Last year, coming out of the preseason, I was critical of the roster. I thought the roster screamed of indulgence: three QBs and four TEs and keeping a number of old players who were clearly past their primes (Diehl, Snee, Thomas).
I hope this year the Giants take a different approach. It's time to start making room for some younger, hungrier players. I fully realize that I'm dealing with less knowledge than the coaching staff, but we gave them the benefit of the doubt last year and look what happened.
For instance, this year, with my untrained eye, I would make the following decisions at this point:
Harris/Washington over Jernigan. In three years, Jernigan has done nothing. In three games, Washington has three game winning catches. Harris has been making plays all summer as well. Jernigan has had ample opportunities but still can't put it all together.
McBride over Hosley. Hosley is another player that hasn't put it all together and now faces a suspension. Time to cut ties.
McManus over Brown. They've been toe-to-toe all summer, yet McManus has a stronger leg, more upside, and is less expensive. Time to give the job to a guy who can be our kicker for the forseeable future.
Nassib over Painter. It doesn't make much sense to carry three QBs when you have one of the more durable QBs in the league as your starter. Given that if Eli gets injured, it doesn't really matter who replaces him, it makes more sense to give the roster spot to someone else who plays in a rotational position (like Kuhn). Nassib is again younger and likely has more upside.
Same for TEs. Keep only three. I suspect that's the way the team is headed in any event, but if they carry four again, I think it would be a mistake.
Just my two cents...
1) i don't think its a fight between mcbride and hosely. I think McBride is likely on the team. I would think it is more likely between Hosely, Jackson and James for the last spot. I'm kind of hoping we cut ties with Hosely, find a way to IR Jackson and keep James.
2) TC might agree with you, but I'd like to keep Jernigan along with Harris and Williams. Trindon Holliday has been banged up and failed to followup on his early minicamp success and Manningham is still struggling. Jernigan still seems like a good potential fit for the system, and it would be nice to have the backup slot receiver. I'd like to see us enter the season with Cruz, Randle, Beckham, Jernigan, Harris and Williams.
No way I want four tight ends. It would keep better players at other positions off the roster.
Don't care for Holsey. I'd keep McBride. Not sure about James.

mcbride's play at the end of last season easily lets him make the team this year. Hosley has a tragic history of failure at every turn.
I agree.
Parker has looked that good? Haven't been hearing that much about him.
I note with interest that those were the only decent games he's had as a GIANT since he was drafted in 2011.
JJ has only one position, backing up Cruz in the slot. He could be used as a Wildcat guy, but the GIANTS don't run that. He does have some value running an end around, but again, how often to the GIANTS use a WR to rush the ball?
There is an argument to be made that once again they drafted a guy who doesn't really fit the team and what they run, like Sinorice Moss, Sintim, and Beckum among others before him.
Jernigan really hasn't done squat this summer when given a chance to play as an outside WR. He has repeatedly failed to win the punt return job, He was a mediocre kick off returner at best. And he is worthless otherwise as a special teamer, particularly worthless as a gunner.
Harris seems to be able to do anything JJ can do that the GIANTS are interested in and a lot more, including being a decent gunner, something that this team sorely needs. And he can't be any worse as a WR because except for those three games, JJ was a total waste as a WR.
Parker is a proven NFL receiver, albeit with some fumbling history, who seems to be at least as good as JJ if not better as a return man.
Washington has the God-given talent that JJ will never have - serious height.
I'd think Washington and even Harris are locks. Washington looks too good to cut and when you factor in the need for a bigger WR.... No brainer.

impossible to cut washington!!!!! he's killed it in both practice and game situations. Half the time it's hard enough to get players to show something in either arena. To find one that consistently done both???
un-cut-able.
he's making the team. At this point he's more of a lock to making the final 53 than Eli is.
Randle
Beckham
Washington
Harris
Jernigan
That's fine, especially since guys like Harris being able to plat ST's and JJ can do returns. Also keep an eye on Preston Parker.
I don't think they want to stash away either Harris or Washington, since they will be scooped up. Parker cannot be used for PS, unfortunately. They will probably throw Talley there again.
My only off-season beef is that if the Giants knew Odell's hamstring was an issue and needed healing then why take him in round one when we needed OL help? Imagine Z. Martin and Richburg developing together? We also picked up the UFA's as best as we could. TE is an issue but there wasn't much out there.
Where is this coming from? What hamstring issue before camp? This is just another disgruntled fan who wanted to take a Guard with the 12th pick when the need for a top WR was obviously much greater.
That's all I got to offer.
