Giants Pre-Season Offensive Ineffectiveness Overstated

Corey : 8/15/2014 11:18 am
A number of sports writers have either overtly stated, or strongly implied that things are not looking good for the starting offense in light of the first two pre-season games. While it is true that the first-team unit has not lit up the scoreboard, this is hardly indicative of their potential, or even strongly correlated with how they will perform during the regular season. One has only to glance through the box scores of the other teams in the league to notice that very few starting units are having grand success.

Giants HOF game 1st quarter - 7
Giants Week 1 game 1st quarter - 7

First Quarter Scoring During Week 1 of pre-season:

Colts - 3
Jets - 3
Patriots - 0
49'ers - 3
Ravens - 7
Seahawks - 0
Broncos - 7
Cowboys - 0
Chargers - 0
Dolphins - 7
Falcons - 7
Bills - 3
Panthers - 0
Bucs - 0
Jags - 7
Raiders - 0
Eagles - 0
Bears - 7
Saints - 3
Rams - 7
Browns - 3
Lions - 3
Steelers - 3

The only teams to score double digits:

Redskins - 10
Bengals - 10
Chiefs - 17
Vikings - 10

This is a long way of saying, pre-season doesn't mean a whole hell of a lot.

I HOPE PEOPLE READ THIS POST RIGHT HERE.

More BBIers really need to start listening to Big Blue Kickoff Live. Any of the recent ones, but especially yesterday's episode.

Paul Dottino has been stating over and over to stop paying attention. Just stop. Most of what we are seeing right now we will never see again. He said it is unlike any preseason campaign he has ever seen, after decades of watching practice.

To be specific, the majority of plays that are being called, the QB's have been given instruction that even if when reading the defense they realize the play will not work, run that shit anyway.

They are compiling data. Figuring out which players run what best. Figuring out if certain plays will even work well enough in-game.
Many of us have been preaching this

about the preseason offense. But I still have concerns on what the offense will look like when the season begins. The offensive line is weak and the WR's are unproven. I think RB has been upgraded and Eli will rebound from last year but Beatty at LT is a question mark and no one is impressing me so far on the revamped OL. The new WCO scheme is new to the Giants but not to the rest of the NFL. I really don't expect we will be surprising anyone. Giants need improved play from the TE's and OL and Beckham needs to get on the field before season begins and make some plays. I don't care about points or wins but I don't expect Giants will magically improve in Detroit overnight either.

Agreed, Zog,
CT Charlie : 8/15/2014 12:17 pm : link
even after 5 preseason games.

I consider most of this season as a trial run for next season. We need to establish a new offensive scheme this season, shore up the O-line and TE position over the winter, and prepare to put a championship-caliber team on the field in 2015-16.

We might even make the playoffs this year, but I doubt we're deep enough (or dominant enough on defense) to go far.
I can appreciate what we're saying here
JFIB : 8/15/2014 12:19 pm : link
And agree whole heartedly that we can't put too much stock in pre-season performance. The thing that's so scary are the practice reports coming out of camp. The lack of success of the offense throughout camp, the alarming rate of interceptions by all the QB's and the absence of good play from the OL, TE and WR positions is causing some concern.
Yeah but they look horrid in camp too

Concern? For real?
Plenty of cause for concern over the offense.
BrettNYG10 : 8/15/2014 12:32 pm : link
A new line with our LT coming off both a horrific injury and season (even though I think he'll be fine), no proven workhorse back (again, think we'll be okay here), questions at WR/TE, and a QB who hasn't been good in over a season and a half - and is in a new offense.

Of course, that's the pessimistic POV - the truth will probably lie in the middle. I tend to think we'll have an average-ish offense this year (with it improving as the season progresses) but don't have much confidence in that assessment.

With that said, the preseason performance doesn't raise those concerns. I think we'll be okay.

but this idea that we can take nothing away from pre-season and practice reports is ridiculous.

There is no magic switch that gets flipped before game 1.

Obviously there is game-planning that will affect how we look in the reg season versus pre-season... but there are many aspects of pre-season as a whole that can and should be considered a good indicator of what we can expect in the reg season.
Maybe the Giants' defense

We might be horrible this year for all I know. Dottino of course is walking the company line a bit here, but it still gives a reason why it's pointless for any of us to sit in a dark corner and cut ourselves over Eli not having a TD pass after the first two preseason games.
Yep agree. However, I would like to see a few targets to
Jimmy Googs : 8/15/2014 1:27 pm : link
Cruz and Randle though tomorrow night.

And I typically go to the bottle of gin over the knife/dark corner thing anyway...
I basically agree but one thing concerns me:
Bobby Epps : 8/15/2014 1:28 pm : link
in PRACTICE all 3 QBs are throwing a lot of INTs.

So, are the DBs that good? Are the QBs and WRs on the same page? Is Randle really a good #2 WR? Why is BrownCruz having so much trouble beating Thurmond? Why is Charles basically a turn-stile against JPP and having trouble with other DEs? What's up with Mario not getting separation? When will Beckham show us something?

