I rewatched the game : Thoughts on "Eli"

sxdxca : 8/17/2014 8:49 pm
#1) On the first 3 drives the offensive line is "NOT" the problem. The o line gave him enough time to hit his receivers.

Beatty played well and so did Pugh. On those first 3 drives neither did Beatty or Pugh allow pressure.

#2) Eli is just flat out not being accurate on his throws. The throw to Larry Donnell was behind him and low. The interception he threw the protection was literally perfect, he just for whatever reason didn't hit his receiver in stride. The throw to Rueben Randle was just off.

Bottom line if you want to fix this offense, the Qb coach needs to work with Eli on his accuracy. No more throwing off of his back foot when there isn't pressure.

He needs practice, he needs way more reps to perfect the accuracy

I agree, but don't forget that the tail end of 2012 he was playing the exact same way. The biggest problem with all of this was that Eli's best attribute was the ability to maintain composure despite bad plays or bad streaks. However, he's always struggled with stepping UP in the pocket. He's always had that habit of making those back foot throws that sail high in the face of pressure. When he would step up no one was better (i.e, 2011, 2010). Even if Eli is in fact "done", no one can complain about what he did for this team. I'm willing to go through the painful rebuilding process knowing this guy played his ass off during two super bowl runs. Not to mention, in the 33 years I've been watching this team, the NFC Champ game in 2007 was one of the best performances by an NFL QB I've ever seen. Let's hope we have something in the plan for the future and see how this plays out.

the 2011 champ game was one of the greatest beatings ive ever seen a QB take.

The truth is that Reese and TC left Eli out to dry since 2012. Our drafting has been putrid and we're now paying that price.
I don't know what game you re-watched.
Shockeyisthebest80 : 8/18/2014 2:34 am : link
He got hit on 2 of his first 3 drop backs. They couldn't remotely run the ball. It was a mess.

GiantJohn : 8/18/2014 4:13 am : link
Throw to Jernigan was perfect. I could have caught that ball. Agree with others about poor blocking. Agree though that Manning had a bad game.
I said in an earlier thread I'm concerned about Eli. I stand on that comment

SanFranGiantsFan : 8/18/2014 6:21 am : link
I fear that Eli has become shell-shocked, if you will, from last season. And the OL hasn't done much to inspire confidence that this season will be even better.
...
Toth029 : 8/18/2014 7:35 am : link
I hope guys like Washington and Harris can get time with Eli and Cruz.

The OL will need time to gel. But I don't think Randle should be a lock to be a starter opposite Cruz.

my game review write-up on Manning is going to make a lot of people upset. I'm very, very harsh on him and his future with this team.

But to say pass protection was not an issue in the game is outright not true.

The problem is Eli got rattled in 2013 and he remains rattled thus far in 2014. He may be done.

Agreed. As I said elsewhere, the problems are everywhere on offense, but especially with the OL and Eli. The irony is that Eli might be the bigger problem. The problems with the OL might, might be mostly a function of a lack of chemistry. Only Beatty and Pugh remain from last year.

Eli does look rattled. He's thinking about the rush. Luck was totally opposite. So frankly was Nassib. Nassib got flattened on one play, and got right back up, and went right back at the Colts. He was also running for his life on a number of other plays.

It is just preseason, but this preseason has more importance given the season Eli had last year. I hate to think that your Neil Lomax comparison might be correct, but it easily could be. We'll know by Halloween at the latest IMO. Coughlin and Eli are probably both done with another bad year.
Eli needs to be better than OK
AnnapolisMike : 8/18/2014 8:20 am : link
He is getting paid like an Elite QB....and has been no where close to that level for almost 2 years now.

At some point this is going to be a return on investment issue. If you can pay someone else less to do the same thing and spend the difference on players who can make the team better....It really becomes a no brainer. We will see how things play out....but if the Giants miss the playoffs I am not sure we will see Eli next year.

Eli is scheduled to make $17M next year. That won't happen unless there is a complete turnaround from last year, including a deep run into the playoffs.
Dead money is minimal next
AnnapolisMike : 8/18/2014 8:36 am : link
year if they let Eli loose. That said...these threads in the middle of preseason are kind of pointless. We need to see what happens in the regular season. We will know by the bye week.
Fundamentally, we aren't seeing a different Eli than the one
Jimmy Googs : 8/18/2014 8:43 am : link
we saw last year. He doesn't have good footwork under his throws, he is feeling the pressure way too much and it shows in his continued rushed, inaccurate passes. He looks unsettled, and that was even apparent in the first two games when he barely threw at all.

