Giants will not be good this year

tommy boy : 8/1/2014 11:29 am
I'm listening in my car Thinking it was ESPN but i'm not sure

The announcer says that David Wilson will be out for the year

decimating our running game and the offensive line has not been upgraded over last year.

This made me so fucking angry----even a casual fan knows on
paper our running game and offensive line are greatly
improved not to mention our line backing being stronger than ever

is this stupidity or just to have something to say to fill up air space
This is the dead period of the calendar for sports. Gotta say somethin

Anyone who thought Wilson was going to be a big part of the running game was probably fairly clueless...so why bother listening to their other thoughts?
Well, thanks for the heads-up!

There. I said it.

but nobody will know until the first game or two. we may see signs during the preseason that our offense is in trouble adjusting to the new system or that our secondary is not as good as we thought it would be on paper but that’s what makes the game interesting
Um...
mattlawson : 8/1/2014 11:39 am : link
When did David Wilson become the key piece to our offense? To me he's never shown much on offense - only potential especially in this West Coast style that were running now - and it's mostly only been proven on special-teams am I wrong about that?

Wilson is not even a dinkle berry in tikis as as far as a producer. giants will be way better. they will cut their turnovers by more than half. that is the main reason they were losing games last year.

They planned to go into the season without him, losing him would suck but not exactly derail plans.

Also, unless I'm mistaken, he's not meeting with his Dr until Monday.
How does Wilson being out "decimate" their running game?

Is it really controversial to think the Giants won't be good?
Mad Mike : 8/1/2014 11:56 am : link
I agree with everyone that we don't know yet, and I certainly hope we'll be good, but there's plenty of reason for pessimism and it hardly seems noteworthy or questionable for someone to predict that it will be a disappointing season.

The Giants may suck, but to use Wilson being injured as a reason just seems lazy. There are lots of reasons the Giants may struggle but Wilson not playing isn't one of them.

8-8 type team. We'll see.

Has the o-line really been upgraded? Maybe marginally. And there will be injuries.

Looking back to that line's pinnacle, it really was incredible how healthy they all stayed so many years in a row.

LB core is certainly improved... with Beason. Let's hope he can play this year and at last year's level. Remember, the reason Carolina traded him for nothing was because he was always hurt. Hoping for the best.

My expectations are fairly low. Hoping to be pleasantly surprised.

"I've never heard of these guys, so they must stink."

Most of those sportstalk guys have never heard of the Giants' prospects, and never consider the idea that players from previous drafts might have developed now, so in their minds: Richburg will stink, Kennard will stink, Mosely will stink, Taylor will stink, Hankins will stink, Moore, and so on. But I don't think those guys will stink. I think some of those guys are going to be very good, and light-years better than the guys who left.

I left Robinson off, because after landing at the bottom of the depth chart, I'm thinkin' he might actually stink.
the OL has been improved a lot more than "marginally"
djm : 8/1/2014 1:30 pm : link

The only question mark is LT if you ask me. The other four spots have clearly been addressed and at least on paper, upgraded. There are three extra, pretty talented bodies (Schwartz, Walton and Richburg) that weren't involved with last year's unit and the guys they are replacing were downright horrible last season. We aren't asking these guys to replace much.

Add in that Pugh and Mosely are a year older, throw in the added depth from the likes of Jerry and Brown and you have an OL that has all but been completely revamped.

Everyone wanted change this off season. Everyone wanted the OL to be rebuilt. The Giants spent good money on interior linemen in Schwartz and Walton and spent a high pick on (probably) the best interior lineman of this draft in Richburg. Really can't ask for more than that.

The OL will probably be overrated by season's end because it's going to be at least average this season. And that will prompt people to label the unit a bit unfairly because of what we saw in 2013.
and really
djm : 8/1/2014 1:33 pm : link
if everyone here was told that Beatty would actually be practicing right now, even if limited, people would be thrilled.

It's early but you have to be a little bit encouraged with the OL this summer. Richburg is getting a lot of love and Beatty is upright and on the field. If those two things hold true to form the OL will be the least of our worries. And we have decent depth.
lmao

Ah so you're taking our lineup towards end of year after 10+ games and injuries and comparing it to our unit August 1, pre a single snap. Not to mention limited experience of the former 3rd/4th round picks occupying 2/5's of our paper-thin depth OL this year.

