Plaxico Burress at Giants camp today

The last time Plaxico Burress visited the Giants, he left knowing he was unwanted. This time he was welcomed back, and possibly for good.

The controversial receiver and one of the heroes of Super Bowl XLII was a surprise guest at Giants practice on Tuesday in what was believed to be his first visit to his old team since 2011. He spent time chatting with fans and some of his former coaches. At one point he even huddled with receiver Mario Manningham and new director of player development David Tyree, forming a trinity of the franchise’s greatest Super Bowl icons.

He also spoke briefly with Tom Coughlin after he watched most of practice from the sidelines in the rain.

It's actually revisionist to pretend there was legitimate, serious desire for him to come back to the team back then.

This. And I wanted him, was disappointed the Giants didn't make more of a push for him.
the fact that the jets had more interest than the giants

Does not mean the giants did not have interest. Thats a big logical leap

Is tying yourself in knots to try to satisfy some weird need to boast "we broke up with him"

We offered him a deal. He didnt accept it. There was no reason to offer him a deal if we didnt want him to say yes. These are the facts. Everything else is intellectual gymnastics

Oh please. I don't give a shit whether they wanted him or not, whether they "won" the break-up with him or not.

Pretending Plaxico was ever going to take a deal that would have left him susceptible to not making it through his first year back in the NFL, especially with how he viewed the team as treating him previously, or that this team is above PR token offers (because they're too classy, old school, or whatever nonsense some cling to in their desire for the franchise to be superior to the rest of the league) is what is silly.
It's was
NYBEN : 8/13/2014 11:56 am : link
a business move ..they wanted him but at their price and on their terms. He didn't agree and he went on to put up hall of fame type number with the Jets ...oh wait. Remember when this was another one of Jerry Reese's "big mistakes", letting Plax go to the Jets. Leaving the Giants with no proven WR's....LOL!!
they are above token offers
MarshallOnMontana : 8/13/2014 11:57 am : link
Not because they are too classy or old school. But because the concept is fucking stupid. You dont offer someone a contract you hope they dont take. Say it out loud

the giants were making an offer they surely felt had at least achance
Not about clinging to any desire to think the team is above others.
Ten Ton Hammer : 8/13/2014 11:57 am : link
Show me where they have a history of playing games with misleading or fake contract offers. They don't bring in players just for the hell of it.

If we're going make declarations about their business practices, it's perfectly reasonable to stand on their reputation.
So did he...

They had more interest than 30 other teams did. Plax only got 2 offers if im not mistaken
MOM,
Dave in Hoboken : 8/13/2014 12:16 pm : link
That's because those other 30 teams had literally had no interest. The contract the Giants offered him wasn't even guaranteed. Like not even a penny of it. Where as the Jets guaranteed him $3.017 million dollars. They (the Giants) could have cut him in camp.
Dave.....
BillKo : 8/13/2014 12:20 pm : link
I'm sure the Giants were hesitant because he spent two years of inactivity and was an older player.

That's usually how it works, those types of players get make good contracts........you have to show us to get paid.

The Jets, conversely, are mismanaged and their contract offer proved to be a bad decision. Plax didn't really play well in 2011.

He should have been given a sentence of community help for 2 years i.e.

His incarceration cost him part of his career and also cost the taxpayers 100s of thousand of dollars.

The other atrocity was the carrying of the gun back to Jersey by his teammates which broke 2 sate laws and a federal law.

Plax being at camp only shows the existing roster that players are always welcome back as the Giants family.

Easy to say they made a token offer for him to have some leverage
jcn56 : 8/13/2014 2:26 pm : link
but that ignores the fact that he could've taken said offer and they'd have to honor it. I'm sure they would've taken him back on their terms, which he ended up deciding weren't good enough.

In a way, I think he screwed himself, because I think he could have lasted an extra year or two here than he did with that trajectory.

He had the Giants, Jets and Pittsburgh ...
Jets - 3 Million - Guaranteed
Giants - 4 Million total - 1 million make team - 0.5 million play all games 2.5 million do good things (incentives) - no guarantee
Pittsburgh- not well known but - approx 7 million - 2 years 1.5 million guaranteed ...

He took the least total money but the most guaranteed money
and had a decent 45 catch season with the Jets ... then off to oblivion with a short Pittsburgh stint ...

I think our show me deal was fine but Plax was also smart to take the most up front guananteed money as he really didn't know where his skills were either ...

