NFT: Soccer: Transfer & Season Kickoff Thread Part II

Bobby Humphrey's Earpad : 8/8/2014 8:41 pm
Here is the sequel to the archived thread.

Multiple outlets reporting that DeAndre Yedlin moving to Spurs, but will finish the season in MLS first. Here is the Daily Mail link, which quotes Kasey Keller saying he is against the move and that Spurs is the wrong club for Yedlin at this stage.

Also, Barcelona to sign Vermaelen for 15M pounds, while Ibrahim Afellay could go from Barca to Olympiacos.

The championship starts tomorrow in England tomorrow and Ligue 1 started in France with a 2-2 draw between PSG and Reims.

arsenal vs man city
Liverpool v Dortmund.

Sunday morning 7 AM (EDT) on NBC sports network. Also there's a Premier League Countdown show at 9:30 AM (EDT)following the game.
Funny during the WC I was saying how Yedlin reminded me a lot of
nyjuggernaut : 8/9/2014 11:59 pm : link
Kyle Walker, and now he gets to learn from him at Tottenham.

I also found the quote from Kasey Keller to be rather odd considering he played in the EPL and should know first hand how teams need to be at least two deep at each position. Not only do they play 38 reg. season games, but there's also FA Cup matches, League Cup matches, and CL/Europa League games in which Spurs for the most part qualify for at least the latter each season.

Kyle Naughton, who is the current back- up to Walker at Spurs now, appeared in 34 matches last season. And he's now being linked to a potential move to QPR, so Yedlin will get plenty of playing time once he makes the permanent move to The Lane in 2015.
Gunners looking good

Better said, the Citizens' backup defenders looking horrid. No communication and a general lack of awareness of where they and their marks are on the pitch. Oh well, it gives Pellegrini something to work on. Looks like Arsenal's right defensive flanks are struggling as well; nay penetration City has had has been on that side, although I had to turn the match off at the half (chore time, to ensure I get to watch the season kickoff next week uninterrupted).

What I see with Yedlin
Jim in Scranton : 8/10/2014 11:17 am : link
is that he goes out on a series of loans for the next few years, especially to Championship clubs. Since QPR signed Mauricio Isla of Juventus on loan with a view for a permanent, I don't see them going after Naughton now. Especially now, since they are switching to a two wingback formation 3-5-2.

I am not expert, I don't know if this is a good move for him or not. He obviously is not going to see the starting lineup for a few years or so. He is young and is still developing. I don't a problem with him going to Spurs, as long as he knows that he is going to be loaned out and maybe he is ok with that. This is a good move for Spurs and one for the future. He has been linked with QPR and I would have liked to see them sign him, but he probably wouldn't be included in the first team. Like I said, I am not expert, he had a good world cup, so who knows.

If you are going to go on a series of loans, why not just stay in MLS, or transfer to a more technical league? A series of loans to the Championship or even the lower tier of the Premier League is a career-ender. Those coaches are constantly scrambling and are not interested in player development.

I'd rather him go to a more technical league like Germany, Italy, Holland etc.
Alberto Moreno
Kevin in Annapolis : 8/13/2014 8:17 am : link
didn't play in the Super Cup yesterday and is at Melwood this morning. Liverpool finally get their left back.
Yedlin hasn't even been good in MLS this year
Go Terps : 8/13/2014 9:13 am : link
Shows how much research Spurs have done. Nothing like signing a guy on the strength of three matches...none of which he started.

I don't expect this to be a good career move for Yedlin.
Happy with the Moreno pickup being finalized. I like what
BeerFridge : 8/13/2014 9:20 am : link
Liverpool has done on the back line. Manquillo looked great in the friendly against Borussia Dortmund. Moreno is supposed to be even better. And Lovren looked so solid. Now, if they can just get another striker.

Yedlin
JoeyBigBlue : 8/13/2014 4:22 pm : link
In the premier league is a bad decision. Yedlin's strength is his attacking potential as a wingback, something that hasn't quite succeeded in the EPL. He should of went to a good team in Holland, to further develop his technical abilities while improving defensively.
Terps, did you see this?
Bobby Humphrey's Earpad : 8/13/2014 9:04 pm : link
Looks like Deportivo is in the hunt for Mitroglou! He's not going to play for Fulham, just a matter of how much the club wants to lose
Link - ( New Window )
Yeah I did
Go Terps : 8/14/2014 6:34 am : link
I hope it happens because they're pretty bereft at striker and they could really use him. The new president has done a good job of adding players this summer so he might actually make it happen. Staying up this year is a must financially.
I think it's just a matter of time
Bobby Humphrey's Earpad : 8/14/2014 8:41 am : link
Mitroglou needs to play not just for his career, but for the national team - big Euro qualifier with Romania coming up. Magath is focusing on youth - both Ruiz and Mitroglou are just sitting the bench. Mitroglou was also rumored for Bordeaux, but don't know what happened there.

