John Mara: Giants planned for not having David Wilson

Blue Baller : 8/1/2014 9:16 am
nothing particularly shocking or enlightening here but here it is anyway...

Link - ( New Window )
They are great human interest stories
Defenderdawg : 8/1/2014 9:26 am : link
But relying even in part on Peyton Hillis and Daniel Fells concerns me...Yes the Giants made the playoffs with Ike Forte and Leon Bright and Gary Shirk and Tom Mullady in 1981 but when you look at the high powered offenses around the league they are relying on something more than journeymen.

Bad luck plays a part (i.e. Wilson) but who is to say even with elite speed he was going to be an elite back...when you don't draft well you are going to come up short in a few places without the cap dollars to compensate for all the issues.
While I would agree
UConn4523 : 8/1/2014 9:42 am : link
why wasn't he PUPed then if that's the case? That's the only part i'm pissed about. Injuries happen, but he shouldn't be taking contact yet.
Sounds like Mara thinks
aquidneck : 8/1/2014 9:52 am : link
it's the end of the line for Wilson...

If so, a damned shame from a football standpoint, but probably a major blessing with regard to the young man's health and quality if life going forward.
Personally, I wasn't expecting anything from Wilson this year
kmed : 8/1/2014 9:52 am : link
anyway and I still think we are good at RB. Jennings is a workhorse guy. He's a starter and a 3 down back. The one thing we don't know is if he can handle those duties for a full season. We have a rookie behind him that we really like and who's had a lot of success in the college level. Then we have a few safety blankets behind him. I don't see what people are concerned about. I still like our RB group.
You hope for the best and plan for the worst.
Klaatu : 8/1/2014 9:57 am : link
Wilson was cleared for practice, so he practiced. It's unfortunate that he got hurt, but there's no guarantee that he wouldn't have gotten hurt after coming off the PUP list.
Rashad Jennings is a really good back.
kmed : 8/1/2014 9:58 am : link
I absolutely loved the way this dude ran last year. He runs really hard and with a purpose. I think people are really going to like him when they see him in action. He does a lot of things really well too.
...and he's ALMOST as good
kmed : 8/1/2014 9:59 am : link
as Rashard Jennings who is even better.

Klaatu : 8/1/2014 10:01 am : link

Why PUP a guy who was medically cleared?
Uconn
Blue Baller : 8/1/2014 10:01 am : link
I think once the fusion was done healing there was nothing more to wait on

I'm no doctor but I dont think all the time in the world will make his spinal stenosis go away
Thanks Klaatu,
kmed : 8/1/2014 10:08 am : link
I will never make the mistake again, now it's ingrained in my head.
I thought it was Rashard, too.
Klaatu : 8/1/2014 10:09 am : link
Had to look it up.
It doesn't change the fact that I'm a big fan, ya know.
kmed : 8/1/2014 10:11 am : link
Last year there were some posters who suggested we target him as a FA and I didn't think it was realistic. I thought he'd garner much more attention as a FA as well as a much larger contract, but I'm pumped it happened. I enjoy the way he runs.
Jennings
Mark from Jersey : 8/1/2014 10:14 am : link
looks like he is in great shape too...seeing him run I was like who is this athletic looking free at RB. Much different tone than I remember from the Jacksonville days.
I was in the Toby Gerhart camp.
Klaatu : 8/1/2014 10:14 am : link
Nothing against Jennings, but all of the chatter I'd heard pointed to the Raiders re-signing him and letting McFadden walk. In fact, I remember hearing around Combine time that they'd already had a deal in place. Well...so much for the chatter.

Because hindsight is 20/20.
Yeah I didn't think Jennings was realistic either,
kmed : 8/1/2014 10:17 am : link
but because he'd get too much money. The fact that the Raiders kept McFadden and let him walk is more proof that he's a guy I want. They are the dumbest organization in the sport(ok maybe not the dumbest, but up there). I'm just glad we got him.
Here's his highlight clip
kmed : 8/1/2014 10:21 am : link
from 2013. He's a real tough runner, good in space, fast, quick, solid pass catcher.

Wilson needs to worry
mdc1 : 8/1/2014 10:23 am : link
about his life. Sometimes things don't work out and a signal to move along to a different way of approaching life.
I think the Giants can afford
mrvax : 8/1/2014 10:25 am : link
to sit Wilson for the entire season with Wilson just learning blocking and ball security drills.

Give it one last chance next year and see what happens then. It would totally suck if his career was over or he got seriously injured.

The Giants have some good guys at RB for 2014 and Andre Williams can catch a ball.
Its not about the stenosis
UConn4523 : 8/1/2014 10:32 am : link
he will always have that unless he gets surgery for it later in life to widen the spinal canal.

Fusion takes after a month or so and is technically healed 6-8 months. However, being medically cleared doesn't mean too much. Guys are medically cleared all the time and don't play. If they thought it was a longshot for him to play this year, why even have him start the season? Why not take your time and PUP him?

It makes no sense to me. Felt the same way with JPP. It isn't just about the bone. Its about the muscles, ligaments, mental psyche that all needs time to get back to speed.
The didn't think it was a long shot that he would play in July

Holliday in the mix

Don't be surprised if Holliday is moved back to RB to do what Wilson was supposed to do.

