Cespedes is on a plane it seems
WeatherMan : 8/1/2014 6:01 pm : link
he'll debut tomorrow. Mike Carp was DFA'd for anyone looking for a bench bat 1B that can theoretically also play OF, opening the spot for the return of Mookie Betts.

Anthony Ranaudo is making his major league debut tonight, one of the bevy of young arms at the top of the system the Sox will be using the rest of the way to gauge their major league future. In 119 innings in AAA this year he's 12-4 with a 2.41 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 99 strikeouts to 49 walks. Fastball sits low 90s and can reach mid 90s, best pitch is a plus curve and this year he's dropped the changeup for a slider which has markedly improved his minor league numbers.
I was wondering why it is taking Cespedes so long
RasputinPrime : 8/1/2014 6:03 pm : link
to arrive. Prado is due to arrive at gametime apparently.
going west coast to east coast isn't a quick trip
WeatherMan : 8/1/2014 6:05 pm : link
and since Holt can play 7 different positions I'm fine with him debuting tomorrow. If he gets in this evening maybe he can pinch hit late.
WM - as a Sox fan
RasputinPrime : 8/1/2014 6:21 pm : link
how do you feel about the team's unwillingness to spend money to keep its all-time great players over the last decade? I'm not prescribing a regular overpay but they seem pretty quick to cut bait with players the second they are set to earn any real money.

Yeah, we know. Papi was on record crying about it to anyone that would listen recently. Cespedes is gonna likely need a month to recover
they blew it in the spring with the insulting 4 for $70 offer
WeatherMan : 8/1/2014 6:28 pm : link
Lester was publicly willing to take a hometown discount and they lowballed him to an extreme. Homer Bailey got 6 for $105 in February, go a little higher than that and a durable, homegrown lefty with a history of being dominant in the playoffs gets locked up long term. Now he'll be hitting the market and getting 6/150 or more to the highest bidder, and if that ends up being the Yankees I'll be fucking furious. I'm over the deal as with no hope for an extension it had to happen, but they had a chance to get this done in the spring and fucking blew it and that pisses me off to no end.
if i was a betting man
sinctybldh : 8/1/2014 6:29 pm : link
i will bet the yankees get lester. not having a pick attached to him will make him much more attractive to them.
Not weather
Bill L : 8/1/2014 6:30 pm : link
But my unsolicited opinion is they they screwed this one up. Not so much by what line they do or do not have, but by the initial low ball offer that killed amicable in-season negotiation.