On the bright side, Sokratis Papasthatopoulos shut down Robert Lewandowski as Dortmund beat Bayern in the German Super Cup. Goal.com named him Man of the Match.

He's a strange striker, from what I've seen with Greece he's like a very poor man's RVN (hybrid poacher/target guy), but he's not pure - needs a lot of touches to score. But he got on this roll for Olympiacos and Greece where he was scoring in bunches (especially in Europe) and that drove his stock sky high. Went to Fulham where he got hurt immediately and then England didn't really fit his style. Should be OK in a more technical, slower league.

And THAT is why you don't allow your emerging youg players and national teamers anywhere near the BPL. It's a graveyard for managers with constant turmoil. Jozy should've been counseled to stay the frig away from Sunderland.

No new on Mitroglou, but the Greeks are reporting it's Deportivo or Transanzpor (sp?) in Turkey. It doesn't appear that he nor Ruiz will play a minute for Fulham this season - because when you have Ross McCormack, you're surely set.

Other Greek-Spain news, Samaras has apparently been spotted in Spain and is supposed to sign with Malaga. Pretty happy about this, Spain or Italy were the best moves for him.

It's looking more and more like it's gonna happen
BeerFridge : 8/21/2014 9:22 am : link
Mario is entertaining for sure. Let's hope Rodgers and he get along.

The main thing about Suarez vs Balotelli in the "man-management" thing is that Suarez was a hard worker in training. Wonder if Balotelli can fit in with how Rodgers runs things.

Absolute steal for Liverpool

to get Italy's best striker for 16 million, even if Balotelli is crazy. Even when he was incredibly loco at City he scored 12 goals in 2011-2012, and he's a better player now
he seems more like an immature dope than a bad guy.
BeerFridge : 8/21/2014 11:30 am : link
Still, Liverpool has a good thing going in terms of the team being on the same page. It'll be interesting how they fit Balotelli into all that.

They went up against a really good side. Hull is where hopefully QPR will be next year. And don't forget about the mercurial Moroccan! On paper, it looks good and it is a much different squad than last time. You don't have players looking to only get paid, you have players who want to play. Keeping the core of last years squad was a must.

The Guardian says 60 million pounds, a huge sum when you consider they still need another defender and at least one central midfielder.

Arsenal looks to have lost out on Greek CB Manolas, who is reported to be signing with Roma today for 10+ million pounds. With Giroud looking like he might be out a couple of months, Arsenal has work to do.

Supposedly he told Harry that he did not want to be alone up front, so he tweaked the formation. Goods signing of McCarthy from Reading. I am sure he will take over the number one keeper position soon. Now they are even more thin at center mid with Faurlin done with another ACL injury, plus Simpson supposedly going to Leicester and Treore going to Palace. Going to be another crazy deadline day for Harry.

I really think £6M for Sandro is an absolute steal. Also really happy to have Niko back. I think the premier league will suit him better than the Championship. It's nice to get that first win out of the way 4 months early this time. Don't want to get overconfident, but I think they have enough to stay up and some. I am more confident with Arry at the wheel than Hughesless.

Hull really made some really good moves. They are really going for a top half finish. Really disappointed seeing Warnock go to Palace, but I am not sure if that will be enough. After today, I am going with Palace, West Brom, and Burnley going down.
QPR is a much, much better team now
PatersonPlank : 9/1/2014 11:29 pm : link
The last 10 minutes of the 1st half against Sunderland was the best I have ever seen them play, they looked like Chelsea! I really like Fer, Isla, Mutch, and Caulker, they make a big difference. I also can't wait to see Vargas, and I hear Sandro is just as active. We are still thin at striker, not much beyond Austin and Vargas.

I am going to be in London the weekend of the 13th and plan on buying a QPR jersey with #9 on the back. Can't find that in the U.S.
That was definitely the best
Jim in Scranton : 9/2/2014 1:25 pm : link
I have seen them play in some time. They have a lot of quality, but still worried about what they are going to do upfront. Austin is going to get injured again and I saw that Vargas just got his international clearance. He might turn out to be a steal. Plus Hoillet, Matty Phillips, and the wild card, Taarabt can also play upfront. Can you imagine if he gets his head on straight?

Yeah they only way is to get a top shipped, but I am unsure about sizes. I wanted to get the solid white third kit, because I am just not a big fan of the home and away ones. Really loved last years thick hoops, but I understand why they had to pick from Nike's catalog for the first year. They have a nice blue nike hoodie that I think I am going to order soon.
