The poor OL play: more about ability or cohesion/new system?

chris r : 8/16/2014 11:35 pm
For those who didn't watch the game online on a bad stream, was the poor OL play more a result of our OL getting their assess kicked or missed assignments?
we were not able to pick up blitzes...especially delays

Pugh whiffed a couple of times....Beatty did ok
Schwartz does not look good
robbieballs2003 : 8/16/2014 11:46 pm : link
That is very disappointing.
How Was Beatty?

Big question
It's about a lot of things.
Red Dog : 8/16/2014 11:55 pm : link
First is lack of continuity. This is essentially an all-new line with a bunch of guys who weren't here last year. And some of them have switched positions, too, and are playing in unfamiliar places on the line. They have to learn to play together, and that takes time. Don't look for them to play like the Suburbanites or the Electric Company anytime soon because it isn't going to happen.

Next there is the new offense. At this point they have just completed installation and haven't started to seriously game plan for opponents yet. So there are the inevitable bugs to iron out.

Then there's a lack of talent driven by a remarkable string of bad drafts and incredible indifference from management towards the OL that protects the guy who soaks up about a quarter of the entire team cap, the franchise QB. There just isn't much talent beyond the starters and Weston Richburg.

The veteran free agents are guys that other teams didn't want any more at any price, or at least were not willing to pay what the GIANTS would pay, and the GIANTS didn't break the bank for any of them. So draw your own conclusions about the talent level.

The cure for that is on the horizon, but still nine months away. The 2015 draft is supposedly loaded with high quality OTs from major conferences, and has a bunch of good Guards, too. The G-men should be able to get a couple more guys who can come in and play at a high level sooner rather than later.

Of course, if Eli gets hurt this season, it might not make much difference for a couple more years anyway.
They had trouble with line stunts and blitzes
Reale01 : 8/17/2014 12:09 am : link
Not overpowered in pass plaocking, but little push in run blocking. Schwartz was bad. Pugh was pretty bad. Mosely bad. Walton was OK and I thought Beatty played pretty well.
OL talent is quite average
SGMen : 8/17/2014 12:10 am : link
I was hoping Snee had a solid season left in him but alas it was not to be. I do believe that our 1st team will show up next week.
This team sucks
ANGPASS : 8/17/2014 12:11 am : link
They say it is a vanilla offense right now. but in a vanilla offense, u can tell if guys can block or not. eli is going to throw a ton of picks this year due to him thinking of getting sacked. you can just see the body language that he doesnt trust this o line at all. I love corey washington, but he won't do anything because our OL is probably worse than last year.
What a shit show. 3 straight games they start off with 3 n out. they can't even get 1 good drive against anyones ones. IDC about that 73 yrd td. that looks like a fluke right now. I just can;t believe how far dow this team has gone. Really should of drafted martin in the first round. And still drafted richburg. Not to say OBJ is a waste yet, but eli won't be able to get him the ball. Walton and schwartz are a JOKE. Sorry for being a debbie downer.
I shouldn't be bitching, but i look forward to watching these games as soon as the last one ends and hope they will come out being productive. after 3 straight games, IDC if it is preseason, they look BAD. Actually i wish they played bad. it would be better than what they showed so far. the backups r more fun to watch. all you hear about practice is how the defense is picking off everyone. i know they are good, but this offense can't move on anyone.
The big question is,
prdave73 : 8/17/2014 12:39 am : link
How in the world did Reese think this Oline he put together was good enough?? Knowing that he needs to fix this offense according to Mara, and the first main thing you fix on an offense is the Offensive Line! Knowing Snee might not make it back from injury?? You got teams in the NFl that their 2nd stringers are better then the Giants 1st.. If you want to help Eli improve and fix this offense, the one thing Reese needed to do was fix the Oline! Look at the Pats, who where their starting WR's?? Its a joke they have crappy WR's and they still get the job done on offense. Why? they have an Oline. Look at the Packers tonight, check their online out. Could have help this Oline in the draft as well but instead the Cowboys ended up benefiting? Then we all blame Eli and why he's having a crappy year??
we should trade Schwartz
beatrixkiddo : 8/17/2014 12:42 am : link
for Boone straight up.

