There's a lot of reasons for optimism and a lot of talent in the organization, but at some point, you need MLB results. We're tied with the Astros for the most consecutive losing seasons in a row and looking at finishing with little (if any) improvement to the MLB record again this year.
I hope I'm wrong about Niese, but this year's performance, and some of the stats that Dan showed above, have made me re-evaluate what he is. I think he's still a legit rotation guy on a good team, but not a guy you can rely on to be a #3 starter.
He hasn't had a >4 FIP in how many years? Pretty consistently good. How many lefties in all of baseball can say that?
Even with missing all that time on DL and "struggling", he is still top 30 in huge NL/top 60 in MLB for starters in the past five years.
He is still young. He is still LEFTY. He still has a team friendly contract.
Injury risk is the only thing keeping him from being an extremely valuable trade chip. But all pitchers are an injury risk. Commitment to him is only two more years/$16mm. Extremely reasonable since good pitchers are getting $15mm per year as free agents and 2-3 times the years commitment. He doesn't pitch well/ or isn't healthy, you let him leave as a free agent. He does pitch well? You go year to year at friendly numbers with team options.
What do you think we should offer for Miller at this point?

Sure, he hasn't lived up to what many had hoped he would become. Every. Met fan has always waited for that breakout season. But what's wrong with a solid lefty 3?
I think he's over-valued. Is he even a 3? I don't think so, but the fact that he's a lefty, and can break up a 4-RHP rotation, means that he will pitch there.
Niese has absolutely been a 3. Factoring in his injuries, time missed, and 'diss appointing' seasons. Top 30 NL SP the past three years based on WAR. So if each team has a 1 and a 2, he would be the 1st ranked 3. Odd logic, but how many teams would Niese be a 2 on? A handful perhaps. But how many teams would Niese be a teams 4 or 5? Very few. Do the same exercise for the AL, Niese is a top 60 SP.
His FB% is slightly up but not so much that it would affect his BABIP this drastically. LD% is down a lot, so that might have something to do with it.
Mets all over Smard (whatever his name is). Goes to show no matter how good your stuff is, if you can't locate, even a offensively challenged team like the Mets will tattoo you.
