but if what he really wants is a clear path to a roster spot, there are a lot of teams ahead of us. Also, other teams have much better centers to feed him.
Slats has done a nice job acquiring these unsigned college free agents
I seriously doubt that we'd just walk away from him because of the 50 contract limit. Reserve list is linked below, and there are at least a half dozen named I would easily scratch out to resign Moore, who is a playable 3rd pair NHL dman. Link - ( New Window )
Like getting a free #1, though not a top 10 type talent. We are now very deep at top 9 wing in both the NHL and our prospect pool, as compared with D and C (we're set at G after resigning Hank and the last draft). It is time to make a trade. Surely there is a talent starved team that could badly use a Kristo or Fast.
Had speculated that Moore wouldn't be re-signed until Hayes' situation was settled. Moore played well last year so I expect the Rangers to re-sign him unless they really can't fit him under the cap.
which we really lack, but nice job by Sather signing college talent after not having a first rounder the last two years and no first rounder next year.
I wonder if they try Hayes on the Brassard/Zuccarello line. He might compete with Stempniak and Fast for those honors.
In addition to good recruiting, I think that's probably a reflection of the weakness of our system. These college players want a good shot at the NHL ASAP -- you make $850-900k as an NHLer and <$100k as an AHL rookie I think. Massive difference. Agents are probably telling these NCAAers that the Rangers have a poor prospect pool.
from what i understand, had he been in this years draft, he wouldve been a middle-late first rounder. He's big, makes plays, but isnt an overall "physical" player in the sense that you'd expect for someone his size.
He played on a line with kreider in college, but its interesting because reports said that while they got along ok, they werent particularly good friends.
It will be interesting to see what the contract looks like, im sure that with the Avs/others in on him they probably had to offer him a 1 way deal, meaning he'd be a lock for the big squad
The younger of the two Hayes brothers, Kevin has the potential to develop into a solid two-way forward at the pro level. Like his older brother Jimmy, Kevin has a decent frame at 6'2" but plays more of a finesse style. His offensive awareness and playmaking ability allow him to create chances and open up space for his teammates. His skating could use some improvement if he wants to take his game to another level.
Future
His junior season ended abruptly with a thigh injury that necessitated several surgeries, but Hayes is expected to be healthy and ready for his senior season at Boston College. He should be a top forward for the Eagles in all situations. The Blackhawks will surely look to get Hayes under contract following the completion of his college season and likely have him finish out the year in Rockford. Link - ( New Window )
Kevin is a skilled power forward who plays with enthusiasm and drive. He has very good hands and is an excellent play maker. He is a strong skater with a long stride, and uses his long reach and puck protection to beat defenders. He has an excellent wrist shot with a sneaky quick release, and will shoot from any angle. He controls the puck very well in traffic, sees the ice very well, and finds the open man. He has a very good knack of playing the puck in his skates for a big player, often moving the puck from skates to stick without losing speed. Central Scouting on Hayes
thats absolutely right. 28th on HF rankings, their only really highly regarded prospects are Duclair and Buchnevich, both of which are a couple years out from perhaps making an impact (but who really knows).
Im still holding out hope they can get some positive contributions from Lindberg and Fast this year, but wouldnt count on that based off AV's perceived preference to go with established vs youth
late bloomer, like a lot of PF's, but huge senior year and played for Team USA or was invited to. We need all these guy to form a bridge between the guys who've already made the the Rangers and Duclair and Buchnevich...
That profile is a bit dated. He had somewhat of a breakout campaign this year. Was more physical. Some concern that he was a beneficiary of playing with Gaudreau, who was the best offensive player in the NCAA this year. They
Sather is officially fully made up for the 2 lost picks in the MSL trade (assuming of course we dont finish in the bottom 10 of the NHL this year which... of course... only happens if we have mass / clusterfuck of injuries).
Excellent. Glad we're signing these college kids. It's a great and effective way to replenish the picks we've dealt.
It suck that JMoore will probably be gone. I feel like we've weakened a bit defensively this offseason but overall we've not had a bad one when you consider we are coming off a Finals appearance and all of our players would be overvalued and we didn't have a ton of space to work with.
Keith Tkachuk and Tommy Fitzgerald are his elder cousins.
My sister is a BC alum and I attend a few games a season at Kelley Rink and Hayes seemed to toughen up some last year. His physique matured and he seemed more solidly put together which translated to stronger on the puck play. He was always surprisingly nifty with the puck for a big kid and has a deceptively quick snapper. If he can take his game effectively into the tougher areas on the ice the Rangers could have themselves a find here.
This kind of wheeling and dealing is more like a video game. Trade for better players, lose draft picks yet sign the youngest coveted free agent talent for little cash.
Center is a harder position to transition to, so maybe the Rangers see him as a wing, assuming he's good enough to make the roster. He's looked good, but AV trashed him last year.
I also wonder whether Haggerty makes it. These kids make the Glass/Stemp signings look even sillier.