Seriously, I'm not that impressed with the guy and the contract he has been given. Very slow off the snap, get's beat to often inside. They need to put him at RG if that's where he is comfortable playing.

Beatty did well tonight, he will be more than serviceable. I hope Pugh get's it together, hasn't had a great Pre-season.

Nobody is saying this team sucks seriously,

But what is very obvious these last few games is this Oline looking like shit.. You cannot deny how bad this line has looked, and it's hard to believe Reese knowing how bad Eli & this offense needed to improve did not really focus on this Oline..

They signed two high priced vet free agent interior OL and drafted an interior OL in the second round. They also signed 2 lower priced linemen in FA and have Mosley entering his 3rd year. They did anything but ignore the OL this past offseason.

Stop making blanket statements in august. It's stupid.
umm ok..
prdave73 : 8/17/2014 3:08 am : link
Schwartz was the only quality Lineman they picked up in the offseason the rest where scrub free agents teams didn't want anymore. Could be the main reason this offense is sputtering??Richburg seems like a good pickup but will play behind Walton for now..

Walton was the starter on a pretty good Denver line until he broke an ankle and the got an infection. He's been out about two years and is likely a bit rusty. I seriously doubt he is a scrub. Scrubs don't start for Denver' offensive line.

And as to signing players that even their own teams wouldn't sign - nice blanket statement. Many teams cannot afford to re-sign their own free agents - Marcellis Bennett come to mind?
also, there was a different approach between the teams
George from PA : 8/17/2014 5:59 am : link
our rush was a straight rush.....nothing fancy...they had stunts, blitzes and delayed blitzes....so it is two different approaches to the game.

Read through the threads. There are a lot of people (maybe the majority) saying this team sucks. Maybe not you, but a lot of people. There are even some saying the o-line is fine and it is all on Eli.

...you nailed it.
I have seen posts
Doomster : 8/17/2014 8:03 am : link
where many have said the OL has improved, by the mere fact that it can't be any worse than last year's line....

Anyone with football knowledge knows that it takes a season(s) for a line to develop, but many on BBI think this is just plug and play.....trouble with plug and play, it only works if you have talented players....

This line will be a work in progress, all year.....last year, the OL couldn't handle stunts over the middle....they couldn't handle stunts from any direction last night.....

Next week, is where the Giants have an advantage....usually the fourth game, the scrubs play most of the game....with the extra game in hand, we should see the first team out there, for the whole first half, and it should be on a mission....why in the world was Eli pulled with 2 minutes left in the half last night? Wouldn't that have been a good time to run the WCO in a 2 minute drill, even against second stringers?

You can only judge this line by what you have seen thus far....I said this year Pugh would be on an island, and it looks like the tourists that visit are having a great time....and this is the guy, the Giants did not have to worry about?

This talent thing is BS

Beatty - 2nd
Walton - 3rd
Richburg - 2nd
Pugh - 1st
Brown - 2nd
Perry - 3rd
Mosley - 4th

Here is the reality

Beatty is back from a major injury. Schwartz is playing a new G position. Walton is playing his 1st action in 2 years. Mosley has 1 career start at RG. Richburg is a rookie. Jerry is back from knee surgery

This is going to take time, but they have players who have ability to play.

We have a whole post on trading for Boone. Do people realize he was undrafted in 09 and did not play in 09, 10, & 11. It took him until hi 4th year to show anything
Beatty
Earl the goat : 8/17/2014 8:47 am : link
Is horrible. He will never be the same and always injury prone. One of Reese's worse contracts. Time to get Pugh at left tackle. I think mosely will be fine at right guard. Richburgh will be the center. Hopefully the other two positions can be filled in and the line can gel. Will take time but does Elii pay the price?
I think the thing that you need to realize,
barens : 8/17/2014 9:38 am : link
Is that more than half of the teams in the NFL have poor line play, though the Giants have been having this issue since 2011. But when you watch most teams, you see a lot of similar problems. Heck, last night, Indy could not run the ball, and there were times when Luck was under duress as well.