Burress’ Chevy Avalanche was seized by cops on the morning of Aug. 20, 2005, after men inside the pickup fired shots when it got stuck behind a garbage truck in The Bronx.

The driver and a passenger fled on foot when a cop car arrived, but officers nabbed the two other passengers. Cops also recovered at least one handgun that was tossed from the vehicle when the patrol car rolled up.
Quote:
The car dealer, Frederick Laurenzo, said he allowed Burress to borrow the vehicle, valued at more than $36,000, in exchange for Burress agreeing to sign autographs at promotional events.

But Laurenzo filed a civil complaint in September 2006 seeking restitution and accusing Burress of breach of contract because he never showed up to sign autographs and let someone else drive the vehicle. Laurenzo said Burress made no effort to help him get the damaged vehicle back.

After Laurenzo put a lien against Burress' house in Virginia, the sides agreed to an arbitration. A three-lawyer panel awarded more than $22,000 to Laurenzo last year, but Burress appealed.

Burress' lawyer in the vehicle dispute, Matthew T. Croslis, acknowledged Tuesday that Burress is responsible for some damages.

Quote:
When Plaxico Burress signed with the Giants in 2005, he wanted the No. 17 jersey worn by punter Jeff Feagles. So Burress and Feagles struck a deal: Burress would get No. 17 in exchange for paying to have some work done on Feagles’ house.

But five years later, Feagles says Burress never did pay up.

Feagles told SI.com that he tried talking to both Burress and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, about it, and neither one of them would honor the commitment Burress made.

“I never got paid for it,” Feagles said. “I asked [Burress] for it. Every time I went to Drew he said, ‘That’s between you and Plax.’ Bottom line, I never got paid. He basically stole my number.”
Quote:
Burress had this to say to Men's Journal about Coughlin:

“After my situation happened, I turned on the TV, and the first words out his mouth was ‘sad and disappointing,’ ” Burress said. “I’m like, forget support—how about some concern? I did just have a bullet in my leg.

“And then I sat in his office, and he pushed back his chair and goes, ‘I’m glad you didn’t kill anybody!’ Man, we’re paid too much to be treated like kids. He doesn’t realize that we’re grown men and actually have kids of our own.”

Burress claims that he is paid too much to be treated like a kid. No, you're just paid too much as all professional athletes are and you have lost perspective of the world we all live in.

What is his reply to criticism?

“What are you doing now? You still mad at your job? You still angry about your life? ’Cause I’m back living my life and enjoying my family while you’re still doing the same thing.”
And the list goes on and on....

It was 2002 when Burress, then playing for the Steelers, hired Malin, a home inspector, to look over a house he was buying in suburban Pittsburgh.

Malin quoted Burress a price of just under $500 and got the job.

He should've turned it down, Malin now says.

When it came time to pay the bill, Burress disappeared. He didn't respond to phone calls or letters. Malin appealed to one of the star's handlers for help, but still no payment. Malin filed a lawsuit, Burress ignored it.

After a judge ruled against the no-show NFL player, he sent Malin a check for $700.

"I got a note from Plaxico saying, 'Sorry for the inconvenience. Please inform the court that the judgment has been paid,' " Malin said.

"Then the check bounced."
Quote:
The Associated Press found that, since Burress joined the NFL in 2000, he has been sued at least nine times by people who said he failed to pay a debt, damaged their car or didn't pay his taxes.

The people seeking payment from the football star run the gamut, from a Pennsylvania homeowners association trying to collect delinquent dues to a Florida woman whose car Burress rear-ended while driving without insurance. Why? He hadn't paid the premium.

The pattern of irresponsible behavior extends beyond unpaid debts, records show.

In his hometown of Virginia Beach, Va., Burress has been fined for reckless driving, noise and public intoxication, and threatened with arrest after he didn't show up in court. Last year in Florida, where he has a home, police twice cited Burress for speeding in the weeks before the car crash, which also earned him a ticket for careless driving.
Quote:
Police visited his house in Totowa, N.J., twice last year on domestic dispute calls. His wife was granted temporary restraining orders both times, only to later request they be lifted, according to court records.
Quote:
"This is a history of him just doing anything he wants to do," said Brian Van Dusen, a Pittsburgh nightlife promoter who sued Burress in 2005 over a debt.

Van Dusen said he had a falling out with Burress midway through the 2004 season, his last in Pittsburgh before he signed with the Giants as a free agent.

The two men had been partners in staging a series of Monday night parties at a Pittsburgh bar featuring Steelers stars, but at some point, according to the promoter, Burress stopped paying his share of the bills. Finally, Van Dusen presented him with an invoice.

