J.D. Walton Anchoring New York’s Rebuilt O-Line - ( New Window )
Huge pickup if this guy really pans out.

Hopefuuly the Giants finally scored a good FA at center which would have a ripple effect down the whole OL. Fingers crossed
Good story

Richburg is going to be an animal at center.
If Walton is starting
deadkurtrulz : 7/31/2014 10:37 pm : link
that means the Giants drafted a back up center in rd 2 ? Drafting for depth is something a team with a solid OL can do. That does not describe this Giant team. Richburg is a stud so Giants will put him on the bench while castoffs like Jerry start ? Oy vey. This patchwork line with Beatty at LT is my biggest concern. Hope somehow Giants can pick up a solid OL vet somewhere that is a cap casualty.

Richburg is getting a lot of time at RG. And a lot of praise.

he is excellent getting out on screens. he and pugh are our 2 best blockers, we will need to figure out how we want 2 play this

there's no reason to insert Richburg at that spot. As was pointed out, he's been seeing time at G and getting good reviews. If anyone on the current starting 5 is keeping a seat warm it's Mosley.

dorgan : 8/1/2014 5:26 am : link
his footwork on that clip on the inside zone runs against Pittsburgh. He does a lot right and after contact, gets a good arch, wheels his hips and seals the defender off from the run lane.

Looks really good in that clip. I hope that's the guy we've got. Hard to tell if he's still got that kind of footwork post injury.

We won't know until the real shooting starts if he's completely recovered.

FStubbs : 8/1/2014 7:34 am : link
It'll be good if Richburg is allowed to slowly develop. He'll be a C some day but if he can snag RG and Walton C we're doing well I think.

LT concerns me ... a line of Beatty/Schwartz/Walton/Richburg/Pugh clearly has LT as its weak spot.
I don't agree
Fred-in-Florida : 8/1/2014 7:58 am : link
with the observation that Richberg is getting good reviews at guard. Every time I read something Mosley is starting and Jerry if first sub. What am I missing.

Even in the article by Raanan on "Week 2 stock up and down" the first stock up is Mosley taking 95% of the snaps!?
...
SamTheTram : 8/1/2014 8:01 am : link
I forgot that a 2nd pick is only a success if inserted into the starting lineup the first week of their rookie season training camp.

We could pick up off the street. At 29, the guy is our most seasoned OL and still has upside/room for improvement.

He wasn't the reason our OL sucked last season. Put solid guys to the right of him and Beatty will do fine going one on one with the opposing DEs.
I just hope he can stay healthy. They really need both

The Giants picked the best Center in the draft in round two. His "starter money" notwithstanding, there was no guarantee that Walton would ever return to form; he'd been out-of-action for almost two years. Hence, the Richburg pick, and the desire by the Giants to move on from the Kevin Boothes, Jom Cordles, and Dallas Reynolds of this world. There's depth, and then there's quality depth. Now the Giants have quality depth. To his credit, Richburg is proving to be a capable Guard, a position he only played a handful of times as an underclassman, but he is without question their Center-of-the-future.

The Giants are not fielding a "patchwork" offensive line. That's just plain stupid. "Patchwork" connotes temporary fixes smacking of desperation. That has definitely not been the Giants' O-Line plan this offseason, and to suggest otherwise is, again, just plain stupid.

@giantswfan Morning P Dot. Wondering if Richburg is a starter week one?"

Good chance at RG @GiantsfaninTx

@giantswfan Paul..its early, but based on what you have seen, what's your OLine thoughts?"

Really need games to see. But richburg and walton are a plus @gfan880.

Having a badass true center would be huge for this team?
SB : 8/1/2014 8:51 am : link
When's the last time the Giants have had that? Brian Roberts. O'Hara, while great, was always more of a finesse center, and our short game suffered. It'd be great to see a center that can regularly blow a DT (or two) off the line.
don't know why the hell I put a question mark there
SB : 8/1/2014 8:51 am : link
no question about it. If healthy, he'd be a huge plus.
If Walton can give us two good years
Jimmy Googs : 8/1/2014 9:06 am : link
and then have Richburg step in as a groomed Center that would be perfect. Not saying Walton can't stay longer but at some point you want Richburg in there. In the meanwhile, Richburg either wins a Guard job or is one of the first guys off the bench to backup at Center and/or Guard.

