Article on Eli in MMQB

Moondwg : 8/7/2014 8:08 am
They finally acknowledged something that we have frustratedly known for a while:

Quote:
a third of Manning’s interceptions were not actually his fault, but rather, a consequence of wide receivers running incorrect routes.

And:

Quote:
Nothing, however, masks weaknesses like a great quarterback. The Giants have one in Manning. Or, they have one capable of exhibiting great traits, at least. Manning is one of the gutsiest, savviest true pocket passers in the league, with an outstanding ability to make strong-arm throws just before absorbing a hit.

As you effectively said, tell me what I didn't already know..
You don't appreciate what you have
Headhunter : 8/7/2014 8:42 am : link
until it's gone and you wait 10-15 years to replace him? Is Eli without blemishes? Of course not, but he is far and away these old eyes have seen watching over 50 years of Giants football
The author appears to be very down on our defense
Millwall_Giant : 8/7/2014 8:45 am : link
which I disagree with. Not saying they are going to be dominant, but I believe they will a significant strength of this team.
Headhunter...you said it...we will not appreciate Eli until he is
MikeN in Ottawa : 8/7/2014 8:48 am : link
retired just like we didn't appreciate Phil until he was gone.

Give Eli time this season and I think he may have his best year yet. That plus a running game and we should be in good shape because I love our D right now.

Still the biggest issue, IMO, is the offensive line. I am not sure JR did enough to improve it. I am hoping I am wrong.
I have to say before camp I was mildly optimisitic
Essex : 8/7/2014 8:48 am : link
about the offense, but that optimism is waning with each passing day. Everything you read from the beat reporters seems to indicate, like last year's camp, that the offense is struggling. For instance, yesterday Graziano, and I know he is harsh, but was saying the offense looked "abnormally competent" and Rock or Stapleton (I forget who) said something a few minutes later that the unusual good play had ended. I realize that not everything will look good at camp, especially when putting in a new system, but you would hope that we would see more positive signs than what has been reported.

On the other hand, all the reports, and this may be a product of what I wrote above, say that the defense looks great. After the dreadful second half of 2012 and last year's dreadful performances, even in wins, I just want to see some good football.
Considering that last year's team was incredibly lucky to go 7-9...
Klaatu : 8/7/2014 8:55 am : link
Nine or ten wins would be a vast improvement, and I'd take it. As I've said repeatedly, be more competitive this year, look to seriously contend next year.
Seems like a very fair analysis of the team
Jimmy Googs : 8/7/2014 8:58 am : link
imo. In fact, he may give the O-line too much credit.
preview seemed oddly reversed
Greg from LI : 8/7/2014 9:07 am : link
Overly optimistic about the offense and overly pessimistic about the defense.

that was my exact thought. Peter King is a terrible analyst.
Peter King truly does suck

But that piece was by Andy Benoit. I don't think he's bad, but that story just seemed off.
Well, we'll see how this season plays out
MetsAreBack : 8/7/2014 9:29 am : link
with the new offensive philosophy.

It's not like most QBs couldnt attribute at least 25% of their INTs to a bad route or some other form of bad luck. Even if you deducted Eli's INTs last year by 1/3, his turnovers were still out of control.

Hopefully we see a lot better this year. And yes, of course hopefully we also see more pocket protection.

Bottom line is last year's performance wasnt worth close to $20 million, so hopefully he puts a lot of negativity to rest this season. It's August... so I'll be hopeful.
while we agree
whobetta : 8/7/2014 9:31 am : link
that many of Eli's INTs are caused by things like WR running wrong routes, it is said without anything backing it up.

that is weird, kind of surprised the facto-nazi's panties haven't ruined their day yet.

And more importantly, he equals Andrew Williams and Peyton Hillis with neither providing quickness or explosiveness..

WHAT? Williams looked the MOST explosive of the backs in the HOF game

wtf
I'v pretty much stopped reading national coverage of the Giants
Reb8thVA : 8/7/2014 9:33 am : link
in the press, particularly about Eli. None of these clowns watch enough Giants games on a regular basis to make a credible and accurate story. They look at statistics, and statistics never tell the whole story. The clowns down here in DC are especially atrocious.

As long as the OL holds and that is still a big if, I am confident that Eli will bounce back and have a monster year, especially if we get the running game going again.

El again has something to prove and I wouldn't ever bet against him in such conditions.
I appreciate Eli
Giants Fan in Steelers Land : 8/7/2014 9:37 am : link
just sayin
The Giants voted with their checkbook
HomerJones45 : 8/7/2014 10:02 am : link
and gave Eli a big bonus and an extension so they didn't need to eat $20 million against the cap because they are so certain that 1/3 of those 27 int's and the iffy completion percentage and the lack of td passes and the #31 qb rating were all the result of receivers running the wrong routes.