i know. you're right. but this offense doesn't look promising. even coughlin doesn;t like how it looks. at this point, they should trade a 3rd for boone. i just can't watch 3 n outs every game. it is pathetic.
Blocking is blocking
deadkurtrulz : 8/17/2014 9:45 am : link
not buying the new system excuse. You put a hat on the guy across from you. Our two free agent signings look bad. Walton and Schwartz were passable vets , not stud all pros. They have looked bad. Needing a RG or LT we draft a center to back up Walton if he fails? Great. We sign washouts like Jerry and Brown and hope for a miracle. Pugh has regressed. He has been getting manhandled at point of attack. So far it looks like the patchwork OL plan has failed. I wanted Martin badly hoping Giants would rebuild a solid OL base but they decided they could fix OL on the cheap. It does not look like that has worked. It seems to me Giants are physically outmatched at the line of scrimmage. If this is true we are in for a long season. Skill positions don't matter if you are weak at the core.
You put a hat on the guy across from you?
Headhunter : 8/17/2014 9:52 am : link
that's it? You don't have to pick up stunts? You don't have to pull? you don't have to trap block? You don't have to sell a screen? You just have to put a hat on the guy in front of you!
They sure look like they could have used Zack Martin
jeff57 : 8/17/2014 10:16 am : link
Especially with 2 undrafted WRs impressing.
I think it's both.
AnishPatel : 8/17/2014 10:24 am : link
ability and cohesion in this new system is still lacking. I am not sold on the talent on this OL. However, it's going to take a while for them to gel and work together. If I am Detroit, I am going to blitz the shit out the offense and try to force Eli to make a mistake.
3/5 of the line has been replaced..
PeterS : 8/17/2014 10:35 am : link
our best TE left via free agency and there is a new offense for the first time in 6 seasons. If we had a healthy Snee, Deihl and Baas plus Pascoe and this was still happening there would be cause for concern.
I agree with prDave73....Reece blew it big time
nicky43 : 8/17/2014 11:21 am : link
His most importsnt task this off season was to fix the o-line and clearly he fell VERY SHORT in that task. Very dissapointed and worried for Eli.

The Schwartz move was Ok (I hope) but picking up two Centers in the off season shows Reece did not have a good plan considering how many O-Line positions needed to be upgraded.

Concern about tipping run plays
The line had some issues picking up the blitzes
eclipz928 : 8/17/2014 12:44 pm : link
but actually looked much better in the last couple series before the half - Eli and Painter just couldn't do much to convert to keep the drives going.

Some of you just need to calm down. As mentioned, a lot of these players on the line are playing for the first time coming off of injury or have been out of nfl action for some time.

There's a lot of rust to be shakin off, and they have to do that while becoming familiar with each other and a new system - this is going to take time. It's assinine to try to assess this Oline after a preseason game in mid-August.
It's both
SwirlingEddie : 8/17/2014 12:59 pm : link
I'll repeat what I posted elsewhere - watch the Giants first series. On first down both Walton and Schwartz get beat across their faces and their men stuff the run in the "hole". On second down Donnell completely whiffs on any of the four defenders at the point of attack. On third down they adjust for the LB blitz but Schwartz fails to recognize and slide in time to pick up the safety.

There are some cohesion and unit issues of course, but that doesn't explain nor excuse the plethora of individual assignment failures we are seeing.
Really Simple Right?
Samiam : 8/17/2014 1:09 pm : link
It is so not simple, it's almost a joke. Bart Oates goes to my gym. he said that one can never tell on television whose at fault for a sack or a poorly executed running play because you don't know what play was called insofar as blocking is concerned and it's far more complicated than whet the layman thinks it is. It is so not just block the guy in front of you.

The starting OL for the team had never played a down together as a unit until a few weeks ago. Plus, with the CBA, they don't get much real time practice the way they used to. We can't draw any conclusions about their long term play especially given the number of blitzes and stunts they have been facing. The coaches may draw some conclusions and may make some changes i.e. Westburg but we don't have a clue about how to fix then problem based on 3 exhibition games where the starters have played sparingly. I think they will try to keep the current unit basically intact and hope for health if only to see them try to jell. Any other actions would be panic driven and not smart. These coaches know how to build a good OL; they've done it in the past. they can do it again.

Why would Detroit want to game plan a preseason game rather than work on things to make them a better team in the regular season ??

this pre season is longer, which I actually like this season. Can you imagine if this product was any other season where we only have 4 games?

I hope they game plan and let Eli play all game. This offense needs the work and can't afford the luxury of pulling the first team early.
