should be an improvement over him and it's not likely any one of them is going to be all that special either.
He racked up stats
Tim in Eternal Blue : 7/31/2014 8:04 pm : link
In Oakland, because they had zero offensive threats and played from behind.
he
Les in TO : 7/31/2014 8:05 pm : link
got a good chunk of his catches in oakland in garbage time on checkdowns in zone d's....he was not fast or quick, inconsistent catching and a substandard blocker....he's like bear pascoe with slightly more athleticism and worse run blocking skills

My favorite was Louis Murphy Jr

or Barret Green
To be fair

Myers did help put to rest the argument that TE's were interchangable with Eli. Because he certainly proved that Eli can't make ANY Tight End productive.

Actually, to be fair, the OL is really to blame for eli having a bad year. There is no way eli plays that bad if he has 4 seconds to throw like brady or have the 49ers OL. as per the clip above, myers is not use to doing anything with the ball in his hands. he can just catch. that is it. the greatest thing he has ever done on the giants was the play against dallas where he caught a pass at the 8yrd line and no DB touched him and he showed awareness and ran in. his lack of YAC does not fit this offense. he cost about 3 million more than any other TE we have, that is why he is gone. Give eli time, he will make a cruz, boss, ballard, smith, manningham, nicks…shit, even derek hagan looked like a solid wr with eli.

I rarely have disliked a free agent acquisition

as much as I disliked the Myers acquisition. Now nobody can perform as poorly as CC Brown did at safety for the Giants but Myers was among the worst free agent signings by this team in some time. He was a terrible blocker and almost all of his receptions came late in games when the Giants trailed by multiple scores.

he actually put a hell of a move on the LB. Caused him to fall down, the break was so sharp

and the simple fact is, despite his limitations, which are many, Myers is a much better route runner and pass catcher than any TE on the roster

I'm also in the camp of resigning CC Brown, wherever he may be
Because he sucked, plain and simple.

I clearly remember Oakland fans saying similar, how a good chunk of his yards came in garbage time when the team was down.

It's ALWAYS garbage time in Oakland.

My fantasy team supports this. It was amazing the numbers he was putting up for a five week stretch. It just so happened to be in non-competitive games.
Several issues re: Myers
bc4life : 8/1/2014 11:12 am : link
Bad blocker, improved as year went on but still not dependable.

Not a big target and not athletic enough to cause mismatch problems. Simply put - not hard to cover.

Decent hands and put forth the effort and improved while here, but never came close to overcoming the first two issues I mentioned.
Yes he was awful at blocking.
Jimmy Googs : 8/1/2014 11:25 am : link
I would say we could have lived with his sporadic receiving production and falling down all the time IF he was better at blocking...

but he sucked.

Who has been the best blocker amongst our all-pro Tight Ends in camp so far...anybody?

The only guy I've heard any good news about is Donnell.
Sunday night it will be something to watch for.
It's nothing new the news on him
mattlawson : 8/1/2014 1:05 pm : link
I remember specifically Donnell being cited as the best all-around TE on the team last year too.
agree with bc
JonC : 8/1/2014 3:24 pm : link
Those performance blips and the contract structure as MOOPS said were the key factors in moving forward.
it was a one year deal
fkap : 8/1/2014 4:45 pm : link
with two year implications. He's costing the Giants 1 and a quarter mil against this year's cap.

Considering that no one was bidding for his services, and almost everyone thought he was 'over rated' (hard to do when no one rates you as anything), it has to rank amongst the most fucked up deals I've seen recently. I know they did it because we were so tight against the cap last year, but in what world does Myers deserve 2 mil for one year, with it being almost guaranteed (outside him proving to be the greatest thing since sliced bread) that the contract was going to be voided?