Schwartz locks down LG, Pugh continues to develop at RT.

Who the hell knows what happens at LT, but either way the position gets draft attention next season (or FA if we have the money).

Dreams...
BBI tends to fantasize
Doomster : 8/1/2014 9:19 am : link
that this line is much better than last year, without even seeing them play.....it was so bad last year, it has to be better, right? Well, it should be....the question is, how much better?

First game is this weekend.....I am hoping that this OL is out there for at least 4 series with Eli, and actually shows something, so some of our questions about this line can be answered....

Will this new offense fit Eli? Will he get rid of the ball quicker? Can this OL run block? Can the OL eliminate the communication confusion that was rampant last year?

Will Nassib be the next one out there? Will they keep the same OL in front of him, to really evaluate him?

This extra exhibition game certainly helps this offense get ready for the upcoming season, mainly because it NEEDS it....
This would be great if JD can return to his previous form.
doncam : 8/1/2014 9:36 am : link
I think Mosley can play, and with Richburg waiting, it's a good overall sign for our depth. These are all good, young, and strong interior O Lineman.
Brian Roberts? haha
Greg from LI : 8/1/2014 9:38 am : link
You mean Brian Williams.

Dusty Ziegler played very well for them in the short time before he got hurt.
Got all your questions out for today Doomster?
Jimmy Googs : 8/1/2014 9:38 am : link
The line will be exponentially better just if the starters stay healthy.

4 series for Eli?? I say sit em'.
Some folks see the glass half-full. Others see it half-empty.
Klaatu : 8/1/2014 9:44 am : link
And then there's Doomster, who knocks the glass off the counter so he can see it on the floor, in pieces.
Jim Cordle, a broken down Snee, and Dave Diehl are not on this OL
Ten Ton Hammer : 8/1/2014 9:50 am : link
That's the very definition of improvement.
I am warming to our o-line
Some Fan : 8/1/2014 9:55 am : link
I guess we may have some initial shakiness becasue of the chanegs but I think the o-line will wind up being pretty good. This team seems a little underrated in the media. I hope Beckham is a force this year because I think he can open up the entire offense.
I like JD Walton a lot.
kmed : 8/1/2014 9:57 am : link
I should preface this by saying that I haven't seen a lot of him in action other than some clips and articles and such, but here's what I know...

1. 3 year starter in college. Never missed a game and had a great college career.

2. Was the 2nd center drafted and was highly touted coming into the league(as opposed to a reach that people questioned).

3. Came into the league and started every game plus playoffs. People want to point to bad PFF numbers, but he was playing behind Tebow(enough said).

4. Then a real QB took over and his PFF numbers were great. It's just more proof that those PFF numbers need to be taken with a grain of salt. People try and justify it by saying he got better, but that's hogwash, the offense was better because he had an actual QB.

5. Then he had a severe injury and never made it back.....until now.

The injury concern is legitimate, but IF he regains form, he's going to be a starter on this team and I think he's going to significantly improve the interior line.
Walton looks good on film
Joey in VA : 8/1/2014 9:58 am : link
NO doubt about that, after some early rookie blahs he seemed to really come around. Richburg is the best OL we've taken since Snee, he has the AA to be a perennial Pro Bowler at C or G in my opinion.
You guys are really getting my hopes up
Some Fan : 8/1/2014 10:01 am : link
Does Walton have any limitations in camp from his injury or is he just a full go?
Having 2 good players is only going to help.
kmed : 8/1/2014 10:02 am : link
Hopefully they are versatile enough to play guard as well and from what I have read...they are.

He's full go. Been practicing getting to the second level and blocks on the run.
This line will be significantly improved,
kmed : 8/1/2014 10:06 am : link
but that's not saying much because we were absolute dogsh*t last year.

1. Pugh who was solid, now has a year under his belt. A year of experience. A year of working out. A year of practices and learning. It's realistic to think he will be better.

2. We added Schwartz. Some might think he's just ok, but ok is better than what we had last year. I think it's safe to say that he will be solid and an improvement.