Makes perfect sense.

so I guess we just think each other's comments are stupid. That's fine.

I just think its low brow to assume any opinion different then yours (who are you exactly?) is "stupid"... 8-8 as pretty much been where this team has been since 2009. It's not exactly an outrageous statement.
I hope you are right, djm

I still think it was "marginal" improvement but we'll find out soon enough and happy to eat crow.
I still say
djm : 8/1/2014 1:46 pm : link
the biggest injury last season, especially early on was the one to Andre Brown. Once he went down, the running game went with him. The OL was never going to be great last year but with Brown in the fold they would have at least come close to running the ball. Without BRown the offense became one dimensional and opposing defenses were able to sink their teeth into the NY offense. The OL never had a chance last year. And again, I am not saying that the unit wasn't without weaknesses but the RB injuries really made things worse.

We have Rashad Jennings now who is a capable RB much like Andre Brown was but Jennings is better out of the backfield and hopefully healthier.

If the Giants have a healthy Andre Brown for 80% of the time in 2012 and 2013 they make the playoffs and probably win at least 8-9 games last year. The lack of a real RB on this team just killed them. Andre Brown running the ball means we probably beat Dallas in week 1. Probably beat the Bears...or the Eagles....or all three.
MAB
djm : 8/1/2014 1:49 pm : link
it might be marginal...semantics really...but even marginal would go a long way assuming Jennings, Williams and the RBs are up to the task. Just tell me Jennings plays 14 games and i'll take my chances with this offense. ONe thing we have seen that people seem to forget far too often is when you give Eli a running game, the Giants make the playoffs. Every year except 2010 and they still won 10 games.

That's the key and the Giants to a man know it. They Must run the ball in 2014.
typo
djm : 8/1/2014 1:56 pm : link
if NYG had Andre Brown for 80% they make the pkayoffs in 2012. Not sure about 2013 but a healthy Brown in September last year certainly would have helped.

"and there will be injuries" during TC is absurd. And Tyron Smith can break his leg and Foles can tear an achilles and RGIII can get a concussion and any NFCE DB core can be decimated by injuries. At this stage, why throw that in the mix? What is the point? You can say that about ANY TEAM OR POSITION!
For the record
blueblood'11 : 8/1/2014 2:57 pm : link
if I'm not mistaken last year they finished eigth overall in defense. And Beason was really their only big time linebacker. They've improved in that area this year significantly.

Their secondary held it's own for the most part and one would have to be blind not to see the depth and load of talent the depth that unit possesses. It should be a strength and one of the better secondaries in all the NFL.

They have three bonifide starters along the offensive line and the drafting of Weston adds to that and is expected to be a starter. A lot depends on Beatty but can he play any worse. He can only play better.

Depth at running back. They are swimming in it this year. Last year it was nonexistent. With all that said there are no guaruntees. But for people to just arbitrarily write this team off because of what occurred last year are not paying attention to the talent this team currently possesses.
The O-line is much better than this year.
Mike L. : 8/1/2014 3:13 pm : link
Walton & Swartz and improvements over Boothe and Cordle (Baas only played in 2 games). Mosley should be a least as good as last years Dheil, Pugh has a year under his belt and added 10 pounds. Beatty is healthy, and can't really play worse than last year. Now we have Richburg, impressive rookie, Jerry, has started multiple games in the NFL as has Brown. That's a fairly sizable upgrade from what we had last year.

Section331 : 8/1/2014 3:28 pm : link
but do we really know if it will be greatly improved? I agree that their comments about th eNYG relying on Wilson are absurd, but I have no idea what to expect from the OL. Hoping for the best, but far from certain about it.
Mediocre is optimistic
Josh in MD : 8/1/2014 4:06 pm : link
I hope they win it all. But I wouldn't be surprised by 4-12. They were about a 3-13 team last year until they stumbled on the bizarre luck of a string of games (what was it, five?) with the opposing QB out, so the record got inflated to 7-9. Are they better now? One of the few stong areas last year was run-stop. We've lost our 2 best DL against the run and one of our better safties and may lose some time from our best LB. The guy who was supposed to improve our WR corps is not able to play now, we have no convincing TE, a bunch of maybes at RB, a line that may have improved by subtraction but we don't know about the additions, and a QB who may or may not bounce back from a terrible season. The one offensive position at which we are strong is FB, and apparently that is being phased out. On D, the pass rush depends more than at any time in memory on 1 guy who was hurt last year, but mediocre the year before. Apart from Beason, we still don't know if we have a quality starter anywhere at LB, and we are stong at 1 spot, CB. Maybe JPP and Eli bounce back. Myabe Beason and Odell get healthy. Maybe a bunch of the FA signings play better than in the past. Maybe several of our rooks, second-year and thrid-year guys blossom. That would all add up to a winning season. But the failure of most of those things to happen would not surprise me. Who knows?
4-12 sounds awfully low

