A number of sports writers have either overtly stated, or strongly implied that things are not looking good for the starting offense in light of the first two pre-season games. While it is true that the first-team unit has not lit up the scoreboard, this is hardly indicative of their potential, or even strongly correlated with how they will perform during the regular season. One has only to glance through the box scores of the other teams in the league to notice that very few starting units are having grand success.

This is a long way of saying, pre-season doesn't mean a whole hell of a lot.
Paul Dottino has been stating over and over to stop paying attention. Just stop. Most of what we are seeing right now we will never see again. He said it is unlike any preseason campaign he has ever seen, after decades of watching practice.
To be specific, the majority of plays that are being called, the QB's have been given instruction that even if when reading the defense they realize the play will not work, run that shit anyway.
They are compiling data. Figuring out which players run what best. Figuring out if certain plays will even work well enough in-game.
I consider most of this season as a trial run for next season. We need to establish a new offensive scheme this season, shore up the O-line and TE position over the winter, and prepare to put a championship-caliber team on the field in 2015-16.
We might even make the playoffs this year, but I doubt we're deep enough (or dominant enough on defense) to go far.
Concern? For real?
Of course, that's the pessimistic POV - the truth will probably lie in the middle. I tend to think we'll have an average-ish offense this year (with it improving as the season progresses) but don't have much confidence in that assessment.
With that said, the preseason performance doesn't raise those concerns. I think we'll be okay.
There is no magic switch that gets flipped before game 1.
Obviously there is game-planning that will affect how we look in the reg season versus pre-season... but there are many aspects of pre-season as a whole that can and should be considered a good indicator of what we can expect in the reg season.

that the Offense looks much better running plays that we aren't seeing / haven't seen yet?
We might be horrible this year for all I know. Dottino of course is walking the company line a bit here, but it still gives a reason why it's pointless for any of us to sit in a dark corner and cut ourselves over Eli not having a TD pass after the first two preseason games.
And I typically go to the bottle of gin over the knife/dark corner thing anyway...
So, are the DBs that good? Are the QBs and WRs on the same page? Is Randle really a good #2 WR? Why is BrownCruz having so much trouble beating Thurmond? Why is Charles basically a turn-stile against JPP and having trouble with other DEs? What's up with Mario not getting separation? When will Beckham show us something?
About pre-season games, I have 2 objectives: no one gets hurt and we evaluate what players can and cannot do, that is, smarts, strength, technique, speed, quickness, agility, etc.
If we haven't strung together some good offensive games midway through the season, then I think panic about the system and talent is warranted.
It's useful to the players and coaches as part of the preparation process and for evaluating some specific things. From the outside, there's almost zero that can be learned. You might be able to notice that a guy looks fast or fat or see how somebody's recovering from an injury. That's about it.
The concerning thing about our offense is how much it sucked for the past 1.5 seasons. Hopefully some of the changes will help, but we won't know anything about it for a while.

Good post.
Is this coming from Hurricane Sandy camp?
Anyway. It's a new offense. First of all, preseason isn't going to reveal much either way. Secondly, to expect there to be no growing pains or mistakes along the way is silly. It's going to take a little time. There's going to be a process. We just need to hope it'll click before too much time goes by with the expectation that the defense needs to completely carry the team

Per usual, Spot on Jerry

Hopefully the defense can carry this team for a little while.
I hope the OP is correct, but this offense needs to show some improvement before the beginning of the regular season.
Without old Eli, how can you see any hope?
This team definitely lost their identity last year around half way through 2012 and they are still trying to find their offensive mojo. Any giant fan not at least a little worried or anxious about this team is probably lying to themselves. With that said, I trust Reese, coughlin and Eli. We have seen this franchise sink to pretty low depths before under this regime only to rise back up. I like to think back to second half 08 through the 09 season as a comparison. Even though they won the east in 08 and dominated for 11 weeks or so the giants faded down the stretch and then totally shit the bed in 09 thanks to a defense that lost their way. Enter the 2010 season. Changes were made, some new blood was brought in and the team rebounded with a ten win season. That season ended horribly but the seeds were planted and the team built off that season and won the Super Bowl in 2011.
Hopefully the 2014 campaign sees a resurgent ten win season. The defense recovered from 09-10 now we need the offense to follow suit.