Pressure is going to come. It doesn't matter who they play or whether we trade for 5 all-pro lineman...pressure is dialed up based on down & distances and situational football. If Eli can't handle it anymore than he is done.

Eli, TC & McAdoo are going to have to figure it out. They need to get Eli to change his bad habits and they are going to have to run plays that offer the best chance to keep the defense off balance. Right now, I see neither happening (albeit preseason).

Defenses are playing very aggressive vs Giants because its working. Either the Giants figure out how to expose that aggressiveness or they are just going to wear out Weatherford's leg...

Eli's mechanics are just a mess right now.
arcarsenal : 8/18/2014 8:47 am : link
To me, this is really about that more than anything. I think he's gun shy and I think he's so focused on feeling immediate pressure that his footwork and pocket movement are just going completely by the wayside.

The only way that's going to get fixed is if the line provides some decent protection and allows him to get it sorted out. There's no way he's going to fix any of this if he's got someone running free before he's even hit the back end of his drop.

So hypothetically, if Eli throws for 4,000 yards, 30 Tds, and 14 INTs but they fail to make the playoffs.... Eli wont be the starting QB?
understandable denial
area junc : 8/18/2014 9:01 am : link
it will b hard for fans to admit and even harder for coughlin to admit but eli is killing the giants right now. the offense is playing just like he is playing - non-competitive

make some plays

find completions

use your skill to get us going

there are plays to b made all over the field. the colts showed what an elite, hungry QB looks like. we all have our theories, mine is that eli got rich, fat and happy ($100+ million in the bank, 2 kids, 2 rings) and just lost his edge. He's also gonna b 34 in january. think its a combination of all those factors that makes it not much of a mystery what we're seeing now.

the QB is not simply along for the ride like an offensive guard. he makes it go. he spent his entire career avoiding trouble and making plays. its just not there anymore.
i would also say
area junc : 8/18/2014 9:06 am : link
eli's quick demise (if thats indeed whats happened) would fall nicely in line with his entire giants career here. improbable, unexplainable and with many of his teammates falling off a cliff suddenly, without warning

BrettNYG10 : 8/18/2014 9:07 am : link
area junc's post seals it. Eli's passing for 6,000 yards this season.
The OL may or may not have been terrible
Johnny5 : 8/18/2014 9:14 am : link
But the fact of the matter is Eli is playing shell shocked this year, and expecting to get hit. It's not a good thing and I am hoping A) That the line gels a bit and B) Eli gets over his skittishness.

Otherwise we are in for another long year. I think they'll get it together. I just hope we are able to win a few games while it happens.

I watched and saw: oline cant pick up blitzes..
eli got pushed around and knocked down.
was forcing throws and receivers werent looking....
cause eli threw to avoid sack...only good throw
was to cruz...a couple throws he had time and was
short and on too long....mcadoo mentioned having
eli throw the way his feet are pointed...?..I know
he has been playing with hi6z technic...rythm is off..
why 2nd and 3rd qbs have been playing better.is
strange...its like watching differant team...
I dont buy because they are playing lesser player..
against bills eli still struggled against bills 2nd team

Qb's make their money on 3rd down
#10* : 8/18/2014 11:18 am : link
Eli is making a lot of money but no 3rd downs. It mostly seems to do with his accuracy combined with being pressured more on 3rds.

This will be an interesting week of practice. I think TC should put Nassib in with the ones and see if he moves the chains on 3rd. If he does, and Eli can't destroy the 2nd unit then this may be a Eli problem.
Kurt Warner
Thegratefulhead : 8/18/2014 11:25 am : link
This reminds me a lot of what happened to Kurt Warner in St Louis. He did eventually get over it but it took a new team and a receiver he could just chuck it up to when in trouble(Larry Fitzgerald)

Please no...Eli is the undisputed #1 on this team. He will not be undermined in preseason by a QB controversy. For better or worse...the Giants will ride into battle with Eli at the helm.
Why did you put his name in quotes

In baseball they call it the yips.
manh george : 8/18/2014 12:25 pm : link
Eli looks as if he has the yips. Lack of confidence in what he can do feeding back into physical/technique problems.