3. We added Walton(see my thoughts on him above).

4. We used our 2nd rounder on Richburg who we are very high on.

5. Beatty can't possibly be worse. He's clearly the biggest question mark on this line, but he's just 1 year removed from a large contract extension because we believed he was an ascending lineman.

6. We have more depth and got rid of some injury proneness.

Will the improvement be enough and will a new offensive system help the line? Time will tell, but I believe the line will be significantly improved.
Thanks TTH
Some Fan : 8/1/2014 10:08 am : link
The more you look at this offense, the more it seems the key is Beckham. That is a lot to ask of a rookie WR but I do believe he will open up the offense and the underneath with his speed and playmaking ability.

We have a different offense than the 2008 version but Beckham may be close to as important as Plax was in 2008.
I'm tickled pink
mrvax : 8/1/2014 10:38 am : link
that Beatty is able to practice/play this early. That is HUGE to me. If Walton is healthy, that's fantastic too. Big upgrade over Boothe and Cordle.

The fact that Mosley is doing well is an amazing development. Let him and Richburg battle for the RG position. Now we have a little depth at Oline.
People
PaulN : 8/1/2014 11:20 am : link
Need to understand that it takes a few seasons to develop a really good OLine, and decent line will be a huge improvement over last season, plus an offensive line still needs talent around it to show it is good. I hope I don't have to get into how important a good defense is around here in Giant land. Reese may not be the best out there, but he has done a good job here.
They've approached it with a layered strategy
Ten Ton Hammer : 8/1/2014 11:24 am : link
Yes, they needed better, healthier players on the OL. In addition to that, they're plugging in an offense with quick hitting and intermediate routes built in so that the line doesn't have to protect as long per play, as for those downfield, home run balls we used to rely on so much.
Walton starting at C this year
Matt M. : 8/1/2014 12:35 pm : link
is not a commentary on Richburg, regardless of whether Richburg starts elsewhere on the OL or not.
What happens if we keep Walton long term
Mr. Nickels : 8/1/2014 1:02 pm : link
I know good problem to have but we spent a 2nd round pick on Richburg. Will Richburg just play guard for us? Seems like a waste to me.
I'm looking forward to O-linemen
81_Great_Dane : 8/1/2014 1:23 pm : link
who aren't a constant threat to fall down and roll up the legs of the other O-linemen and RBs, devastating their knees.

Why do you perceive Richburg a 'waste' if he can play guard at a level high enough to start?
Richburg could still win the job
Phil in LA : 8/1/2014 1:44 pm : link
he's the goods.
Walton has health concerns to overcome and Richburg
BeerFridge : 8/1/2014 1:45 pm : link
is a rookie. Having both and them both working out is far better than having just one and that guy not working out.
Beatty Schwartz Walton Richburg Pugh
SGMen : 8/2/2014 1:10 am : link
Solid OL if Beatty bounces back; Richburg surprises; Walton stays healthy; Schwartz peaks; and Pugh improves.
One thing about Beatty
Joey in VA : 8/2/2014 1:31 am : link
In the pre-season last year he was playing at a level that justified his contract and his draft status. He was playing at an incredibly high level, and he did at times during the season but he was so hot and cold it was incredible. He looked dominant one play, clueless the next, it had to be something we weren't clued in on. It could be mental, but I have no doubt whatsoever that he has the ability to be a top flight LT he just has to want it and be consistent.
Beatty is such a huge question mark.
Jim in Forest Hills : 8/3/2014 5:17 pm : link
He played terribly last year and is now coming off a broken leg. If he's a negative player, his spot could jeopardize the season. He doesn't really have a back up on the team unless you think Pugh can play that spot.
Not as thrilled with that bit of tape as dorgan was.
BlueLou : 8/3/2014 5:35 pm : link
I like the way Walton uses his hands, a TON, and his footwork is good too. He handles a lot of 1 on 1 responsibility vs a nose T on that tape v. the Steelers, and generally does OK, but at times got his ass whipped too. Let's face it, he isn't a doppleganger for Alex Mack either.

Richburg is getting a lot of time at RG. And a lot of praise.
Yes, you won't understand his pick in the draft if you don't understand his presumed versatility.