I actually disagree with your premise. It's generally length of contracts as opposed to numbers. Further, I saw an article today about long-term contracts (5,6,7 years) for over-30 pitchers. In almost very case, the team lost our over the life of Ty contract in terms of results. That even includes Verlander and Cliff Lee. So I'm actually okay with the principle. Now, whether Lester breaks the pattern and whether it's a poor idea to be inflexible in the philosophy is a good question.
and just when I thought I'd have a reason
WeatherMan : 8/1/2014 6:36 pm : link
to back Oakland this postseason, to make room for Gomes and Lester my cousin just got DFA'd. Damn.
who's your cousin?
RasputinPrime : 8/1/2014 6:53 pm : link
You may get lucky and have him wind up on the Sox.
I would imagine it's Evan Scribner
Greg from LI : 8/1/2014 6:56 pm : link
Since he was just DFAed by Oakland
yep
WeatherMan : 8/1/2014 7:11 pm : link
he's been pitching well when given the chance, hopefully a team picks him up somewhere.
worked around the leadoff walk
WeatherMan : 8/1/2014 7:19 pm : link
solid start to things.
and we start
RasputinPrime : 8/1/2014 7:22 pm : link
someone the sox through away
choke on that food
RasputinPrime : 8/1/2014 7:27 pm : link
you cheap bastid.
the good old 4 out inning
WeatherMan : 8/1/2014 7:29 pm : link
if Capuano leaves many more of those in the middle of the zone he's giving up a homer tonight.
"a" homer?
RasputinPrime : 8/1/2014 7:34 pm : link
you are being humble.
there's been a bit of a power outage this season
WeatherMan : 8/1/2014 7:37 pm : link
Cespedes alone has hit more homers this season than every OF on the Sox roster... combined.
Old announcers are old ballplayers
Bill L : 8/1/2014 7:38 pm : link
They don't really understand or appreciate prospects. So trades always look bad to them even if the major league guy is mediocre...not that Price us...
They also don't understand Boston and Stephen Drew
Bill L : 8/1/2014 7:41 pm : link
They needed him out of Boston, even for a bag of balls. He was blocking Middlebrooks who they need to evaluate.
it was nice seeing the Rays get hosed in a deal for once
WeatherMan : 8/1/2014 7:42 pm : link
with contention out of the picture I'm looking forward to seeing the kids develop for the rest of the year - start Workman, start Webster, start De la rosa (until his innings limit), start Ranaudo, hell, maybe give Wright a shot, his control numbers for a knuckleballer this year have been crazy good in AAA.
Me too
Bill L : 8/1/2014 7:45 pm : link
They are already much better offensively. I'm not sure their record will be much different than before yesterday
But I sort of hope it's worse
Bill L : 8/1/2014 7:46 pm : link
To stay in the top 10
rays farm system is garbage
sinctybldh : 8/1/2014 7:46 pm : link
and that is why i was very surprised that friedman made that deal without getting back any top prospects.
it'd be nice free agency wise to have that protected pick
WeatherMan : 8/1/2014 7:47 pm : link
Scherzer is sure to get a QO, amongst others
Middlebrooks with an ugly swinging strikeout
WeatherMan : 8/1/2014 7:49 pm : link
great power, plate discipline not so much.
Next year it's marrero and Bogaerts
Bill L : 8/1/2014 7:50 pm : link
Which is why this is not that great a move to move X
I was a strong proponent of leaving Bogaerts at short
WeatherMan : 8/1/2014 7:55 pm : link
and still am - give him the chance to win it. If he can be an average defender there he's worth a ton with his bat. Marrero only recently got to AAA, I want to see him prove the step forward with the bat this year is real and not rush him up.
tie goes to the runner, damn
WeatherMan : 8/1/2014 8:00 pm : link
helluva play by Bogaerts to get it, kept the run from scoring
Holt with the triple
WeatherMan : 8/1/2014 8:07 pm : link
this guy is nonstop hustle, one of the few bright spots of this season
Nice statue play by Teix
NYerInMA : 8/1/2014 8:08 pm : link
On the triple.
double to the triangle
WeatherMan : 8/1/2014 8:11 pm : link
if that doesn't get in the stands Pedroia might've had 3. Another hit, 2-0.
Capuano
NYerInMA : 8/1/2014 8:12 pm : link
Runs into trouble early. 2 runs should be enough for the Sox to win this one.
stranded 2
WeatherMan : 8/1/2014 8:21 pm : link
lots of strong contact that inning though, time for a pint.
and Beltran lines one into the pen
WeatherMan : 8/1/2014 8:23 pm : link
left a fastball up and he turned on it.
nice recovery after the homer
WeatherMan : 8/1/2014 8:28 pm : link
3 quick outs, only 60 pitches through 4 innings for Ranaudo. Good composure out there.
Ross is looking gimpy out there
WeatherMan : 8/1/2014 8:33 pm : link
gets the run in though, 3-1
I cannot look at Brian McCann anymore.
Shockeyisthebest80 : 8/1/2014 9:09 pm : link
They need to drop him down in the order, especially as Beltran gets hot.
the rookie gets through 6
WeatherMan : 8/1/2014 9:12 pm : link
solid work with runners on, needs to cut down on the lead off walks but overall that's a solid debut.
Great defense from Headley in this game.
Shockeyisthebest80 : 8/1/2014 9:15 pm : link
...
Uh oh...looks like we will see Vasquez now
Bill L : 8/1/2014 9:19 pm : link
Not a terrible thing
Headley flashing the leather again
WeatherMan : 8/1/2014 9:20 pm : link
and now Ross is really limping, get him out of the game already dammit
if he needs a DL stint
WeatherMan : 8/1/2014 9:21 pm : link
it's probably Dan Butler coming up, they don't want to start the service clock on Swihart and Lavarnway is on the 60 day DL
I think lavarney is in his rehab
Bill L : 8/1/2014 9:22 pm : link
For some reason I thought they released butler...I guess I was thinking of someone else
No butler is in paw
Bill L : 8/1/2014 9:23 pm : link
Not sure why I thought he was gone
either are less than great options
WeatherMan : 8/1/2014 9:24 pm : link
going Vazquez full time isn't a bad thing though, he's going to be the primary C next year
nice inning by Layne
WeatherMan : 8/1/2014 9:26 pm : link
for a guy profiled as a LOOGY that was a nice 1-2-3.
Nice Gardner
Model4001 : 8/1/2014 9:27 pm : link
way to stand there and take three strikes.
I'm guessing swihart comes fast
Bill L : 8/1/2014 9:27 pm : link
I wouldn't be shocked if it was next August. Love him based on what I read.
that wouldn't surprise me in the least
WeatherMan : 8/1/2014 9:31 pm : link
all the reports have his defense major league ready, and that was the concern going through the minors as he can rake at the plate. Keep him at the minors for the first two months of next year minimum for service time purposes, and he'll likely break through not too long thereafter.
Jeter standing on top of the third baseman doesn't
Shockeyisthebest80 : 8/1/2014 9:38 pm : link
seem like a sound defensive alignment.
insurance run, 4-2
WeatherMan : 8/1/2014 9:38 pm : link
good night at the plate for Pedroia
Another rookie
nygnyy274 : 8/1/2014 9:42 pm : link
going tomorrow equals another loss
glad they got the extra
WeatherMan : 8/1/2014 9:45 pm : link
Jeter launches the first offering from Tazawa over the monster. 4-3.
Mookie! great grab
WeatherMan : 8/1/2014 9:46 pm : link
just robbed Beltran of at least a double
Not bad for a second baseman
Bill L : 8/1/2014 9:46 pm : link