The Stemp signing is low-risk. It's a one year deal for less than a million. I'll take that for a 3rd/4th line veteran, who had 34 points in 73 games. It's a good bargain and I can easily see Stemp putting up more points than he's put up the last few years if he's put on the Zucc/Brassard line.
By contrast, Tanner Glass, who had 13 points in 67 games is going to earn 1.5 million per for the next 3 years. I understand he's a hard-nosed, gritty, work ethic player, but you have plenty of YOUNG guys who can do that at a much cheaper cost...and have way more upside. Awful signing. You shouldn't have to pay a fourth liner 1.5 million...though Sather continues to believe you should and it continues to bite us in the ass.
He played wing throughout college (Arnold was center last year). He has really good size and good skill set but it was almost tough to gauge how much was him and how much was playing on the same line as Johnny hockey who was honestly was best college player I have ever seen in hockey east.
Once again not to say that Hayes can't be a center but it would shock me that he would walk into a situation where he would be set up as one.

Each and every one of those guys was signed for a reason and none of those guys hurt the team's salary structure. It's just a convenient thing to whine about. Glass was likely unnecessary but let's maybe wait to see how he does or how much he plays or how long he stays before we lose our shit over what an atrocious move it was. The organization clearly discussed him as an option and had an idea for what they want him for. So just wait and see maybe?
Yeah, maybe one of the shits Sather throws at the wall will stick
Fine, I'll wait and see if Glass will contribute, but we have little reason to believe that Glass will all of a sudden become a productive, valuable asset.

RE: The Predators' video package for Kevin Hayes was leaked
As is usually the case with the NHL, not a lot of logic in the new numbers...
1. why a 6.5% drop from #1 to #2, then just 2% drops...
2. 0.5% drop from 7th to 8th, then 1% drop to 9th, then whopping 1.5% drop to 10th... huh?.... then just 0.5% to 11th, and finally back to a 1% drop between 13th and unlucky #14. No consistency here at all.
Beginning in 2016, like NBA, lottery will determine top 3 picks. But the 2015 draft is the one everyone currently cares about with at least 2 franchise players.
Good news is maybe just maybe this will keep Buffalo from being a dynasty from 2017-2025.
'Who didn't think he could pull getting Hayes off?'
that your chance of a top 1/3 pick be influenced by whether you had a 1-3 pick in one of the past few seasons. Far too many teams are going into total tank mode and loading up on these high #1s, which are huge in hockey. Pens had the 5, 3 (traded to #1), 2, 1, and 2 picks starting in 2002. Chicago's core is based around getting the 3 and 1 picks. The Oilers are on a run of 1, 1, 1, 7 and 3. Florida has had 3, 3, 23, 2, 1. Colorado has gotten the 1, 2, and 3 picks over 5 drafts.
The league really should do more to prevent long term tanking/aggressive youth movements. It is terrible for the sport.
I don't think a lot of these teams are tanking. They just fucking suck.
Top five picks aren't a sure fire way of getting good - look at the Islanders, Panthers, etc. The Penguins/Blackhawks are actually quite rare - and the Hawks also did a great job drafting in the later rounds.
RE: 'Who didn't think he could pull getting Hayes off?'
Right winger Kevin Hayes has bid adieu to one of the leagues strongest franchise and signed instead with the New York Rangers.
The Blackhawks have been better than us, but we've been one of the best franchises in the league over the past near-decade despite our lack of Cup (Which will be fixed over the next three years). THN - ( New Window )

