NFL Scouts Talk Anonymously About NFC East Teams

More anonymous scouts.

Quote:

New York Giants

“In many ways without changing the GM and head coach, the Giants moved away from their conservative philosophy and fired coaches and delved into free agency heavily to try and shake up their own franchise.” …

“Tom Coughlin got rid of long-time offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride and hired Ben McAdoo from Green Bay to call plays, while rather than waiting on the draft, GM Jerry Reese was active in signing at least 10 significant free agents.” …

“Still, the bottom line here is the play of Eli Manning. His 27 interceptions led the league and the turnover margin killed any chance of this team making the playoffs a year ago.” …

“McAdoo will install a more disciplined attack based on timing and reads and that adjustment may rejuvenate Manning mentally and physically.” ....

“Odell Beckham, Jr. was their first-round pick and he is really a good player. Along with Victor Cruz and Reuben Randle, they can now get a threat to all parts of the field.” …

“in 2013, with the line struggling up front, defenses could double those two and still squeeze off the run game. Will Beatty has been a disaster at LT, Chris Snee has gotten old [Editor’s note: Snee retired prior to the start of training camp.] and Justin Pugh had his rookie season ups-and-downs. They signed Geoff Schwartz from KC to help secure the inside of the pocket, but OGs are not game-changers.” …

“Defensive coordinator Perry Fewell has lost some of his luster, but it’s primarily been because of Jason Pierre-Paul’s lack of production due to injuries. They need him to return to form, in addition to Damontre Moore or newly acquired Robert Ayers to provide some pass rush from the opposite side.” …

“The linebacker unit is a collection of average players and they inked Jameel McClain from the Ravens despite his neck injury in December.” …

“It’s Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie to the rescue at corner and that is surprising because of his struggles with the Eagles back in 2011 and ’12. Prince Amukamara was over-drafted, so he will never be a lockdown corner. Walter Thurmond was brought in from Seattle as a third corner. In the meantime, Antrel Rolle is arguably the best player on the team right now.” …

“Two Super Bowls will buy a GM and head coach almost as much time as they want, but there is no question that 2014 is an important year for Coughlin and Reese and almost all of the results will come from the right arm of Eli Manning, because this team is really average everywhere else.” …

Prince comment surprises me, even if you don't think he's "great", he was taken 19th overall and is an above average NFL CB, how is that an overdraft?
thanks
SethFromAstoria : 8/18/2014 11:43 am : link
scouts. "Overdrafted". Ok.
Prince Amukamara was over-drafted

huh???
Looks like a bunch of stuff we already knew

If these are insider scout observations
jcn56 : 8/18/2014 11:49 am : link
then maybe the draft is a much bigger crapshoot than I thought. These observations could've been made by my 10 year old.
sounds like

that scouting report was written by an Eagles scout with an agenda.

These comments suck

It sounds like anyone on this site wrote them. Which f'ing scouts were asked? Are they scouts fresh out of the minors?

Horrible stuff.
The real issue I don't see addressed in these comments
MikeN in Ottawa : 8/18/2014 11:56 am : link
is that JR has drafted poorly since 2008 and not addressed the aging of the offensive line until Pugh was drafted. The Giants had to delve heavily into FA because their young players were poor and had not developed. The constant blaming of all this on Eli really bugs me because it is simply untrue. If these are truly NFL scouts then they should know this.

I'm not sure if the comment on Prince is accurate or not. My belief had been that he fell to the Giants and it was a great value pick at 19 as he was expected to go much higher, even potentially top ten.

But, hey, the proof is in the pudding and if we struggle this year the heat will really be on TC and JR.
but...but...
SHO'NUFF : 8/18/2014 12:00 pm : link
Gilbride "retired".

Why is that fact that this site and an anon scout are on the same page a bad thing? If anything it is confirmation that we're not all idiots getting it all wrong. Moreover, when a reporter calls a scout to get comments, this is what you get. Reporter says "what about Player X?" and the scout rattles off something. You're not going to get PFF style evaluation in an article like this -- even if a scout knows the team's %s on screens on 3rd and less than 5, it's not the type of thing a reporter gets or wants in something like this.

Quotes are fine. Not sure about the Prince quote (and I wonder what kind of a scout if evaluating both NFL and draftable players??).
Prince is a solid starter
Greg from LI : 8/18/2014 12:01 pm : link
Is he an all-pro? No, but cmon - in what world is a good starting CB not worth a late-round 1st?
When you think about it what
JCin332 : 8/18/2014 12:03 pm : link
credible "scout" would waste time speaking with a reporter about this stuff...I am assuming there area little busy at this point..
I continue to think Prince is severely underrated.
BrettNYG10 : 8/18/2014 12:04 pm : link
I think he's a solid #1 corner - and now with DRC here he's our #2, so our CBs are a position of strength for us.
seems pretty on point to me

Player I guess he gets underrated because he's not flashy.
With Prince
Samiam : 8/18/2014 12:14 pm : link
I think they are saying we could have gotten a CB with his skill set in a later round. Possibly true.

don't think Prince was overdrafted, but the rest is accurate. Team goes as far as Eli, and right now, that's not looking very far. The comments are also correct to the extent they indict Reese for his poor drafting, especially on the OL. The fact that we had to sign so many FAs this offseason is proof of his poor draft record.
The funny thing about calling Prince "over-drafted"
Giants11 : 8/18/2014 1:22 pm : link
is that when we picked him weren't many shocked that he fell to #19? I seem to remember many mocks had him going 4 or 5 picks higher.
I think Prince
Great White Ghost : 8/18/2014 2:36 pm : link
Is gonna get his dog on this year.
Over drafted?

those comments are not
shabu : 8/18/2014 6:23 pm : link
those comments are not necessarily inaccurate.. however I have more confidence in what the Giants have done in the offseason than those scouts do.

We need 2011 Eli and JPP back at a minimum Eli or we are in 5 year rebuild at a minimum.

trouble believing these were scouts
nyynyg : 8/18/2014 6:24 pm : link
it looks like quotes more from color commentators on TV.
Pretty useless info, top to bottom.
Exit 172 : 8/18/2014 7:23 pm : link
And did this scout watch Jon Beason play at all last year?
Just another piece of evidence
CRotondi : 8/18/2014 7:57 pm : link
that tells me scouting in the NFL is largely outdated.
Prince is overrated by most Giants fans

Those guys are right
prince rookie year was a waste
Dankbeerman : 8/18/2014 9:08 pm : link
No ofseason then injured. Played very well in basically his second season last year while we trotted out nothing thy resembled a starting cb on the other side and provided very little pass rush.

He May not be a true #1 but he could start on almost every team.