Oh wait . . .

That article revealed itself as fish and chips blotter material when the writer presented chipping by the te's and backs as a startling new McAddo innovation.
So 18 INTs were solely his fault?
SB : 8/7/2014 10:34 am : link
...18 INTs would put him 6th worst in the league last year. Still horrible.

He has to play better, and I think he will under the new system. I have no doubt that Gilbride's system always lead to screwed up routes and INTs, and it always would. The hope was that it would result in more big plays than bad plays.
It actually made zero sense for the Giants to extend Eli, regardless
Riggies : 8/7/2014 10:42 am : link
of the season he was coming off of.

They didn't need the money and they didn't even need to restructure (ie put cap money onto future years) other guys to not need it, as they got even more space via the pay cuts Kiwanuka and Weatherford were forced to take.
I think the Defense will
Paulie Walnuts : 8/7/2014 10:43 am : link
actually have to and be able to carry the team for the first few games...

next years #1 rounder has to be a DE
On another note...
Kash15 : 8/7/2014 10:51 am : link
what was with the comment on Moore lol? Immature?
To all...any new offensive or defensive system
MikeN in Ottawa : 8/7/2014 10:56 am : link
will take time, unfortunately. Even Chip Kelly's scheme did not go well for the Beagles last season until the 2nd half. Then it took off...

With the reduced training camp time and so forth, I expect the O to struggle early in the season. Hopefully, that will pick up as the season goes along. This is normal.

The D and, hopefully, special teams need to carry us through the first half of the season and, hopefully, without injuries, the O can progress as we go along.

To expect the offense to take off from the get-go is completely unrealistic

you were obviously dropped on your head as a child
One good thing about Eli sucking
GMenLTS : 8/7/2014 10:58 am : link
It's brought back the horrible awful, shitty, and moronic version of homerjones that shits on Eli at every turn, rationale be damned.

Which means Eli will probably make good 'ol gene look like a dumbass once more. Not that homer doesn't do a good enough job at that already..
.....
SamTheTram : 8/7/2014 11:08 am : link
Jeff hostetler, Dave brown, Danny kannel, kent graham, tommy Maddox, Kerry Collins, Kurt Warner

Qbs we tried but failed at in developing into a top 5 franchise QB since Phil Simms.

The gmen need to ride out Eli until he's ready to retire, because it isn't easy

Fantasy football is what hurts Eli. If he had come up in the 80s or 90s, you wouldn't hear half the criticism
I would hardly call Kerry Collins a failure

Eli Did Not Have Help Last Year
Jeffrey : 8/7/2014 11:11 am : link
from the offensive line, the runnjing backs or the wide receivers. I have ben a big defender of Eli and will always value what he brings to the team, but neither the apologists for Eli nor those who blame him for everything are totally correct in their assessments of last year.

The team sucked last year in almost every phase of the game. Perhaps 1/3rd of Eli's interceptions were not his fault, but that still leaves 18 that were his fault and that is not an acceptable performance either. Eli and just about everyone else needs to pick it up--his inconsistent accuracy is what it is, but he is capable of making better judgments and not trying to make the spectacular play when it is safer to just throw the ball away.

I expect a much better season from everyone, but if it does not happen then even more change is needed.
The offense run by KG required
MikeN in Ottawa : 8/7/2014 11:34 am : link
5 or 7 step drops...basically time to throw. No adjustment was made until November when Eli went to shorter drops and quicker throws. We won a few games in a row then.

Then other teams adjusted and took away the short stuff forcing Eli to either throw into coverage or get killed. He usually got killed.

Add to that the way Nicks was playing, then Cruz got hurt plus no tight end, no running game. You tell me a quarterback in this league who could have helped that situation out. Sure, Eli made mistakes...who wouldn't...but to say he sucked illustrates that people simply do not understand football or are just biased against Eli.

You just made me shoot soda out my nose with this post.
I think we will see Brees/Rodgers type numbers from Eli this year
PatersonPlank : 8/7/2014 3:25 pm : link
Eli was severely handcuffed by the Gilbride offense the last 2 years. We didn't have the talent to run it and Eli became the whipping boy. Every pattern took a while to develop, the OLine couldn't pass block that long or run block to take the heat off, and on most plays Eli had to either take the sack of guess where the WR was going.

I don't believe any QB would have been able to play well last year.
A lot more than 1/3 of the INTs

Well, Eli might bounce back, but I'm taking the under on this one. Brees/Rodgers numbers??? Just because its a new system ?? we marginally upgraded the o-line, replaced Nicks with ODB, and added Jennings, who's at best had an inconsistent career.

We somehow won two SBs with Gilbride... replacing him isnt going to magically turn this offense into a juggernaut... if we're going to win games this year, they are going to be of the 21-17 variety and the offense is going to have to just limit the backbreaking mistakes.