About pre-season games, I have 2 objectives: no one gets hurt and we evaluate what players can and cannot do, that is, smarts, strength, technique, speed, quickness, agility, etc.
You mean just like
RetroJint : 8/15/2014 1:30 pm : link
the previous system. The same directives were issued.Talent is judged most accurately in base. Don't change the play except PS not really because they're just going to go up the LOS & run their play, remember? Did you forget to remember, as Parcells famously asked? Defined routes. No more snapping at 1; they're now going to snap at 28. Why the inconsistency in judging the 2 systems or is a foolish consistency the hobgoblin of small minds as our leading Naturalist once said.
I been to practices, and I can't overstate....
Crispino : 8/15/2014 1:36 pm : link
how bad the offense looks. It's not just the plays, but also the execution. Receivers can't get open and when they do, the ball doesn't get there. It's flat out ugly. The run plays get blown up more often than not. That doesn't concern me as much because the D can cheat a bit knowing what the offense is working on. But the passing game looks putrid. God, I hope I'm wrong, but I'm gonna be surprised if it all comes together by opening day. They look like they have a million miles to go.
Should be:

its kind of unrealistic to expect the Giants to hit the ground running
chris r : 8/15/2014 1:39 pm : link
with a new offense and a mostly new OL. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if they struggled the first several games of the regular season too.

If we haven't strung together some good offensive games midway through the season, then I think panic about the system and talent is warranted.
Preseason performance
Jerry in DC : 8/15/2014 1:44 pm : link
is pretty close to meaningless for any team, any side of the ball, any phase of the game. And I'd say the exact same thing if we were lighting it up like Spurrier's Redskins in Osaka.

It's useful to the players and coaches as part of the preparation process and for evaluating some specific things. From the outside, there's almost zero that can be learned. You might be able to notice that a guy looks fast or fat or see how somebody's recovering from an injury. That's about it.

The concerning thing about our offense is how much it sucked for the past 1.5 seasons. Hopefully some of the changes will help, but we won't know anything about it for a while.
Nice job Corey,
oldog : 8/15/2014 1:48 pm : link
too bad that a post which reflects on the actuality gets drowned in a sea of half-baked pessimistic opinion, and ignores the efforts by Giant management to upgrade the team with a view to getting back to competitiveness this year. Time will tell if there has been success, but it may turn more on whether Eli, Beatty and Pierre-Paul return to form than on other factors. Even if not, to this point things look substantially upgraded from this time last year, and some really encouraging talent seems to be emerging.

there is a lot to be excited about. New coaches, new system, new personnel and a collectively weak NFC East defense. It's going to be all new for opposing coaches. So be excited. Leave the worrying to the coaches. This is going to be a fun season.

Is this coming from Hurricane Sandy camp?

Anyway. It's a new offense. First of all, preseason isn't going to reveal much either way. Secondly, to expect there to be no growing pains or mistakes along the way is silly. It's going to take a little time. There's going to be a process. We just need to hope it'll click before too much time goes by with the expectation that the defense needs to completely carry the team

meaningless? I don't think so. Players competing for a roster spot? Preseason decides that. Silly to write off what happens in preseason.
I will add that what happens the 1st few games of the regular season
AnnapolisMike : 8/15/2014 5:17 pm : link
may mean little in terms of how the season will play out. My expectations are for the team to struggle offensively out of the gate. A new offensive line and new offensive system will take time to gel and settle in.

Hopefully the defense can carry this team for a little while.
I don't care about the plays,

have little bearing on the regular. Trends that show up in preseason, like last year's offense not being able to score a td until the last possession of that preseason, ten to show up during the regular season.

I hope the OP is correct, but this offense needs to show some improvement before the beginning of the regular season.
Is it OK if I stay worried until I see that Eli's 2013 season was just
Reese's Pieces : 8/15/2014 6:11 pm : link
a fluke? With Eli, the rest of the offense will work itself else. He will turn some of the questionable receivers into solid, confident pros.

Without old Eli, how can you see any hope?
I have been encouraged
PEEJ : 8/15/2014 6:26 pm : link
that the second/third team defense has only given up 9 points in the second halves of games (and 3 of those were off a fumbled punt).

I am just hoping we can run the ball early in the year
SGMen : 8/15/2014 7:25 pm : link
Run, no turnovers and. Let our defense win the first quarter of the year til the passing game improves. Our D and specials should both be solid.
The offense surely needs work
Corey : 8/15/2014 8:25 pm : link
I'm certainly not trying to say the offense isn't a work in progress. I think we all agree that it is. One thing I do sincerely believe that is factoring into the offensive struggles at practice is how suffocating the secondary is. In my opinion, our CB's are really good. It's possible the Giants are trying to learn a brand new offense against a top 5 defense overall, and a top 2 or 3 secondary. That's not ludicrous to think considering the defense was arguably top 10 last year (8th in Yards/game, but 14th in points allowed), and have added some serious talent.
I can't imagine
JoeCabbie : 8/15/2014 8:32 pm : link
they could have this down pat before game 6 or so. If we can start 3-3 I like our chances. If Giantfilthy is right, and I don't doubt him or Dottino, there will be a crazy amount of ints.
It just dawned on me
djm : 8/15/2014 9:11 pm : link
That 2012-2013 saw the worst stretch of NYG football since 2003-2004.

This team definitely lost their identity last year around half way through 2012 and they are still trying to find their offensive mojo. Any giant fan not at least a little worried or anxious about this team is probably lying to themselves. With that said, I trust Reese, coughlin and Eli. We have seen this franchise sink to pretty low depths before under this regime only to rise back up. I like to think back to second half 08 through the 09 season as a comparison. Even though they won the east in 08 and dominated for 11 weeks or so the giants faded down the stretch and then totally shit the bed in 09 thanks to a defense that lost their way. Enter the 2010 season. Changes were made, some new blood was brought in and the team rebounded with a ten win season. That season ended horribly but the seeds were planted and the team built off that season and won the Super Bowl in 2011.

Hopefully the 2014 campaign sees a resurgent ten win season. The defense recovered from 09-10 now we need the offense to follow suit.