to me Josh. I would be surprised.
And I don't disagree that we were truthfully
Jimmy Googs : 8/1/2014 4:15 pm : link
that record (about 4-12) but for the back-up QB thing.

But I just can't imagine this team could have the same level of turnovers, injuries and poor special teams play that it did last season. Those should "normalize" to some degree and count as a few more wins at least.
Don't know how
OC : 8/1/2014 4:51 pm : link

Josh in MD : 8/1/2014 6:32 pm : link
The fact they were wretched before does not prove they are better now. Boothe was probably our second best lineman last season. He's gone, much to TC's pretty open unhappiness. Beatty was awful, but will a broken leg make him better? So we've added an untested draft choice and some FAs who are coming off major injury or were mostly subs in their careers. I'm a passionate fan and have been nearly six decades, so I want badly to be wrong. But I don't see the evidence for optimism--just the preseason hopes we always have as do the fans of all the other teams.

GeofromNJ : 8/1/2014 9:03 pm : link
Wilson was not a factor last year, and the O-line is easily better than last year, and I say this before watching even one preseason game.
Keep in mind that the Giants defense
eclipz928 : 8/1/2014 9:43 pm : link
finished ranked 8th last season. I don't care who they played, they got the job done. The offense was THE problem with this team last year.

They kept Eli, Cruz, Pugh and Beatty and upgraded everyone else, including the coordinator. The jury is out on whether or not this team will be "good" next season but I'm confident they will be better. And if they're better than they're 7-9 finish from last season there's a good chance they'll win the division.
Biggest reason I think we'll be better this year: less turnovers
SGMen : 8/1/2014 10:32 pm : link
No way we repeat the number of turnovers we had last year.

Also, we lost more man games to injury then any other team in the league last year (I believe...) and I pray that doesn't happen again.

If we stay fairly healthy, play solid defense and special teams we will be fine.

Klaatu : 8/2/2014 7:53 am : link
If you don't think the interior of the Giants O-Line has been significantly upgraded, I don't know what to tell you. Sure, TC lamented the loss of Boothe. Not only was he a versatile player, but he came up big for the Jay Fund, too. However, he was also eminently upgradeable, and with the signings of Geoff Schwartz and J.D. Walton at the start of free agency, the writing was on the wall for the 31 year-old Boothe. Drafting Weston Richburg put the punctuation mark on that.

At OT, unless Justin Pugh comes down with a serious case of the Sophomore Blues, I expect him to perform better than he did as a rookie (which was pretty damned good, all things considered). He's had a year in the program, is reportedly bigger and stronger, and has been looking good in camp.

Will Beatty is still something of an enigma, but I consider the fact that he was not PUPed before camp began - something that many fans and pundits predicted - to be a very positive sign. Migraines aside - and they're not something to take lightly - he's had a good camp, too. You might want to look at the clip of him knocking JPP on his ass. I expect Beatty to rebound from his abysmal 2013 campaign.

the line has been upgraded, on paper, individually....

But you still have Beatty being counted on.....

They "nickel and dimed" Boothe for years, while paying others around him, much more money, even though he played better than them....He was knocked for last year's performance, but look who played to the left and right of him....now they are paying Schwartz, 5x's the amount of money they paid Boothe....think they get their money's worth? And they are playing him out of position....

Counting on a center that has an injury history?

Revolving door at RG?

Pugh, is the best guy on the line at the moment....

No depth?

And just how long have these guys played together?

Yes, when you have reached the bottom of the pit, there is no place to go but up.....but in this case, how high will up be?