"He was drinking. He was talking to the girls. And he ripped it, balled it up, and threw it across the bar!" Van Dusen said. The two men nearly got in a fight, but Van Dusen said he took Burress to court instead and won a judgment when Burress didn't show up for trial. Van Dusen said he ultimately collected only a portion of his expenses.
And last December....

Plaxico Burress' pit bull attacked a woman outside his Totowa mansion, a lawsuit alleges.

Gina Boulougouris Stasinos suffered "series and permanent" injuries to her head, body and limbs, according to the suit, filed in Passaic County Superior Court Nov. 6.

NJ.com couldn't reach Burress or his attorneys for comment.

Stasinos' lawyer, Rochelle Park-based Barry Epstein, said Burress wasn't home at the time of the attack, and that he might have been attending football-related workouts.

"Nevertheless," Epstein said, "it's his dog and he still has a responsibility to properly exercise supervision over it and take proper precautions."

Sure there are people (especially high profile rich) who are targets for hold-ups, like Steve Smith was (which prompted the incident). But does that mean you have to carry "heat", no that's why you get yourself a body guard.

Plaxico goes into that bar with a gun knowing how anal NY is about guns (not Arizona), takes it out and shoots himself (fortunately not someone else) …

Bloomburg does what any self-respecting politician will do - seize the opportunity to pile-on.

Sure, Plaxico is feeing regretful about spoiling the Giants chance to go to another Super Bowl. But what is a lot more shameful, and what nobody around here wants to remember - how the whole team QUIT (except for Brandon Jacobs) against the Eagles in the subsequent play-off game. THAT is what's totally shameful.

Rather than be a stand-up guy, Plaxico dragged a lot of other people into the mess, who could've been prosecuted for participating in a cover-up (and Antonio Pierce could've been prosecuted for transporting the gun across state lines). As it was, the doctor who treated him was suspended for failing to alert police and signing off on medical papers identifying him by a phony name, sources said yesterday

From the NY Daily News (Dec. 4, 2008)....
Quote:
Giants brass admitted Wednesday they knew Plaxico Burress accidentally shot himself minutes after it happened - but the team didn't report the incident to police for at least eight hours.

Even as team execs tried to distance themselves from the coverup of early Saturday's nightclub shooting, investigators turned up the pressure by revealing they will subpoena cell phone records from Burress and teammate Antonio Pierce.

The Giants acknowledged for the first time that Pierce - who was with a bleeding Burress at the Latin Quarter - called Ronnie Barnes, the team's vice president of medical services, moments after his teammate's illegal gun accidentally went off around 1:50 a.m.

Barnes told Pierce to rush Burress to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell Medical Center and the receiver arrived at its emergency room just after 2 a.m., the Giants said in a vague, carefully worded statement.

The Giants said Barnes wanted Burress near the Hospital for Special Surgery, which is next door to New York-Presbyterian.

The Giants said Dr. Mark Drakos, an orthopedic fellow at HSS who has provided "support" for the team "happened to be" on call that night. He, in turn, called Barnes "to make certain he was aware of the situation."

The team said Drakos examined Burress and made recommendations. Emergency room Dr. Josyann Abisaab, who - even though she was not scheduled to work - showed up at the hospital minutes after the receiver. She has since been suspended for not reporting the gunshot wound to the police, as is required by law. Sources said cops are anxious to speak to Drakos.

Giants officials have said they notified NFL security about the shooting sometime after 10 a.m. and that the league told police.

Mayor Bloomberg has contradicted that, saying the NYPD did not learn about the shooting until seeing TV reports that afternoon.

"The Giants should have picked up the phone right away as good corporate citizens," an irate Bloomberg said Monday.

Investigators believe Abisaab was called to the hospital - possibly by the Giants brass - and instructed to handle the star player "gently" since he was "frantic," law enforcement sources said.

The Giants denied contacting the doctor or having asked her to keep the shooting from police, saying Barnes only briefly spoke with Abisaab in the emergency room.

"The Giants have not had any relationship with Dr. Abisaab, and we have no knowledge of any of our players being treated by Dr. Abisaab before Saturday morning," the team's statement read.

Detectives also want to interview Pierce, who practiced Wednesday and will play against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.

Cops have impounded Pierce's SUV. The linebacker - who is considered the captain of Big Blue's defense - is planning to meet with investigators by early next week, his lawyer said.
