if he's getting hurt running into someone's back, it was just a matter of time before he took a helmet to helmet and something much more serious happened.
Garafolo seems to think it's still not determined how long, so why would there be an injury settlement?
Mike Garafolo @MikeGarafolo 3m
No, that's TBD still, I'm told. But short term, he won't be playing. RT @justin_pelazza: does this mean he will never play again?
Breaking: Source. Giants doctors are shutting down RB David Wilson due to the neck injury that he sustained last year and most recently in camp. There is a belief that the injury could be career ending.
to radically accept that he is never going to be an NFL player, the sooner he will come to find another career that might still keep him around the sport he loves.
I feel bad for him(and for all the potential he had for the team) at least he got a nice paycheck to start his life after football.Hope he handled it wisely.
Wish him the best in the future.
could have been the best thing that ever happened to him. Clearly there was still an issue with his neck post-surgery and I shudder to think what a violent hit might have done to the kid had that warning not surfaced.
he's shut down for this year and will probably go through the steps Peyton did, which is what should have happened from the start.
I never blame the Giants FO for anything, but they majorly fucked this up.
I'm of the opinion that it should be impossible to clear a guy less than 6 months after FUSION surgery. I am no Dr., but I know a few in the sports medicine field. His "recovery" was ridiculously fast.
The Giants should have found a way to IR him, or at the very least PUP him. Not sure what is within the rules, but no one getting fusions surgery should be taking head shots in less than 6 months post-op. Its fucking stupid.

I did not know that his surgeon is a "Giants doctor."
"Shut down" is so vague. For how long? Why?
The lack of clear reporting is so frustrating, mostly because the understanding of the reporters is on the level of "he has a neck injury, he might he paralyzed, he must retire." Plenty of players have come back from serious neck injuries. Lets get some reporting that gets to the bottom of why this is or is not different.

Best of luck to him. He has his health.
Good point.
There is so much more to learn. Wilson went down in a non-contact drill. Clearly he never should have had a full clearance
the final call on what procedure he went ahead with (and the including post-op protocol specific to that procedure) was ultimately on Wilson to make. It's very likely he didn't want "the Peyton" route, even after being fully educated -- far more than any of us on this board -- on all his options.
It sucks the guy's career is pretty much over regardless.
When I interviewed Wilson a few weeks into his rookie season back in 2012, he told me he wanted to be one of the best to ever play the game. We saw a glimpse of his ability in the game against New Orleans that year, but that was it. Now he'll likely never get the opportunity to fulfill his promise. Sad.
He might have opted for the "Peyton" route were he a QB
Possibly.
I'm not even sure what his options were (nor that anyone on this board is, as we don't have access to his medical files), honestly, but I'm pretty sure that the Giants didn't hold him down and force him to get the procedure and follow the recovery plan specific to it that he got as opposed to any other.
The team maybe could have PUP'ed him just to be super extra careful above what they were medically advised to do, but if there was a choice to be made, likely highly qualified doctors provided him with his options and, ultimately, the decision was his, about what was best for his life and his career.
Sounds more like he's just done for the year and they'll reevaluate him later. But they're not holding out much hope that the news will be much better. But kudos to the front office for planning ahead and adding multiple RBs this offseason.
It is sad as he, by all accounts, really wanted to play
However this was not unexpected. Yes we were all hopeful after being cleared by the doctors and the first days of practice but with his injury happening in a non contact drill I would have been suprised if he would been cleared.
The moment you hear about numbness is the time you have to give up football. This was bound to happen unfortunately. Ultimately, I dont think there is no one to blame. To blame doctors who are the best in their field is silly they have no stake in the matter. To blame Wilson who has been an athlete his whole life and told the risks and cleared for activity is not fair. To blame the Giants is dicey also. Should they have shut him down for this year, in retrospect maybe but then in 2015-16 you have a player who hasnt taken any type of contact for almost two years and then you expect him to be in any football shape to contribute. Football is a cruel business and most teams wouldnt hold a roster spot for a player who they are not sure that can play in the long term.
Hope for the best in his future and maybe they will find a position within the organization.
This is starting to remind me of the Jahvid Best career arc
too bad the way things have gone for him.I'm no expert but I wonder how can you ever feel comfortable putting him on the field again, especially as a RB.I think it's time to move on.
Will we get any compensation for him if he is IR'd and then reaches an injury settlement with the team?
I know what spine problems are all about, I am fused from C3 - C7 (you can not fuse any more levels than this), and I have artificial discs at L4/L5 and L5/S1 levels. I had to call it a career at age 55 and I am totally disabled, but at least I had a career, and my company is so great that they rehired me the last 4 years as a consultant, which I now work part time from home, only 8 hours per week. I have had 4 major spine surgeries. This is all due to a degenerative disease. I am wondering if David also has a degenerative disease and was lucky to have gotten hurt when he did or things may have been much worse for him.
for the Kid, it sucks, thank God he's still able to walk. He has a long life ahead of him. I hope he gets past this low point in his life and moves on to bigger and better things. I wish him all the best!!

