I have an airport time capsule router so its not a cheap router. It's downstairs in a split level house. So not a huge house and i figured it would be fine down there, remodeled house recently and moved the internet stuff downstairs. In my living room right next to my kitchen my speeds are very good, around 100 download. Downstairs they are about 120.
If i walk 10 feet from my living room to kitchen, my speeds get destroyed. I'm lucky to get 2-3 download speeds in my kitchen. I'm puzzled as to why this is. I know when the microwave is being used it impacts it but this is even with it off.
I'm at a loss why this happens. The rest of the house is fine, even points further away from the router than the kitchen is.
Should I just get an airport express to fix the issue in the kitchen? I like to sit in my kitchen and watch the tv in there sometimes
The key is to keep the router as centered as possible, so that the whole house gets coverage.
Is there any real negative to using an extender like an airport express? I dont want to put the router upstairs as I had it there but moved it because in the remodel I put in hardwood floors and didnt want them drilling any holes in the hardwood for the cable to come through like it used to with the carpet, so I moved it downstairs and want to keep it there.
try dowsing to see if that is indeed the case...
Might want to consider hard wiring an RJ45 plate right to the kitchen as well (if you have a spot you'll always use), as that will get you the best speed. You can get some nice plates in different colors;
Step 2 have faster internet. If that doesn't fix it, the problem wasn't the wall interfering with the signal.
So that's good.
Other possible Kitchen causes:
Microwaves (already mentioned)
Metal Backsplashes
Metal Range hoods
I'm sure if I thought for a bit longer I could think of another dozen or so examples. Kitchens are bad places for wifi signals due to all of the metal objects.
Water pummels WiFi, you have a dishwasher, sink, ice maker (unless you're a caveman) fridge full of liquids...water is bad mmmkay.
