McManus vs. Brown

Bold Ruler : Mod : 8/10/2014 10:00 am
Interesting competition here. In my mind, Josh Brown is a serviceable kicker and doesn't have any glaring weaknesses or terrible games that make me want him gone ala Jay Feely after Seattle. But the leg on this McManus kid is so damn intriguing.

To date through camp I think McManus has one more miss (a shank) than Brown. But McManus also has a tremendous leg. He has looked calm and confident kicking in the two preseason games. As others have discussed the potential of having a leg to make a kick that's beyond 35 yards is attractive.

Coughlin always goes with the veteran. So just on that Brown probably wins out. I don't normally get worked up over place kickers but I feel like if we let McManus go he ends up on another team and becomes one of the best in the league.

Thoughts?
I like Brown, but McManus has some serious potential
Giantology : 8/10/2014 10:03 am : link
McManus has kicked a 75 yard field goal in practice. I'd prefer we go with the kid, and I'm rooting for him to win the competition.
The kicker is an afterthought for a lot of people
Gman11 : 8/10/2014 10:04 am : link
until they have to make a field goal to win the game with 3 seconds left.

Either way, I think the Giants make a good choice. With Brown they get a guy with experience. With McManus they get youth and a guy who could be a fixture at the position for many years.

Flip a coin.
Certainly wouldnt be the first time they let a kicker
Curtis in VA : 8/10/2014 10:06 am : link
go who went on to be great some place else.

I personally would like to keep the young guy if he continues to prove himself. Brown is fine but what is he, like 35? Would suck to have to look for a new kicker next year or the year after while McManus is shining with another team.
I agree
mattlawson : 8/10/2014 10:16 am : link
This is one interesting competition. The only downside with not going with a veteran is the track record of a guy like Matt Dodge... So much potential yet.......
McManus will come cheaper than Brown.
George : 8/10/2014 10:18 am : link
Wouldn't be surprised is this comes down to a financial issue.
I think they're both good. I'd go with the kid to eliminate returns
Ira : 8/10/2014 10:21 am : link
and to have the potential for long field goals. But I think Coughlin will stick with the vet.
I'd love to keep McManus.
bceagle05 : 8/10/2014 10:39 am : link
TC taking a kid over a vet though, when the competition is pretty much even? Not likely.
very intriguing competition.......
Simms11 : 8/10/2014 10:53 am : link
I think the first guy to miss in a game is done. The kid has a great leg. Quinn also indicated that McManus would have to do quite a bit to unseat Brown, so it's probably already written in stone, unless Brown screws up in pre-season, which is highly unlikely.
It must be difficult to go with unproven rookie kicker
Jupiter : 8/10/2014 11:01 am : link
If Brown is released, the Giants could lose a couple of games with McManus before they decide to find another veteran kicker on the scrap heap.

to go with a rookie kicker, but I'd hate to see McManus making big kicks for another team. This could be a Matt Bahr/Matt Stover kind of decision. I'd roll the dice with the rookie and hope it doesn't devolve into a Matt Dodge kind of deal (inordinate amount of Matts in this post).
Mcmanus has a future here`

Brown doesnt
McManus
Mr. Nickels : 8/10/2014 11:26 am : link
No brainer he should win the job
Couple games to go, but from what we have all seen on TV
Jimmy Googs : 8/10/2014 11:35 am : link
and heard from practices, I don't have any problem keeping McManus.
It's another 'evolution of the game' type of moment
BlueManFu : 8/10/2014 12:00 pm : link
Look around the league where young guys like Walsh and Zeurlein are regularly hitting from 50 - 56 yards. It's a high percentage 3 points for the offense in that area of the field. Brown can't do that. Hope to see McManus at least get the chance to in preseason games. To me, if he were to hit from 52+ even once, without missing anything else, he gets the job.

With this offense (ability to score a lot of points questionable) and this seemingly sturdy defense, those extra long 3 pointers at a good percentage are big value add.
If the offense struggles can we really expect to consistently get to
Bold Ruler : Mod : 8/10/2014 12:06 pm : link
the 35 for a FG? A long range PK could prove invaluable.
I'd go with McManus
Headhunter : 8/10/2014 12:14 pm : link
if he is Matt StoverII, the Giants have their kicker for the next decade. If he doesn't perform in the regular season, you can have a try out Tuesday and sign a guy like Josh Brown because there are always out of work kickers with NFL experience that are available
Keep McManus
giantsguy : 8/10/2014 12:24 pm : link
If touchbacks count in the evaluation, he seems to have so much leg that even in windy conditions, there will not be too many kick off runbacks. I recommend keeping the kid.
People always intrigued by the new guy.
giantgiantfan : 8/10/2014 12:57 pm : link
I think we should keep Brown and bring back McManus next year. Kicking was not a weakness last year and Brown seems to be the same as last year. Why change that?
McManus won't be around next season...
Toastt34 : 8/10/2014 2:00 pm : link
He'll most likely end up on an NFL roster at some point this season.
If it's close, Brown wins.
kickerpa16 : 8/10/2014 2:10 pm : link
McManus has some leftover bad mechanics from Temple (he's not a rookie) that positional coaches are working on, but he's still not there.

