Bomar was drafted in 2009, before 2011.

The point is that Eli has never been Reese's QB.

Yes he did. Seven years, three Pro Bowls, and two Super Bowl MVPs ago...not to mention all of the consecutive starts...not to mention coming back from an ankle injury that most thought would keep him on the sidelines this Spring (hint, it didn't).

So why don't you take your act back to Giants.com? I'm sure they miss you over there.

you just have no idea, not even the slightest clue as to what you're talking about. The circumstances behind drafting Bomar and Nassib are entirely different. Just like how you still have zero idea behind the difference between why we dumped Carr over Painter.

zilch, none whatsoever. Talking about football is just so far outside your element it's comical to watch you argue and debate anything.

They're different how exactly?

You just said Eli was never Jerry's QB and basically confirmed that he's been on the lookout for another option since he became GM.

And I'd love to hear why you know that they chose Painter over Carr. Is Curtis a Jerry Reese plant, embedded to help Eli stink, making it easier for Reese to eventually move on from him?

Carr vs Painter had everything to do with $.

Bomar was never drafted to do anythign but be a backup. Nassib was drafted to be traded ala Kolb, Flynn.
My opinion
dep026 : 8/19/2014 5:17 pm : link
lot of slants, WR screens to start. Mix in a deep ball if 1 on 1 occurs to start the season.

Not only is Eli not ready to start the season, but neither is the OL. And right now, unless we find out what ODB has, our WRs may not be good enough to play in this league.

Cruz is probably a top 30 WR, the rest of them can be cut tomorrow and we would probably not miss them. With no emerging TE on the roster, and a 29 year old led RB....

Can we say that we may have the worst skill positions in the NFL? The Jets are probably worse, and the Bills are quite bad. But there arent many teams with worst skill positions than us.
Didn't Painter actually count more against the cap than Carr?
Riggies : 8/19/2014 5:19 pm : link
They were both on minimum deals but there was some sort of exception that took a couple hundred grand off Carr's, IIRC. Worst case, there may have only been a $100,000, give or take, difference between them. The team just thought Painter sucked less than Carr.

And you're flying all over the place on the drafted QBs. First Nassib was taken to replace Eli, then Bomar was a sign that Jerry Reese hated Eli (dating back to 2007), now one was supposed to be trade bait and the other a back-up?

2010. Missed the playoffs that year. The next year he went 9-7 and won his second Super Bowl and Super Bowl MVP.

So, what's your point? You know, besides the one on top of your head.

I'd rather go 9-7 and win a Super Bowl than go 12-4 and not. You wouldn't? Fine, go root for the Patriots with Dumpster.

I guess concern may be warranted but, my God, haven't we learned at this point to trust Eli? This is third juncture in his career that people are saying that Eli can't get it done and, if nothing else, lets give him the benefit of the doubt this year - at least. What about the old adage that "you don't take anything away from preseason football?" With this shitty line he's working with, do you really want Eli stepping into throws and getting hammered? I don't and hopefully he smarter than that...

An old Giant head coach used to say: "Let's see what happens when the real bullets start flying" Amen to that..

Don't we all know that Eli works in four year cycles? Never doubt him after the third year because he'll prove wrong. He did it twice and I'm not betting against him now....

Its preseason guys... Preseason. Give the Man some time. He's earned that.

The Giants are doing a little game planning.
The first team has been embarrassed.
Will they fight and put it together? If not, what does TC do?

My gut tells me Eli and the offense put on a solid performance. I think they rebound and quell at least some of the negativity.

Yes, I am worried Eli may have the "deer in headlights" in him now but if he fires away this game and side-steps the pressure we can rest assured we'll be better than most pundits think. I am praying Eli comes through. No sure thing given what we've seen since the end of 2012 but I have hope.

Now, if Eli sucks yet again you have to wonder if Nassib doesn't start getting first team reps in practice!

Eli is part of a team. He's not falling apart on his own because
Reese's Pieces : 8/19/2014 11:57 pm : link
he's suddenly scared. We've seen him operate under the highest pressure situation imaginable. He just has an impossible job to do: working with John Mara's broken offense.

Why didn't anyone listen to him at his press conference when he said that the offensive line was clearly the top priority this season. Did management make the OL top priority? Did they spend big or use their top draft choice on a top tackle?

The big addition was Schwartz, advertised as a genuine, near-Pro-Bowl, guard. One OL position less to worry about. Too bad that he is turning into the 2014 version of David Baas.

I'm tired of Coughlin's act and I bet a lot of the players are too. When you are winning, you tolerate it, or even joke about it. When you've made the playoffs once in six years, it must get old. Still making them show up for meetings five minutes early.

