Not surprising. Shutting down for how long? Forever?

I doubt he ever plays again. Very sad for the young man.

BillKo : 8/4/2014 12:58 pm : link
if he's getting hurt running into someone's back, it was just a matter of time before he took a helmet to helmet and something much more serious happened.

Danny Kanell : 8/4/2014 12:58 pm : link
Feel really bad for the kid.
Sorry to say this again but he's done
RobCarpenter : 8/4/2014 12:58 pm : link

Giants likely to add Wilson to IR and then try to reach an injury settlement, unless they can rach an injury settlement first.
Seems like a good kid
deboGIANTS : 8/4/2014 12:59 pm : link
Hope he takes the injury settlement and leaves the game to lead a good life for himself
Shut down
Phil in LA : 8/4/2014 1:01 pm : link

Fuck. This sucks.
Need more detail
sjh50 : 8/4/2014 1:02 pm : link
Garafolo seems to think it's still not determined how long, so why would there be an injury settlement?

Mike Garafolo ‏@MikeGarafolo 3m
No, that's TBD still, I'm told. But short term, he won't be playing. RT @justin_pelazza: does this mean he will never play again?

Breaking: Source. Giants doctors are shutting down RB David Wilson due to the neck injury that he sustained last year and most recently in camp. There is a belief that the injury could be career ending.
feel bad for him...

this is terrible news...
Not a Surprise
BillyBoy8384 : 8/4/2014 1:05 pm : link
At all ... the minute I heard the team Dr's say they saw damage to the area that was fused I knew he was done, and not for the season, but for good.

Get back to becoming an olympic sprinter David.

Football can be cruel...what a wasted talent and a damn 1st RD pick too !
The sooner he is able
natefit : 8/4/2014 1:05 pm : link
to radically accept that he is never going to be an NFL player, the sooner he will come to find another career that might still keep him around the sport he loves.
he is still eligible for

short term IR

mushroom : 8/4/2014 1:05 pm : link
I feel bad for him(and for all the potential he had for the team) at least he got a nice paycheck to start his life after football.Hope he handled it wisely.
Wish him the best in the future.
obviously feel bad for the kid
nygmen84 : 8/4/2014 1:07 pm : link
but damn, that hurts.
should have done this from the start
UConn4523 : 8/4/2014 1:08 pm : link
as I stated on a previous thread, neck injuries with surgery should have a required time away from football activities. His short recovery was a joke.
Awful news...
Jimmy Googs : 8/4/2014 1:09 pm : link
Maybe he is fortunate though that this re-injury was not some kind of "big hit" that left him paralyzed or something.

Wish him the best.
Best of luck David.
Tittle 9 20 64 : 8/4/2014 1:10 pm : link
Take care of yourself.
Good
Go Terps : 8/4/2014 1:11 pm : link
It's sad but at least he gets to move on with his life in health.
I 100% agree UConn
Giants : 8/4/2014 1:12 pm : link
He never should have had full clearance so soon.
Still doesn't mean he's retiring
UConn4523 : 8/4/2014 1:13 pm : link
he's shut down for this year and will probably go through the steps Peyton did, which is what should have happened from the start.

I never blame the Giants FO for anything, but they majorly fucked this up.

Asked league source if Giants RB David Wilson's career is over because of latest neck injury. His response: "Most likely."
In a weird way that burner he suffered
Rich in L.A. : 8/4/2014 1:15 pm : link
could have been the best thing that ever happened to him. Clearly there was still an issue with his neck post-surgery and I shudder to think what a violent hit might have done to the kid had that warning not surfaced.

Best of luck to him. He has his health.
might be too
Giants : 8/4/2014 1:15 pm : link
late to do what Peyton did but that is what I was thinking from the start. Take the season off, give it time to heal right.

How did the organization fuck this up?

This is sad. Nobody fucked anything up

Seems like a great young man also

Damn ot, it seemed obvious but still SUCKS
Johnny5 : 8/4/2014 1:17 pm : link
I just hope the kid hasn't sustained serious damage that effects his quality of life over the long term.

Damn our bad luck as well... Chad Jones and now Wilson. Picks that we will never see reach any kind of potential.
I agree he is likely done
PatersonPlank : 8/4/2014 1:18 pm : link
Sucks for Wilson, and sucks for the Giants. A 1st round pick down the drain.

I'm of the opinion that it should be impossible to clear a guy less than 6 months after FUSION surgery. I am no Dr., but I know a few in the sports medicine field. His "recovery" was ridiculously fast.

The Giants should have found a way to IR him, or at the very least PUP him. Not sure what is within the rules, but no one getting fusions surgery should be taking head shots in less than 6 months post-op. Its fucking stupid.
Tough break

Good point.
Giants doctors?
Pete in VA : 8/4/2014 1:20 pm : link
I did not know that his surgeon is a "Giants doctor."

"Shut down" is so vague. For how long? Why?

The lack of clear reporting is so frustrating, mostly because the understanding of the reporters is on the level of "he has a neck injury, he might he paralyzed, he must retire." Plenty of players have come back from serious neck injuries. Lets get some reporting that gets to the bottom of why this is or is not different.
As others have said,
Big Blue '56 : 8/4/2014 1:20 pm : link
unfortunately no surprise..

Sending all the best

To be even clearer, RB David Wilson's season is done w/ the #Giants this season. There is a fear his neck injuries cd be career threatening.

Doctors are still learning

Good point.

There is so much more to learn. Wilson went down in a non-contact drill. Clearly he never should have had a full clearance

agree wholeheartedly.
Not
AcidTest : 8/4/2014 1:24 pm : link
unexpected of course, but very sad. Feel bad for him and Franklin. NFL careers are short, but their's were practically nonexistent.

He isn't eligible for PUP, but that's really irrelevant, because even if he was, he shouldn't play again anyway.

He will go to IR, and be released after the year.

Good luck David.
Maybe the Giants should have delayed his return to the field more, but
Riggies : 8/4/2014 1:24 pm : link
the final call on what procedure he went ahead with (and the including post-op protocol specific to that procedure) was ultimately on Wilson to make. It's very likely he didn't want "the Peyton" route, even after being fully educated -- far more than any of us on this board -- on all his options.

It sucks the guy's career is pretty much over regardless.
I share Rich in LA's sentiments
Phil from WNY : 8/4/2014 1:24 pm : link
What seemed unfortunate to him last week may have been the best thing that ever happened to him if he follows the advice of doctors and moves on.
Rigs,
Big Blue '56 : 8/4/2014 1:25 pm : link
He might have opted for the "Peyton" route were he a QB
