Strikes me as team propaganda. top 12 is a red flag. What if the top 10 guys all make bank and there is a real falloff at 11? And then you can start to quibble with the definition of Guard -- SF can credibly claim that some guards were signed as tackles so their contracts should count in that analysis.
Because of league inflation, good players routinely set the new standard in contracts. Every new QB contract seems like it is one of the 5 richest deals ever given to a QB. Flacco hot the biggest ever. Top 12 isnt an amazing number to me.

not only do you have give up a draft pick you have to allocate more money to the interior of the OL.
Reese probably doesn't want to do that. I couldn't care less about the lost 3rd or 4th rounder...it's the big money they would have to spend for another guard that may be a problem down the road.
Even when this OL was at its peak, they weren't spending that much money on the guard. Snee was getting his but Seubert was always a bargain. Snee wasn't even getting big money till later on in his career.
@MikeGarafolo: Numbers are subjective. RT @mattbarrows: If Boone had offer as 12th highest-paid G, would've been in camp pronto. Diff ways to define offers
The contract is the problem, not giving up the draft pick(s)
I would think the Giants (or another team) could work out the trade portion of the transaction. But it would have to be a trade/sign transaction. This report indicates that Boone turned down a contract averaging in the neighborhood of $6 million annually. I don't see the Giants going into that neighborhood! Nor should they.

I'd view it more as a unit. So while Seubert wasn't getting big $$s, McKenzie and Snee were both well paid. And Diehl/O'Hara weren't exactly bargins.
Currently, Pugh is on a rookie deal and Walton is relatively cheap. Mosley/Richburg are making nothing. So it's really just Beatty and Schwartz that are well paid. And Schwartz really isn't making much compared to what Snee was getting.

For a guy who would be an instant starter at RG...probably the Giants best overall OL, and can start as an LT if called upon? You wouldn't pay this man an average of $6mil?
too expensive as someone said. Mara has already said not to expect the Giants to do again in FA what they did this year. That starts with saying no to any trade for Boone. My guess is that we'd also have to pay at least a slight premium to SF because we're in the same conference.
I'd shift Schwartz back to RG, and then use the last two games to find out if Mosley or Richburg should be the starting LG.
that could be the cost of years of line neglect. If Schwartz is truly battling for a starting spot with a rookie who played center in college, we're in deep shit. I think everyone agrees it's ideal to be able to develop from within, but at some point you have to start thinking about keeping our 100 million dollar man alive.
@timkawakami: If the 49ers didn't actually offer to make Alex Boone one of the top-12 paid guards, they probably shouldn't whisper that they did.
@MikeGarafolo: @timkawakami But in their minds they did. Sounds like the new $ on an extension was at a top-12 rate. But including yrs already on books, no
a 2016 3rd/conditional 2nd? Lets us buy time to draft/FA sign OL in '15, Richburg to find a home on the OL, and above all, keep Eli alive.
Also, SF runs a WC O so he has lower learning curve than WB, JP, and any other holdovers from 13 OL.
His asking price can be structured team friendly to when WB, GS, and JDW contract run out in '16.
And I agree, he may want out in SF.
Then we are set on the line and do not need to spend a high pick next year for a player who will take some time to contribute.
The overall cost of our o-line is low. Richburg and Pugh on rookie deals. Schwartz and Beatty have average deals, Mosely and Brewer are cheap. Brown and Jerry are cheap. Walton has a below average, but not cheap, deal.
You want to act sooner than later as we would need time to jell.
Beatty Boone Walton Shwartz Pugh
With Richburg pushing Walton and Schwartz if they have a problem is a good group.
Can go Pugh Richburg Walton Schwartz Boone if Beatty has problem.
Would move Richburg to C, Schwartz to RG and Boone to LG leave Pugh and Beatty alone and within 4 weeks we could have an OL that might be able to do something.

agreed.
Draft picks can turn into busts and take time to develop. This guy is in his prime and could immediately make our line much better.
GET IT DONE JR!!
Does he mean 12 highest paid?

Have fun watching more shitty offensive football.
He's 27 years old, I believe.

Starting OL against Detroit:
Beatty.
Mosley/Richburg.
Walton.
Schwartz.
Pugh.
Brewer, Jerry as game day backups.

agreed.
Perhaps. But he ain't gonna sign for the vet minimum.
Nobody has played next to each other for any extended period of time. It's going to look like the line of an expansion team for months.

UGH!
He started all 4 years at LT for Ohio State...Oh, and then there's this:
Boone can play Left Tackle - ( New Window )
Second, the article isn't written by pro personnel, he's just a fan with a differing opinion, one which conveniently matches yours.
Time will tell either way.

Heck we replaced Luke Petitgout with a left guard and that turned out ok.
I think Boone could potentially play a few spots on our Oline if needed.
I do like the idea of trading for Boone, I think he adds something we need at RG.
Ur nuts... hope was sarcasm. The dood sucked from day 1
sounds good to me !
I'd go as far as giving up a first round pick to improve our line because it's still in that much need!
