NFT: Why are my download speeds terrible in kitchen

MookGiants : 7/31/2014 7:32 pm
I have an airport time capsule router so its not a cheap router. It's downstairs in a split level house. So not a huge house and i figured it would be fine down there, remodeled house recently and moved the internet stuff downstairs. In my living room right next to my kitchen my speeds are very good, around 100 download. Downstairs they are about 120.

If i walk 10 feet from my living room to kitchen, my speeds get destroyed. I'm lucky to get 2-3 download speeds in my kitchen. I'm puzzled as to why this is. I know when the microwave is being used it impacts it but this is even with it off.

I'm at a loss why this happens. The rest of the house is fine, even points further away from the router than the kitchen is.
Maybe you forgot to turn off the oven

Are the kitchen and router separated by a load bearing wall?

Or perhaps a wet wall with copper pipes?

the kitchen is separated by a load bearing wall. The kitchen is partially open on the one side that doesnt have load bearing wall, a big cutout to open it up.

Should I just get an airport express to fix the issue in the kitchen? I like to sit in my kitchen and watch the tv in there sometimes
Try moving your router upstairs

The higher the better (as long as we're talking a 2-3 story house). The kitchen walls may have something blocking your signal. You could also move the router to the basement.

The key is to keep the router as centered as possible, so that the whole house gets coverage.
I'll

probably just buy the airport express and put it upstairs in a place where the signal is really really good so the kitchen can work off of that.

Is there any real negative to using an extender like an airport express? I dont want to put the router upstairs as I had it there but moved it because in the remodel I put in hardwood floors and didnt want them drilling any holes in the hardwood for the cable to come through like it used to with the carpet, so I moved it downstairs and want to keep it there.
Are you using

2.4Ghz? That frequency is saturated and impacted by microwaves, cordless phones, baby monitors, and almost everything else that is wireless.

try dowsing to see if that is indeed the case...
You can try an extender, but you'll probably need to wire it right

to the kitchen.

Might want to consider hard wiring an RJ45 plate right to the kitchen as well (if you have a spot you'll always use), as that will get you the best speed. You can get some nice plates in different colors;

tear down the walls. Pretend Ronald Reagan is talking to you.

Mr. MookGiants tear down this wall

Step 2 have faster internet. If that doesn't fix it, the problem wasn't the wall interfering with the signal.

So that's good.
Had the same problem and it turned out that

the antenas on the router were not up
Without knowing the exactly layout of the room, its tough

to know for sure. But kitchens in general have more stuff on the walls. Metal Appliances, or cabinets filled with Pots and Pans could all contribute to signal loss. In addition, kitchen walls and floors tend to have more things in them (pipes and electric wires). These could also interfere with the signal.

Other possible Kitchen causes:
Microwaves (already mentioned)
Metal Backsplashes
Metal Range hoods
I'm sure if I thought for a bit longer I could think of another dozen or so examples. Kitchens are bad places for wifi signals due to all of the metal objects.
Airport Time Capsules should offer the 5GHz band.

.
5.8 GHz

I agree. 2.4 SUCKS around microwaves, metal, water and the kitchen is loaded with those.

Water pummels WiFi, you have a dishwasher, sink, ice maker (unless you're a caveman) fridge full of liquids...water is bad mmmkay.
