It appears that Robinson made sight adjustments on his two big grabs against Indy. This comes from QB Nassib.
If he has finally learned the game maybe he can come on and be a force? He has the physical tools.
If so, this offense is totally different. Has anyone else seen anything in practice that would make you think he just might be getting special? We could really, really use a bust out of the blue (ala Cruz) guy this year.
Not trying to be a jerk, but if he busts out, which I doubt, it will obviously be good. Just don't count on it.
I am really looking forward to seeing him play this week against the Jets.
Hurt.
Now this is a new offense and he appears hungry. I am not saying he'll be an all-pro but rather that he has the tools to develop as the year goes and be a real threat.
He showed me something with those two catches. Physically he has it. But mentally does he? We shall see.
I understand the comparison in terms of what you hope to get out of the position, but Robinson has so much more to work with athletically. If he had Ballard' s head and football smarts he could very well end up a quality NFL tight end. Not a star, not a perennial all pro, but a dependable starter. And after last year I'd be more than happy with dependable. Shit, after last year I'd take somewhat dependable and be happy about it...

is if our Oline gives eli time and the WRs are making plays. He is good enough to have a ballard like role and be an unsung hero for 3 or 4 games in the year making plays own the field in crunch time when defenses are not expecting him

Hell, if you combined Ballard and Robinson into one player you'd have an All-Pro TD! :)
When you say it like that of course it sounds silly but isn't that what the Giants are trying to do here? They have a physically gifted kid who needs polishing on the finer points of the position like sight adjustments, running good routes, etc. Those are all of the things that Ballard excelled at. He was proof positive that in today's age of elite measurables an average athlete (comparatively speaking, we're still talking NFL here) who excelled at the fundamentals and did all the little things right could still be a solid NFL contributor.
So yeah, if they can somehow coach up Robinson to where he knows the O front to back, can make sight adjustments, learns to use his body to set up DBs and shield them from the ball, all of those little things that made Ballard a quality NFL starter then yeah, the Giants just might have a heckuva player on their hands.
Bottom line is this: with so much roster turnover, new faces, and talented but unproven young guys, there are bound to be a handful of guys his season who step up and become become more prominent both on the field and in the locker room. It's still just incredibly early and things need to sort themselves out. Hankins, Moore, Kennard, Thurmond, Williams, Robinson, Jennings, Pugh, Richburg...could be any one or a few. But Robinson has just as good a chance as any.
Wouldn't be suprised to see a guy picked up, but game #1 starting coming from another system is totally unrealistic. Especially for a guy who got cut from his last job.
Let me know when I should start writing it...
The two receptions may give him confidence and it COULD be a starting point towards better things.
HOWEVER - He dropped an easy pass for a first down prior to that and had a shot at a ball in the endzone - tough catch there, but the great ones make the play.
IMO - Sometimes you just have to feed them the ball in pre-season and take the good with the bad hoping to generate confidence and improvement. I think some of our guys play nervous because they know that one drop or one fumble sends them to the bench.
The Giants seem to value the average player (Pascoe) that knows his assignments more than the athelete who is raw (Robinson) in allocating reps and playing time.
I would like to see Donnell and Robinson get a lot of targets over the next couple weeks and see what happens.
Did he put on weight by sitting on the bench?
He has good straight ahead speed, and those were the two passes that he caught at the end of the game....poor defense, he just ran straight up the gut and was wide open...
But if he has to make a cut, he loses all that speed....he telegraphs his cuts, tends to round off his route, and has trouble catching balls in traffic....
From two nice catches in the 4th quarter of a preseason game?
I don't consider myself to be negative, but I would think there are significant amount of players that make a couple plays in the 4th quarter of a preseason game that don't even end up making their team, let alone becoming special or busting out.
I hope you're right.
I would have to see 4 mediocre TEs make the roster.
Since the entire offense is still growing into itself he deserves to get some slack.

Hey, as the season progresses he could work his way in more and more and be a threat. I have high hopes that is the case with him.
