NFT: Knicks question....

kmed : 8/1/2014 9:34 am
Can the Knicks do a sign and trade? The reason I ask is because the Pistons are discussing a Monroe sign and trade and I was curious if the Knicks can even get involved. I haven't quite been as up to date with the new CBA rules. Grassy ass in advance.

They can but after the sign and trade is completed

the must be under the tax apron...if they are not then the trade can not be done...so basically Stoudemire would have to be involved in the deal..
Thanks

Shump Larkin and Bargs would be a fair deal considering how keeping monroe wouldn't be a good fit long term for Detroit

no it wouldn't. Just because Detroit may not want to keep Monroe long term that doesn't mean they're just going to give him away for Shump/Larkin.
best case for us would be if he

signs his QO and becomes restricted next summer. Based on age, I'd probably prefer him to Marc Gasol next summer.
I know this wasn't really brought up on this thread

but I think people are making way too much of who is or isn't going to be available in NBA FA next off season. Of course we would all like for an elite player to sign here as a FA with the Knicks but the trade market is going to open up. The Knicks won't be dealing from weakness anymore especially if some of these younger players can develop a little more over the next 10 months. Guys like Early, Larkin, Hardaway. Cap room and some young talent and a draft pick offer the Knicks some ammo to make a trade if and when that player is available.

Maybe they don't add that big time player in FA but they might be able to trade for him. Then add the 3rd and 4th wheel in FA...

Agreed, however I'd argue some of them have to show significant improvement...not just a "little more" development. Larkin is basically starting from scratch and Shump has to bounce back in a major way (especially considering he's an UFA very soon).
speaking of trade targets

Simmons recently floated the possibility (he was just making it up and not reporting news) of Amare/Hardaway/Early and two first rounders (2018/2020) for Rondo/Green/Wallace. His general premise was something we've talked about here a few times: there's really not much of a market for Rondo right now. Most teams have a quality PG and seemingly all the teams that might be interested aren't destinations where he'd necessarily sign long-term.

To me, I'm not loving that offer considering it leaves them capped out with zero hope of landing a big man until 2016. And of course there's the whole issue of whether or not he fits in the triangle (Hahn has said a couple of times that he doesn't).

And more and more people are reporting that he's a real headache in the lockerroom. I personally think you could fit Rondo into the Triangle because he's a really good passer, but seeing as you'd probably have to give up a good haul to get him I don't think I want to do it anymore. Jeff Green, however, is made for the Triangle offense.
I think Phil/Fisher

could make it work with Rondo. His passing and defense seemingly make him a fit with any team. But nobody is more plugged in than Hahn...and if he says he's not a fit, then I'm inclined to believe him.
Rondo wants max money
giantsfan44ab : 8/1/2014 4:14 pm : link
And aside from the absolute elite guys like Rose, Westbrook and CP3, no PGs are worth max money. There are just too many good PGs in the league to give someone like Rondo full money. There are going to be PGs available every year like Dragic, Brandon Knight, Brandon Jennings, and reggie Jackson over the next few years. Obviously none of those guys are on par with Rondo but the Lakers ran the triangle through Derek Fisher. Big contracts need to be invested on big men not guards.
rajon rondo for my money is the most overrated player in the league
MarshallOnMontana : 8/1/2014 5:24 pm : link
Id take 10 plus point guards over him without blinking, truthfully more than that. I dont care how many assists he compiles by often stat chasing and over passing (he was obnoxious during that double digit assist game streak a couple years back), his offensive value is highly overrated. The way defenses are allowed to play you when your pg cant even hit free throws let alone stretch the floor from distance has serious offensive consequences. Theres a reason that despite being surrounded by hall of famers the celts offenses were consistently mediocre to below average under him even when they were contending. Hes never led an offense much north of average in his career. I would never touch him at big money. He has many unique redeeming qualities but hes a flawed player
regarding the celt offenses
MarshallOnMontana : 8/1/2014 6:12 pm : link
Im referring to when he was handed the keys. The celts had top third offenses in the first two years of the big three, but he didnt have anything resembling ownership of those teams, especially the team that won it in 08
All Rondo can really do is pass
#10* : 8/1/2014 6:12 pm : link
Don't think that constitutes max money. Plus he looks like he has an attitude most of the time. Pass.
