Israel Idonije and Robert Ayers Flashed Last Night

Eric from BBI : Admin : 8/10/2014 2:47 pm
The DL of Idonije, Kuhn, Bromley, and Ayers gave the Steelers problems. Ayers looked good at both DT and DE. Idonije looked good too.
I was really surprised
PEEJ : 8/10/2014 2:50 pm : link
by Idonije. He looked pretty spry. I was expecting a worn out plodder.

72 was flashing all over...watching 72 and thinking of Osi while the other end was 91 (Ayers) it was like a few years ago.

I hope Idonije has something left in his tank
would we keep 5 DEs
Mr. Nickels : 8/10/2014 3:04 pm : link
then? Idonije? I think that's the way to go

Hankins Jenkins Bromley Patterson Kuhn (Quarles)

We have 5 DTs too though Patterson and Quarles have yet to play..

It is looking like Quarles can be a safe practice squad stash so far though I had high hopes for him.
Nice to see,

but how much of that was veterans whooping up on roster-fodder depth OL?
Ayers
Ron From NYC : 8/10/2014 3:45 pm : link
Agreed, he flashed. Looked like he got dinged towards the end of the 1st half & eventually left the game.
I didn't think Ayers looked so good inside.

But I'll have to watch the game again.
Ayers is better than he gets credit for
BillT : 8/10/2014 3:49 pm : link
He's going to be a solid contributor in the DE rotation and in 3/4 DE packages. I don't think they will keep Idonije over Patterson or Kuhn so 4 DE and 5 DTs.

On one play at DT, he blew past the guard and forced an incomplete pass.
I think Stanton is a interesting practice squad type
Defenderdawg : 8/10/2014 4:00 pm : link
Keeping in mind the Broha's and Tracy's but he has some athleticism to work with.
I'll take your word for it, Eric.
Klaatu : 8/10/2014 4:03 pm : link
I'm going to watch the game again, tonight.
Not sure why anyone is surprised about who they bring in.

The Giants are not stupid, they research as best as they can, the best depth fits for the team and if they stay healthy, usually conteibute in spot duty..Sure, when they lose 10 RBs at a time, they're gonna be desperate as any team would be, but on balance they know what they're doing a good deal of the time. They're not perfect, but thankfully, they don't react like fans do..

injuries, there's no room for Idonije.
I think Idonije is insurance
BillT : 8/10/2014 4:12 pm : link
They want 4 DE who can contribute. If Kiwi or Ayers were to go down he'd be there. Otherwise, I think he's one too many.
There was time in long ago Giants history when Idonije

Would have been welcomed with open arms, the way Jim Prestel, Maury Youmans, Jim Colvin, Sam Silas, Clark Miller, Frank Parker, John Johnson, Jim Norton, and Roland Lakes were...in 2014 barring injuries, not so much.

Stanton flashed more the last game, but he did have another sack in this game.

Kerry Wynn made some noise late from the strongside end spot.

Is a good , physical disruptive player. He can play DT too. Surprised he was available
On running plays...
Eric from BBI : Admin : 8/10/2014 4:32 pm : link
fans often look at who makes the tackle, but you need to also look who forces the back into the hands of the defender. On one play, Idonije split a double-team and forced the back wide where another defender made the play.
DL
Sammo284 : 8/10/2014 4:34 pm : link
is going to be interesting to watch. It will be a much different DL and style than we've been used to probably. But they do have versatility and depth, the issue is how that plays out on the field and over the long haul of the season.

I have been encouraged by the play of the kids
pganut : 8/10/2014 4:36 pm : link
...from the Virginia schools, Wynn and Stanton. Both have "flashed" in the games so far.
Any way he can get time with 1s now?

It's one thing to eat up backups...
Of all the UDFA DE's
Defenderdawg : 8/10/2014 4:38 pm : link
I would have thought the one that would have flashed would be the end from Georgia Tech, living in these parts, they have players that seem to fall under the radar and surprise in the pros, but Stanton is one that has been at least mildly interesting...
Idonije's wheels impressed me.
arcarsenal : 8/10/2014 4:45 pm : link
Didn't think he still had that giddyup.
I agree
ChicagoMarty : 8/10/2014 4:49 pm : link
Was very happy with Ayers play
D looks pretty good
Kicking looks very good
Nassib pretty good
Jennings and Williams look terrific
It's still early but I see improvement from last season in many areas

The key of course will be whether Eli can cut down on his turnovers

Too soon to tell yet
Agree, Defenderdawg,
clatterbuck : 8/10/2014 5:53 pm : link
add Jack Gregory, Jerry Shay,to your list and there are others I can't remember at the moment.

bc4life : 8/10/2014 6:18 pm : link
yep, too bad there's no room for him.
If we can actually maintain the football this year
Lionhart28 : 8/11/2014 9:44 am : link
I expect the defense to be better just because they may actually get a break once in a while (personnel improvements not withstanding)
Direct roster competition will create this effect
JonC : 8/11/2014 9:51 am : link
I'd agree Ayers holds an edge on making the team, II is less likely as they're more apt to keep five DTs with Jenkins being able to take reps at DE.