Big leg or not.

As of now, Brown wins comfortably.
McManus
Percy : 8/10/2014 6:22 pm : link
Has to be kept now or lost -- he's too good. He's going to hit one from 60 yards out soon and blows it out of the end zone on every kickoff. Assuming he doesn't fold in the face of real pressure (and surely he's going to see some before the pre-season is over), or suddenly shows material inaccuracy compared to Brown, don't you have to go with the younger guy?
No, not if they are close.
kickerpa16 : 8/10/2014 6:34 pm : link
Kicking under NFL pressure is something that can't be practiced, and the pre-season games don't give a good barometer.

I don't like Brown at all, but he's shown the ability to make the big time kicks if need be. McManus? Who knows.

But I'd rather go with Brown than McManus with a chance to win the Super Bowl...
Kicker, we can pick up Josh Brown midseason if McManus doesn't
David in LA : 8/10/2014 6:35 pm : link
come through. IMO you have to take the chance on talent and coach him up.
It's not guaranteed we can pick him up.
kickerpa16 : 8/10/2014 6:37 pm : link
McManus' technique is still inconsistent. His Temple tape was pretty awful, technique wise.

You play kickers for the immediate season. Brown offers us a better shot.

I'd be all in for stashing McManus on the PS (if eligible), but showing that he's as accurate as Brown and just as adequate on KO's doesn't trump veritable game experience...
Preseason games provide a decent level of pressure
Jimmy Googs : 8/10/2014 9:24 pm : link
when your fighting for a job for the second year in a row. You know McManus is feeling it to a good degree.

May not be like a December game when your team is down 2 points with 1 minute to play but its something...
It is a different type of pressure.
kickerpa16 : 8/10/2014 9:37 pm : link
Oftentimes, people think that different types of pressure affect kickers similarly, but that is not the case.

Look at Nate Kaeding. Able to handle regular season pressure, but wilted in the playoffs.
Gary Anderson too
Jimmy Googs : 8/10/2014 9:48 pm : link
What's the big deal about giving the kid a chance if they are close? Its not like Brown or someone like him won't be around to sign if McManus can't hack it this season.

Well, for some reason it's difficult to project that Brown, a
kickerpa16 : 8/10/2014 10:00 pm : link
vet kicker, would be around.

And secondly, the goal is to make FG's, consistently, from 45 and in.

Brown has shown an ability to do this in actual games. McManus has not. McManus also has the remains of awful technique, meaning that he will miss a couple of makeable kicks.

It's why teams will hold onto vet kickers, even as their distance declines, when their are always strong-legged competitors out there.
All good points, but young unproven kickers
Jimmy Googs : 8/10/2014 10:07 pm : link
win jobs from time to time. Maybe he can get his technique under control more and provide that level of confidence to Quinn.

We need more weapons...

Reminds me of an old adage...
Jimmy Googs : 8/10/2014 10:18 pm : link
Q. Two guys run to first base in the same amount of time. But one guy does it with good, structured form and the other has poor form. Which guy makes the team?

A. The guy with bad form because when he is coached to do it properly he will run it even faster than the first guy.
Of course they do.
kickerpa16 : 8/10/2014 10:18 pm : link
But often times, the teams that do employ the new kickers are either polished (Gostkowski in NE, Tucker in Baltimore), significantly outperform the vet (Tucker), or are part of teams that aren't in win now mode (Legatron).

McManus isn't helped by any of that.

Plus, he's in a system where the long FG's aren't prized as much as 45 and in consistency.

His mechanics, right now, don't scream consistency. Another year of practice, and most likely they will.

He could win the job, but that's not where my money would lie.
And kicking technique is not easy.
kickerpa16 : 8/10/2014 10:19 pm : link
Remember Matt Dodge?

Very feasible he plateaus and his technique can't be corrected further.

Would you want a 75% kicker then?
I expect our D to be better
Jay in Toronto : 8/10/2014 10:25 pm : link
Than our O so field position and long term FGs favour the kid, assuming he doesn't screw up in preseason
Nobody said it was was easy
Jimmy Googs : 8/10/2014 10:28 pm : link
but I don't agree that we can't find a reasonable replacement for either kicker if needed.

Brown is middle of the road. If its close and coaches want to play it safe, then fine. If they give McManus a shot, fine too.

I'm pulling for the kid.
...
kickerpa16 : 8/10/2014 10:30 pm : link
I never said that we can't find a replacement.

I'm pointing out the case for why Brown is likely to win, even though I've always said I don't like him as a kicker.

Nothing about rooting for either or about if he can handle it.

No, but the adage about running technique is absurd for a kicker.

It's not god given talents that make you a kicker. It's all about technique, which isn't acquired easily.

Many kickers can't assimilate the changes.
Well I hope McManus does win

Brown is paid $1MM this year, McManus less than half that.
Such a shitty article.
kickerpa16 : 8/11/2014 1:51 pm : link
Consistency and accuracy come first.

Blasting KO's through the end zone also negates a lot of things.