It's an on/off switch. Either he overcomes that and becomes a quality qb again, or he doesn't, in which case the 2014 Giants are doomed.

The team knows this. My guess is that he is already talking to a sports psychologist. If he isn't, then management is just stupid.
This sports psychologist might help

LOSING IS A DISEASE...

Micko : 8/18/2014 12:32 pm : link
I blame Eli and the o-line for his performance but I mostly blame Eli. The reality is that Eli may very well be on the decline. His inability or reluctance to move around in the pocket (which he did very well through 2008 - 2011) seems to be an issue here. Despite the pressure I expect Eli to hit open receivers when he does in fact have the time. He's missing badly. Maybe the light-bulb goes on soon and we see what Eli can do but I'm very concerned. We can spin it any way we want but really good QBs don't have the year that Eli had last year.
Eli has a history of inaccuracy and I believe the WC

He is smart and may know McAdoo's offense by now, but

his throws are erratic and he really lacks mobility IMHO.

all the panic around here regarding Eli. If he's not scarred by 2013, he isn't human...add to that an entirely new offense with an entirely new Oline, etc...all starting from scratch basically and you have severe growing pains. This offense needed to be re-built from the ground up brick by brick...it's been all of a month (not counting the spring work)and people are honestly suggesting Eli is done?!?! If we see the same things happening come November I'll be concerned...right now, it's pretty much what I expected given all the new moving parts. NO QB can operate without confidence in himself, the system and the pieces around him. How in the world is Eli supposed to be confident in the latter two at this point? He'll get there....relax.

but his tireless quest to improve is his most important attribute, imv..

No one will ever convince me of the opinion that a man who led two SB winning drives before nearly a billion people worldwide, is going to be intimidated or gunshy..

He needs lots of reps in this new O, so there's no telling when he'll become acclimated..But he's Eli..Least of my concerns

Toward the end of last year and I was told it was ridiculous, he was too young, never injured, etc. He looks completely overwhelmed and sounds completely indifferent to it. He's got his dough, his rings, his family, his commercials, what's left to motivate him?

I'm not knocking the guy, he's been amazing for us but he looks cooked.
I think Eli will bounce back to have at least an average season
BrettNYG10 : 8/18/2014 2:29 pm : link
With moments of superb play that we've seen before, but even if he doesn't get gets another year IMO.

I'd be shocked if Eli's 'done'. I don't think he'll return to 2011 peak Eli, but the 2008-2010 variety (which was still very, very good) should return.

I think his injury has had an effect on him. Just because he says it's fine, it's gone, poof, it just disappeared doesnt mean it has.

Libval joseph played all year with a torn labrum. Simms played with broken thumb and ribs. Tone of other players played through injury and doesn't come out till after the season. we all know manning came back suspiciously fast. the effects may be showing now. He will improve but too many times most posters here think that because a guy is playing he is " fine" many players play through pain and injury all year long. it's what they do.

Eli is older, slower , less acurate and it has looked like other QBs on the team are picking up the new schem faster. He had been throwing picks left and right in preseason. Noone wants to say it but the fact is he looks like he picked up where he left off.He looks like he's over the hill and in a decline.

That said he has shown more that once pity the poor fool who counts him out.He has balls brains and composure.6 weeks from now he can be playing like a totally different QB.Myself I think that's about how long it's gonna take.if the team can cover for him early on till he gets on track we may be allright.I think Eli has some issues we aren't aware of.

On the first drive the running game put them at 3rd and 5. Eli couldn't convert a 5 yard throw, it was terrible. That's on him, not the O line, go rewatch the first 3 drives. I'm done.

And if head to head the 11-5 two years in a row Colts look better for the moment, there are a lot of weaker teams to be played this year before week 9. So far our free agency, draft, and yes, even undrafted players are emerging and improving which speaks volumes for the future. And Giants are 3-0, glad we're not 0-3.

This offense is going to be brutal to watch to start the season. But it should get better when the OL gels and the skill positions get more confortable.

Win games ugly to start. Win them pretty to end the year.

As a veteran who lived through the seventies:
We owe Eli for what he has done, he will do no more. Too many pieces missing, most of all a dominant defense.

My advice, don't talk shit, hope we can win the weakest division in football this year and make some noise in the playoffs, if we get to see Belichick/Brady again, we'll be fine.

Your Giant loyalty will be tested, respect Coughlin and Eli and bid them a fond farewell at the end of the year...