Everyone is different. Can't compare guys - every injury is different, every guy is different.
I feel for David, I met him when he was first drafted, and he has more heart for the game than most players. I was looking forward to seeing him develop, this is sad news.
I hope he can find success in his life doing something he enjoys, not many people get a start on life like he has had. At least if he's smart he's put some of that $ away and has a bright future ahead of him. Sucks losing such an explosive player.
It's a very bitter pill. (The Jahvid Best comparison is very appropriate).
I've compared him here often to Lesean McCoy (and still do) - his Virginia Tech highlights are spectacular. The only solace is that there have been guys who have come back from severe neck injuries - present Giant Kiwanuka and ex Giant Ike Hilliard.
But of course, he's a young man with his whole life ahead of him, and that's a lot more important than football.
he's shut down for this year and will probably go through the steps Peyton did, which is what should have happened from the start.
I never blame the Giants FO for anything, but they majorly fucked this up.
I'm sure you'll be happy to not only show us your medical diploma, but the notes that show you were involved in his rehab process the entire time, right?
If not, then kindly SHUT THE FUCK UP. You have NO idea what the hell you are talking about ...

Giants.com - Wilson Advised Not To Play Football. He's Done.
Better now than later to finalize this. He's a really impressive person. Hope he uses this as motivation to go on and something else with his life. God bless him.
This is very sad. Wilson is very lucky, he is healthy (just cannot play football anymore). It could be the other way around. He could have been hurt again and it could have been much worse than what happened last season. Wish him nothing but the best.
for him or the Giants. He is financially set for a life outside of football where his neck issue should not restrict him in any way.
As a player he was a project that may or may not have benefited the Giants at some point . Plenty of late round number ones do not stick around for long. I think it was a stretch to view him as an important part of the Giants team this year.
Good luck to him . It is still possible the Giants can land a situational vet RB that can contribute more then Wilson would have given us.
but i'm not in the least bit surprised. As soon as I heard about the injury last week I knew he was done, and I suspect a lot of other people did as well.
I doubt he ever plays again. Very sad for the young man.
Giants likely to add Wilson to IR and then try to reach an injury settlement, unless they can rach an injury settlement first.

you can scratch it no matter what, he's not eligible for PUP
Get back to becoming an olympic sprinter David.
Football can be cruel...what a wasted talent and a damn 1st RD pick too !
Wish him the best in the future.

Asked league source if Giants RB David Wilson's career is over because of latest neck injury. His response: "Most likely."
Best of luck to him. He has his health.
This is sad. Nobody fucked anything up
Seems like a great young man also

Damn our bad luck as well... Chad Jones and now Wilson. Picks that we will never see reach any kind of potential.

To be even clearer, RB David Wilson's season is done w/ the #Giants this season. There is a fear his neck injuries cd be career threatening.

He isn't eligible for PUP, but that's really irrelevant, because even if he was, he shouldn't play again anyway.
He will go to IR, and be released after the year.
Good luck David.

Poor guy. He will have to profoundly reconsider his path in life. All the best to him.
As a selfish fan: c'mooooon Andre Williams!
honestly your health and long term living is more important than football

I don't see how this type of injury, given his history, means anything other than the end of David Wilson's career.
Or what I said last week.

Kenny Phillips.
Yes, he played, but he very clearly was not the same player after the knee diagnosis.
