Is Trindon Holliday making this team?

Mike in Long Beach : 8/11/2014 11:08 am
Such a weird situation here. Rarely can I recall a scenario with our G-Men where there has been such a divide from fans and pundits alike. Usually if there is a debate on whether or not a player should make the roster, the player in question is either the last one on or the first one out.

In Holliday's case, those who think he has an opportunity to be a tremendous playmaker on special teams root for him to be a lock, and those who don't have him as far down as NINTH on our WR depth chart (behind the likes of Washington, Harris, Parker and Manningham).

Manningham's disappearing act this summer has helped Holliday's chances, but Holliday's hammy injury hasn't given him the opportunity to prove what he's capable of yet, either.

My gut feeling is it'll be Cruz, Randle, Jernigan, Beckham, Washington and Holliday... with Harris, Parker and Manningham getting the boot.. but that's just me. In, fact, I saw one roster projection on ESPN where Holliday wasn't even listed as cut! He was just disregarded entirely as a possibility.

I haven't really picked up on a BBI consensus. Is there one? And if so.. what the heck is it?

would say no. Neither him or MM. But it was always a given that some of the veteran FAs wouldn't make the final 53. There just isn't enough room. The same is true for other teams. The final cut down will have a number of veteran players. The good news for these players is that they will be the first to be called during the season when injuries happen. Some may even have multiple suitors.
Depends

on how many WR's they keep. I can't remember if the Giants kept 5 or 6 last year. If it's 5, then he is in trouble with the emergence of Washington. If 6, I think he makes it.
He's the best returner on the team.
Curtis in VA : 8/11/2014 11:14 am : link
He'll probably make the team for the same reason Marcus Harris and Corey Washington probably won't.

Special teams.
100% yes
M in CT : 8/11/2014 11:15 am : link
he will make the team as the 6th or 7th WR (and clear cut punt returner) (yes, we may keep 7 WRs).

and no, i don't think we'll keep 3 QBs.
Not sure
pjcas18 : 8/11/2014 11:15 am : link
I have to think it's 50/50.

as just a punt returner I doubt it.

if it means keeping corey washington or holliday I'm not sure just punt returning is enough to warrant keeping Holliday.

Unless he's devin hester-like (who returned kicks, punts, played some WR (and DB until he failed there).

He should

But with Quinn's blocking "schemes" both he and Demps may be wasted.
He's too much of a special teams weapon ...

To cut.

I do agree on your receiver list. The most amazing development could be this kid, Washington - if he keeps making plays ….

If Harris and Washington don't make the team - I for one will be livid.
very unlikely
M in CT : 8/11/2014 11:26 am : link
that both Harris and Washington make it.

i think Soup is headed for the practice squad, personally. Washington is just too much of a weapon to expose.
I hope so. With an offense that may struggle a lot
Jimmy Googs : 8/11/2014 11:27 am : link
converting first downs, the Giants are going need special teams to be able to win field position, and do whatever they can to put points up on the board.

Holliday, Demps, McManus and Bowman could all be key contributors this season witht their roles on ST.
Rule changes have minimized the chances for big KO returns
mfsd : 8/11/2014 11:28 am : link
thus minimizing the value of a pure KO return man.

Punt returns are as much about ball security as anything else.

SO...Holliday better damn well prove he can secure the ball, if he wants to prove it's valuable to have a pure return man on the roster that doesn't contribute anywhere else on the field
He is one TD return away from making the team, and one fumble away
Marty in Albany : 8/11/2014 11:30 am : link
from a ticket to Palookaville.
he likely is
GIANTSr01 : 8/11/2014 11:30 am : link
"9th on the depth chart" at WR. But he wasn't signed to be a major contributor as a WR. He was signed for his return ability.

The Giants will likely keep 6 WRs (with the DB depth, I see an extra DB over a 7th WR if there's an "extra" spot). With that in mind, here are the locks:

Cruz
Beckam
Randle
JJ

As of now, I'd give Harris the edge as the #5 WR and then the last spot comes down to special teams contributions, either as a gunner or returner. The longer Holliday sits out, the more he gives someone else a chance to "steal" that 6th spot. Lucky for him, I'm not sure anyone has really emerged as a PR.

Getting hurt has certainly
Peter from CT : 8/11/2014 11:32 am : link
hurt his chances. Needs to prove ball security. Hard to do that when you don't play .
I'd say no
bc4life : 8/11/2014 11:36 am : link
If they keep 6 - the obvious 4 + Harris and Washington
we may just need to keep 7 WRs
mattlawson : 8/11/2014 11:36 am : link
If Herzlich makes it and Washington or Harris does not - I'm pissed
another twist
GIANTSr01 : 8/11/2014 11:38 am : link
would be ODB returning and showing something as a PR. If he shines as a PR, that could signal the end for Holliday and open the door for both Harris and Washington to make the team at WR.
I had high hopes.
Randy in CT : 8/11/2014 11:39 am : link
But if he can't play, he won't make his case against a solid group of WRs.
what if he can and those shallow crosses he tears it up?
mattlawson : 8/11/2014 11:40 am : link
id like to actually see how he might be used. could be a like a darren sproles kind of weapon for us.

Very true, and Coughlin showed in Randall's rookie year that he has no problem letting a first-year wideout take on that responsibility.

Great post by msfd too.. the fact that kick returns are being phased out are--almost literally--cutting a guy like Holliday's value in half.