Nice in theory, but practically impossible to implement i would imagine. Far too many 'special and unique' circumstances, and what not. The bigger issue for me is why true cornerstone players, such as Sydney Crosby, don't get paid more money per year than they do. The individual salary cap should be a lot higher than it is. Would prevent these teams from staying elite for too long (basically, in case this isnt clear - i'm talking primarily about the Penguins because I hate them)

its hilarious to watch the hockey media and fans lose their shit completely because this guy didn't sign there and came to NY instead. THis is clearly the first player to ever not sign with the team that drafted him. Or not. Well this is clearly the first player who left a good team to go to another in free agency. Or not.
And while playing with the best player in NCAA hockey over the last two decades or so doesn't hurt, those who saw Hayes a lot last year for me, it was 15 times live know that wasn't the case. Even before they were put together on Dec. 6, Hayes put up a mere 21 points in 14 games by lugging inferior linemates to success. Thus, with Gaudreau, his points per game went up by just 0.19, a little less than 13 percent. Point being: He was a star no matter who he played with.
This misconception probably comes from Hayes having only posted 67 points in his career prior to this past season, in 102 games. Nearly doubling your career output in a single season usually draws out the doubters, but the numbers suggest he wasn't lucky, and the actual game-watching suggests he wasn't merely a product of Gaudreau. The improvement came because he realized that at 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, he didn't have to try to finesse his way around guys who were as much as three or four years older than him.

Eat a dick, media.
Hockey media has been atrocious of late. Perhaps I've just read more recently given our run, but it's pathetic. Like they don't watch the games or (in this case) don't understand how things work.
Don't know what that's all about, but the dickbag who wrote that the Penguins series was lost at 3-1, then predicted the Rangers would lose to Montreal, then predicted a Kings sweep....yeah, that asshole writes for THN too.

The article mentions that Hayes had some disciplinary problems too...

anything is more funny that going to ESPn and TSN and reading comments from people who are whining about the Rangers "typically overspending" for a college free agent who we are paying under 1 mil per year and who could have gone anywhere.
To stay under the cap, he has to replenish the stock with talent b/c players are going to be lost.
with that being said i like Hayes, big guy with skill. would be a top 5 prospect in the system with a chance to play right away.
Fuck Tanner Glass.

The Blackhawks have been better than us, but we've been one of the best franchises in the league over the past near-decade despite our lack of Cup (Which will be fixed over the next three years).

The league really should do more to prevent long term tanking/aggressive youth movements. It is terrible for the sport.

Right winger Kevin Hayes has bid adieu to one of the leagues strongest franchise and signed instead with the New York Rangers.

its hilarious to watch the hockey media and fans lose their shit completely because this guy didn't sign there and came to NY instead. THis is clearly the first player to ever not sign with the team that drafted him. Or not. Well this is clearly the first player who left a good team to go to another in free agency. Or not.
Eat a dick, media.

Hockey media has been atrocious of late. Perhaps I've just read more recently given our run, but it's pathetic. Like they don't watch the games or (in this case) don't understand how things work.
And the idea perpetuated that we got steamrolled by the Kings - despite pushing 3 games to OT. Wasn't a blowout.

Amen...though I still hate Justin Schultz for spurning us. No one puts Slats in a corner!

Don't know what that's all about, but the dickbag who wrote that the Penguins series was lost at 3-1, then predicted the Rangers would lose to Montreal, then predicted a Kings sweep....yeah, that asshole writes for THN too.

And the fact that the refs anally raped us
