Roster Perspective re: LB - Why carry more then 5?

DavidinBMNY : 7/31/2014 8:40 pm
Simply put, the Giants look like they have a plethora of DB's and will want to carry 9 DL. How often will the NYG use 3 LB? 40% of the time tops? Most of the time 2 LB are going to be on the field I believe. Why carry more then 5 unless the argument is Beason's injury history.

The 5 I would go with on paper are Mclean, Beason, Williams. Kennard and 1 of Paysinger/Fox.

This may seem like an irrelevant post, but how else are they going to fit all those DB's?
dont want all

I tend to agree David. TC is going to have to make

a few tough calls after the last preseason game as to the makeup of his 53 guys. While you would hate to keep a 6th LB that is not as talented as say the 5th DT or the 6th CB, it may very well happen.

Consideration of health of starters for Game 1 and special teams value will be the deciding factors.
They could carry only 5 LBs

on opening 53 man roster but Beason has to be back healthy and ready to go
5 healthy LBs make a lot of sense for this team,

with one or two more on the Practice Squad ready for promotion if somebody goes down, especially since the NFL has become a volleyball league and they are loaded at DB.

The problem is Beason's health. If he's really ready to go for game one, then Beason, McClain, Kennard, Williams, and Paysinger make a lot of sense as the five. But if he's not ready to go, they might want to keep another veteran LB around at least temporarily.
you need 5
ANGPASS : 7/31/2014 10:10 pm : link
you need a back ups for MIKE and either OLB. however, i am starting to think pay singer might be the odd man out. i feel like he is as good as he is ever going to get. IF fox has a good showing in preseason, i think they keep beacon, mcclain, kennard, (3starters) and williams (That OLB backup) and Fox (MLB). Which sucks because i like spencer. he is a solid player and you hate to see players get cut, but i do think this is the most likely case if Fox has a good showing in preseason.
Problem with Fox is he is a marginal athlete on his best day.

Herzlich, well, if Beason can play week 1 or 2 I think they should go with 5 LBs also. we use 2 most of the time. No need to have triples there when every other spot on the roster has 1 backup up.I'd rather dump Fox or Herzlich and Keep a guy like James.
I agree on Paysinger
DavidinBMNY : 7/31/2014 10:39 pm : link
The comments out of camp aren't positive on him IIRC. Not sure Fox is a huge upgrade but if he can play middle then the real weakness is William's spot but you could say Cooper Taylor as a Safety might be that guy.
There is no way the Giants are only going to carry 5 LB's

Remember Beason has a long injury history and it is unlikely that he will be healthy for all 16 games. Barring injury the LB's on opening day will be Williams, Beason, McClain, Paysinger, Kennard, and either Herzlich or Fox.
The coverage units are an important part of the equation.

Linebackers are usually among the surest tacklers on a team, and they strike a balance between mass and athleticism. You have to look at other positions (DB, RB, TE, etc,) and ask whether the guys you have there can fill those spots. We have some big RBs, but can they tackle?

Five is thin in any case. I guess it helps that a couple of our DEs can stand up in a pinch, plus one of our safeties is bigger than some linebackers.
The idea about roster shaping
RetroJint : 8/1/2014 7:08 am : link
is that you try & keep the best players available. 5 linebackers should be kept if only 5 deserve to be on the team . If that's the case you can keep one on the practice squad for a quick call up, raid another team's practice squad or sign somebody after one of the in-season free agent work outs that take place. Same with the o-line: don't keep 10 just to have 10. The Giants don't have a particularly talented roster. Therefore the last 5 spots on the team should be fluid
Fox is a good candidate for the Practice Squad.

The guy I'd keep an eye on, though, is Justin Anderson. I think he's got a decent shot at bumping Paysinger off the roster. We'll see.
Really? I have not heard anything about
Jimmy Googs : 8/1/2014 9:20 am : link
Anderson. Fox has gotten some coverage but comments have been that he needs a year or so to build up strength at this level.

I always thought Paysinger would be a nice bench LB guy. Plays specials well and has a few starts at LB under his belt if he needs to cover for an injured starter.
Gut feeling, Jimmy.

He was very productive in college and is a pretty good athlete. All I'm saying is keep an eye on #46 during the preseason.
