and actually think the name should be changed but if he doesn't want to say Redskins and is open about it, they should assign him that game and suspend him if he doesn't call them by the name. He could have probably gotten away with not saying anything and just referred them to "Washington" through the game. Now it is just to get publicity.
We murder the native Americans and take everything for ourselves, literally wipe that shit from the books and now 150 years later we try to make it all better by saying no more bad words it's mean. Gimme a break. The horse has left the barn.

but I have to say i dont recall the name bothering Phil all those yrs he was playing them
...because we all know that people's viewpoints can't evolve over time and that every single thing that we not bothered by when we were younger commits us to remain not bothered by them for the rest of our lives.
Was more important than any literal meaning a word can have. However for professionals not being mindful of PC can unfortunately be very harmful to a career. It is sad but it is the reality of the situation.

Holy fuck. So we admit all the bad that was done to them and then the conclusion is that if we take away a ridiculously offensive slang for them, it is somehow bad? How about the idea that some of these edifications help to admit and rectify ONGOING wrongdoings?
Some here are so insecure it is pathetic. Yeah, "PC". How about morally correct?
For how many years now? Now is when everyone decides to be pretentious about it?
We are supposed to get smarter as a species. You think it makes sense to realize something is offensive and then continue doing it just because "we've always done it that way!"?
"What's all the stink over the Redskin name? It's so much [expletive] it's incredible. We're going to let the liberals of the world run this world. It was said out of reverence, out of pride to the American Indian. It's all the political correct idiots in America, that's all it is. It's got nothing to do with anything else."
The ultimate insult is being called an idiot by Mike Ditka. Sometimes he puts Sarah Palin to shame. Link - ( New Window )

We? I didn't murder them and my family didn't murder them. Europeans who came to this country several hundred years ago did it and it has nothing to do with "us."
It's a terrible and offensive name--especially for a team representing our nation's capital-- and there happens to be enough momentum now in today's dialogue to rectify it and make a change. I view this as a good thing.
It just seems that others (not directed at the poster I quoted) are so selfish that they can't allow themselves to be inconvenienced in order to stop something which is damaging and hurtful to a group of people.
White people sure like to tell everyone where the line is, what is offensive, and what will be done to right the situation.
There are what, four black NFL head coaches? How many black GMs? 6? But 2/3 of the ~1,700 players in the NFL are black.
It's funny when white people highlight which areas it's ok for everyone to be offended. Go ahead and change the name of the Redskins. It's the same slight of hand and misdirection as naming a street after MLK, Jr.
A moment of clarity from montana. Refreshing.
That's the only possible explanation.

Yep. He'll probably be red in the face if that happens.