This is not a bad idea at all. he can't really catch the ball, but he has excellent vision and could take a hand off about 2 times a game. idk y they don't use him as a sproles type of roll. he is so small, he can be hard to locate for defenders. but maybe because he is a lot thinner than sproles
IMHO...
Beer Man : 8/1/2014 10:51 am : link
Best Case Wilson goes to the IR, and is given the time to heal the neck. Worst/most likely case, he's done.
I'm actually really excited about Andre Williams
mac attack : 8/1/2014 10:51 am : link
I believe he will be our leading rusher this year
In my uneducated opion
Blue Baller : 8/1/2014 10:55 am : link
I think he either is a go now or never

I doubt he suffered any damage on the play he got the stinger. It will either be chalked up to knocking the rust off or it will be deemed that he is not fit for contact sports.

I don't think additional time is going to help....but then again I am clearly talking out of my ass here

I don't agree
UConn4523 : 8/1/2014 11:00 am : link
he's not 35. He so young and has so much time. The injury heals, and heals successfully at a high rate. Other older players have come back from this. He needs to take his time, and the team should take their time with him.
He doesn't have 'an injury'
Blue Baller : 8/1/2014 11:07 am : link
he has a condition. he had surgery to treat the condition

That condition was hopefully mitigated by the surgery but it is not going away

arcarsenal : 8/1/2014 11:09 am : link
I'm really, really bummed about Wilson. He was the guy I wanted to see in this offense the most. Hopefully we get positive news on Monday, but.. obviously it doesn't look good right now.

I am a big fan of Jennings, though. He was the guy I wanted the Giants to target all along and I was absolutely thrilled when they landed him. I think he's going to be a guy Giant fans really like a lot. He doesn't have a lot of mileage on his wheels and he runs hard and can be a very good player if given a decent workload. Very excited about him.
Best things in that highlight video of Jennings
Jimmy Googs : 8/1/2014 11:32 am : link
is he really looks like a natural pass receiver, and that he doesn't go down from the first tackler.

Pulling for Gaskins too. Look forward to seeing him a bit on Sunday to see if he can displace Hillis and/or Cox.
If they didn't plan on Wilson,
Doomster : 8/1/2014 11:34 am : link
then they didn't plan on depth at the RB position either.....

God forbid Williams fumbles a ball, or has TC changed?
A real shame
Taggart : 8/1/2014 12:07 pm : link
and unfortunate side effect of Dave Diehl playing too long.
Deihl caused Wilson's spinal stenosis?

Stenosis is a condition and that's not what he had surgery for. He had fusion, taking out the damaged discs. This also helps the stenosis in part as there are now less discs that can irritate the spinal cord.

The stenosis isn't keeping him from playing, or he would have never been cleared in the first place. Many athletes have stenosis. His issue will be getting full strength back, and taking hits in that area.

Overall, I'm willing to bet the doctors don't think he's at much more of a risk than any other player at RB. Healing time is critical though.
It would suck if he can't play for SURE
Johnny5 : 8/1/2014 1:13 pm : link
That said, I had already figured he was a long shot to be back, and I'm comfortable with Jennings, Hillis and Andre Williams carrying the load. I think Jennings is going to be a really good back and I think Hillis is better than most of BBI gives him credit for.
doing a bit more research
Blue Baller : 8/1/2014 1:24 pm : link
looks like the surgery was to correct a herniated disc

my bad (I did say I was talking out of my ass)
Starting to get pretty bummed about this.
GiantFilthy : 8/1/2014 1:26 pm : link
When it all went down last year I thought that was it and felt bad for the kid losing out on a career.

Now I'm starting to feel half as bad for myself as a fan due to the offense that has been implemented.

Haha, its certainly easy to confuse. The kid has been through a lot, which really sucks. I'm still holding out hope; not for this year, but for some sort of a career (hopefully next year).

Him taking a break from all the pressure of coming back ASAP would be recommendation #1 if I were a family member.

Why would you PUP a guy who is cleared by doctors to practice? That doesnt make sense, and the players association would likely file a grievance over something like that

I don't know how it works logistically, to be honest. But the NFL has is taking a stand against head/neck injuries and I could easily see a workaround to get Wilson PUPed. But players that are cleared don't practice or play all the time. Wilson wouldn't lose any pay being PUPed so unless i'm missing something, what would the ramifications be if he agreed with it?
I was very impressed with the way Jennings ran
Matt M. : 8/1/2014 2:51 pm : link
the second half of last year, when he was finally entrenched as the starter. He runs hard, has nice speed, and is very good in the passing game. He is someone I was hoping the Giants would target in FA and as soon as they did I thought they had their starting RB. So, I expect a very nice season from him. Wilson would be nice to have, but he also has done nothing to prove he could consistently contribute.

On the other hand, at least Hillis has shown good hands, good blocking, and he runs hard. He isn't a HR threat, but they don't need him to be. I think Brown will have a decent role in the offense by the second half of the season as well.