Agree that KRs are practically worthless with the rule change
Bob in Newburgh : 8/11/2014 11:42 am : link
With Holiday being so small as to be practically worthless as anything other than a PR, I believe he only makes the team if Coughlin can find no one else to safely field punts.
It's not looking good for him

Harris does have the edge because he's a special teams gunner as well as a pretty good wideout. The real difference though is that Washington is really our only tall WR option.

the only way I could see yes would be if taylor and behre show enough to not need demps at S. then I could see him maybe pushing demps off the roster.

Harris has been around a while
pjcas18 : 8/11/2014 11:54 am : link
unless I'm confusing him he was a rookie in 2011 and didn't stick anywhere. He played in the arena league for a while (not that there's anything wrong with that).

Washington is a UDFA 2014, so teams just didn't know what he is yet and of course everyone is enticed by the mismatch of the tall WR - see Ramses Barden (not that Harris is short).

Great question
DavidinBMNY : 8/11/2014 11:54 am : link
If he can't get on the field he probably won't make the team. That said with Wilson retired, Holliday + JJ to a lesser extent are the "speed bugs".

I think he's on the bubble, but the person I think is less likely to make the team is Charles James who looked terrible on his chance at PR.
If Holliday making the team means we lose
LI NHB : 8/11/2014 12:02 pm : link
Harris or Washington, then i'd prefer him not to. We have capable return men and I think both Harris and Washington have the tools and deserve a shot.

I'd like to see Charles James
Southern Man : 8/11/2014 12:08 pm : link
...make the team. He's been great in practice and is a good locker room guy. The fact that he muffed the punt just means you don't have him returning punts, we have other options and that was never his primary role.
No
BillT : 8/11/2014 12:10 pm : link
Holliday has shown he has no place in the offense and he won't make it a a PR only. Harris is a lock and probably pushing Jernigan for the #4 spot. Washington is probably more likely to make it than either Holliday or Manningham a this point.

Did I miss Holliday actually practicing/playing? How did he show he has no place in this offense?

He may not have actually shown it, but it's not like he's some youngster. He's 28 years old, 5' 5" on his tip toes and he has a career 2 receptions.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's given a chance and shows why he's never stuck anywhere with his blazing speed at WR.

He's electrifying as a KR, and maybe also as a punt returner, but if there are other options I think it woul dbe hard to justify his roster spot.

I like Harris, but your use of the word "lock" here is... liberal.. to say the least.

exactly. who else is going to scare an opposing defense in the red zone right now? Washington is the only guy we have - tight ends included - who can actually go up for a jump ball and come down with it regularly.

i would be utterly shocked if he doesn't make the team.
I just have a hard time
beatrixkiddo : 8/11/2014 12:21 pm : link
seeing him making it over either Harris or Washington. Both of these guys have shown more than our starters as WR's through training camp and pre-season. They have upside and size which we don't really have anywhere else on this Offense. I think Washington is making a case for himself as a legitimate redzone target, he offers more in size and ability than any of our crumby TE's do.
Like I said
BillT : 8/11/2014 12:21 pm : link
I think he a lot closer to the #4 spot than the #7 spot. That's close enough to lock.
an "electrifying" KR/PR
GIANTSr01 : 8/11/2014 12:22 pm : link
is easily worth a roster spot as the 5th/6th WR.
IMO - He has to beat out Beckham
Reale01 : 8/11/2014 12:22 pm : link
As a punt returner by enough that they decide to keep him over James.

Lots of factors:
Washington and Harris performance make it easier to justify using Beckham on punt returns.
Bromley performance opens up possibility of only 4 DTs
Versitility of LBs and depth at safety mean we may only keep 5 (assuming Beason is 100%)
Health at CB (knock wood) means we may keep only 5. James and McBride in battle. James could go to PS.
Hosely's poor performance make him a lot less attractive as insurance.
I should add
GIANTSr01 : 8/11/2014 12:24 pm : link
that no one else has really shown themselves to even be above average as KR/PR. JJ muffs every other punt. Randle is ordinary. ODB hasn't been healthy. James muffed a punt. Demps is a solid KR, but I'm not sure if he's even gotten a lot of chances as the PR.

who is closer to the #4 WR? Holliday?

Don't you have to ask yourself then how a guy who in 5 seasons caught 2 passes is somehow the #4 WR on a team expected to run some 4 WR sets?

It might happen that way, I obviously don't know everything, but I'd be shocked.

I think it's more likely Holliday makes the team as the KR/PR and never lines up at WR even once, than he suddenly becomes the 4th WR. And as I said previously I think it's only 50/50 he even makes the team.

if he can't get on the field he makes it an easy decision.

Which DT are they cutting?
If they go with 4 DT
beatrixkiddo : 8/11/2014 12:34 pm : link
I'd guess Patterson is the odd man out. Bromley has looked very well for a rookie DT, but it is still very early. I think it's likely they carry 9 DL all together, either an 5th DT or a 5th DE.

What's interesting is I have noticed that they have been using DE's as DT and DTas DE's in this pre-season (moving them all over the line, I know I saw Moore and Ayers play inside, and I saw Bromley play on the outside at least once). The DT position is pretty clear as to who they would keep if 5, I think there is good competition at DE, and it may be there that they look to add another body. My guess is JPP, Moore, Kiwi, Ayers, and Wynn if they go with 5 DE.
I can't see them only keeping 4 DTs

It's basically a cornerstone of this defense to be able to roll in and out a steady rotation of defensive linemen.