It was Coughlin's fault, in my opinion, that we lost two fine starters in Nicks and Hill. Coughlin was pissed at Nicks for cutting practice to get a second opinion from a doctor. Nicks was wrong, but practiced Thursday and Friday, made the trip to Dallas, and fully expected to play. Coughlin sat him, out of spite, when the season was still at stake. And I think Coughlin was most responsible for Hill because he is too hold to see marijuana for the mild recreational drug that it is. Would Coughlin have kept LT when he was suspended four games for cocaine and told that the next suspension would be for a whole season?

So it looks like rebuilding, with a new QB, coach, and hopefully GM. These guys didn't come close to making a smooth transition to a younger set of players.

I've been a Giant fan since 1963, and don't tell me that a string of preseason games like this one mean nothing. I've seen the Giants go 6-0 preseason and finish 6-10. I've seen them rollover and play dead in the preseason and play like a powerhouse once the season started.

The truth about the relevance of the pre-season lies somewhere in-between. But Manning's start has met my worst offseason nightmare expectations.

Well, I know my rants aren't too popular, and I apologize for ticking anyone off here, but at my age the thought of four or five or six years of the Giants as bottom-feeders is real hard to take.

The Giants have a worse receiving corps than Carolina?
GiantFanInTX : 8/20/2014 11:57 am : link
Not sure you can say that. I wouldn't say that we have gangbusters out there, but we have a probowl slot/#2 guy, a highly touted (yet unproven) rookie, a big 3rd year receiver in randle and a speedy slot receiver who is inconsistent at best. Then again, we also have a few UDFAs in Harris, Washington and Parker who have shown they can play. I don't think we have the worst receiving corps in the NFL at all. Brady was lights out with his #1 being Reche Caldwell for a good portion of time. I think it's more of an issue with respect to the O line, the QB play and the offensive system adjustment. The receivers can play much better, sure, but to blindly dump it all on "we have the worst receiving corps in the NFL) is short sighted. Things change in the NFL rapidly. QBs can decline and decline quickly. Eli has not played well for 2 straight seasons and he is starting this season off exactly where he left off. Then again, no one really knows yet, he could suddenly turn on like a switch similar to his 2007 playoff run.

Personally, I don't see the Giants letting go of Eli before his contract expires. After winning two super bowls, even if Eli is atrocious again this year, the Giants will be loyal and let him play out, regardless of whether or not it is the correct move. Guys can have off seasons and Eli has had them, but when a guy starts stringing them together, you have to start putting a plan in place and make decisions that are best for the franchise, not for any one player.
I am sure
dep026 : 8/20/2014 1:07 pm : link
there are a few teams I missed, obviously Carolina was one that I miss.

I have to take a wait and see approach with ODB. We dont know what we have with him. But until we play, its Cruz, Randle, JJ, and a bunch of inexperienced players.

I dont have Cruz anywhere near a pro bowl WR anymore. There might be 15 WRs in the the NFC better than him right now, if not more.

Washington - Garcon, Jackson
Cowboys - Bryant
Eagles - no one.
Packers - Cobb and Nelson
Bears - Jeffrey and Marshall
Vikings - Patterson (maybe, I expect him to have a huge year.)
Lions - Calvin
Buccaneers - Jackson
Saints - No one, unless you consider Graham a WR, like he does.
Falcons - White and Jones
Panthers - no one.
Cardinals - Fitzgerald, and Floyd (maybe, another guy who is due for a huge year)
49ers - No one. Crabtree always too hurt.
Seahawks - Harvin (maybe, if he can stay healthy)

So thats 12 guys I have definitely better than Cruz, 13 if you include Graham. Three guys listed as maybes due to injuries or possible break out players.

And that doesnt include even younger guys like Mike Evans, Terrance Williams, Kelvin Benjamin, and Cooks who are either rookies or starters in their 2nd year.

People need to realize that Cruz was not good this year and hasnt shown much in this preseason either.

mikeinbloomfield : 8/20/2014 5:42 pm : link
Cruz' career best 1,500 yards in 2011 beat Jackson's career best of 1,300 yards, Cruz' career best 10 TDs beats Jackson's 9 TDs, and by all accounts Cruz is not a locker room cancer.

Desean gets a lot of press because he's fast. He's not that great a receiver.

Please. The only thing stopping Desean being better than Cruz is that he's not as good as him. Cruz came within 2 yards of 1,000 in an offense ranked nearly last in every category.

And Garçon? He has never topped 1300 yards and 6 TDs. Now you're just picking names out of hats.

Sigh. That's one year. He's never broken 1000 yds in any other year. Cruz came 2 yards from doing it every year in the league.

You're right. Cruz really stepped it up last year when the rest of the offense was struggling and has really stepped up so far this preseason. I heard great QBs make others around them better, but Ive seen great WRs make their QBs look good too. 1 TD in his last 14 games last year. 1.

12 is still not 15 and one you listed isn't even a WR. You can argue 12 is close to 15 all you want, but you said 15, 12 isn't 15, so you were wrong. I don't understand why there is even an argument about this point.