We should be beating these scrubs.
Tarawa looks like crap though
Bill L : 8/1/2014 9:47 pm : link
.
Tazawa
Bill L : 8/1/2014 9:48 pm : link
.
hope they've got Koji up
WeatherMan : 8/1/2014 9:48 pm : link
might need more than 3 from him tonight, Tazawa not himself thus far
Please tie the game Brian McCann and I won't say anything negative
Shockeyisthebest80 : 8/1/2014 9:50 pm : link
about you for the rest of the season.
got out of it
WeatherMan : 8/1/2014 9:57 pm : link
3 outs from getting the rook a win in his debut.
and Koji slams the door
WeatherMan : 8/1/2014 10:13 pm : link
1-2-3, Sox win
Pathetic
Kulish29 : 8/1/2014 10:13 pm : link
Cant even beat a crappy Sox team and a rookie pitcher.
Yanks have lost 5 of 6, including
Shockeyisthebest80 : 8/1/2014 10:14 pm : link
3 of 4 to a pair of the worst teams in baseball.

The scariest part is they don't look even the slightest bit better than those "bad" teams.
New players, same old offense
Kyle in NY : 8/1/2014 10:14 pm : link
That catch in center was a back breaker, saved the game.
How is this team over .500?
section125 : 8/1/2014 10:15 pm : link
Pathetic.
At least Beltran is starting to hit.

Sadly they can't. The last 2 weeks they have faced nothing but garbage pitching aside from Darvish I shiver to see what the tigers are going to do against this shit offense next week when they throw their best 4 pitchers at this pathetic offense. Price making his tiger debut Tuesday
Jeter's slugging
PaulBlakeTSU : 8/1/2014 11:19 pm : link
is finally higher than his OBP, for seemingly the first time all season.
